As you can see I got around to making my floating head vehicle icon. I have been using the new Garmin vehicles on my 350, and they just go to show how hard it is to make a vehicle icon that looks good from the back. When in 3d or track up mode you see the vehicle from the back % 90 of the time I estimate. So, I made this head icon that looks best from behind and turned it upside down for the frontal shots instead of making pictures of the back of my head. I only used 9 shots + 1 overhead for the head icon. I didn't care that some pics degraded around the edges with all the flipping and mirroring since I don't expect to see those angles very much. For right angle intersections I put a special pic in for 90 degree turns in 3d mode. If you look closely you will see that I was in the process of shaving off my winter beard on those two pics. I ended up with some awesome mutton chops that I kept for a day.

You combed your hair with a rabid cat?
BTW, the tank looks more like a German Leopard II than an M1A2 Abrams.
Or a Japanese Type 90, maybe... |

Comments are welcome, especially funny ones. The truth of the matter is that I was on my back, tilting my head back to look up at my son taking pictures while walking around me. So my head was upside down and gravity gave me the rabid cat comb job. But I really like the effect when I take a left curve and the image flips the wild hair on the other side.
The tank looks like a box with a small stick poking out %90 of the time.
Next vehicle projects for me will be: Redo my overhead head image to make it look like I'm eating up the road. make a F22 Raptor icon (has a chance of having an interesting view from behind) make a cross-hair icon (want to do something with transparent qualities)

Awesome work, ezran! I made my own vehicle icon for my Scion xB. I used SketchUp for the 3D model, exported 2D images to Photoshop, used the "Contact Sheet II" script under Automate to line all the images up, exported the whole thing as a GIF image, opened the GIF in Paint.NET, and finally exported it as a PNG.

hi everyone, I am new to the forum and just purchased a Nuvi 200. Reading through this thread I found a 3d model of my car, a miata, but I don't have the computer knowledge to make it red (black interior) and into an icon for my Nuvi.
If anyone has the time and interest I would appreciate anything you can do to help there. The Miata model is here: http://dmi.chez-alice.fr/models0.html
In the mean time I'll keep trying on my own...I just don't expect to get very far.

Hello.
One of my pet peeves is that the vehicle icon (triangle) appears to go way over the actual location of you actual position. The centre of the triangle is you actual position on the map. I prefer that the tip of the triangle be the actual location on the map.
So, here is what I did.
- Using one of the original garmin triangle vehicle sets (the blue one), I converted it to a PNG. - Installed Paint.net - Create a new layer and drew lines up and down marking the centre spot on each 2d vehicle. - Jumped to the vehicle layer. - Selected a square around each 2d vehicle and moved it so that tip of the vehicle was now at the position where the centre of the vehicle was - Deleted the layer I added to mark the vehicle centres. - Saved as a PNG - Converted to a SRF
First, forgive me, I am on a course for work right now and can't upload a screenshot. But the 2d arrow vehicle now is repositioned so that the tip of the vehicle is where you actually are on the map. Makes much more sense to me that way.
It is transparent around the vehicle, but there are visual artifacts, such as some of the roads as you get closer change colour, and the printing of some street names get washed out or the middle of the street name font disappears as you get closer.
I have not had time to look at the PNG settings in the Paint.net program, I don't know much about those settings to begin with, but I left them all as default as somebody mentioned in this thread that default settings work.
Any idea's what I can try to fix this up a bit.
Once I get it fixed, I can post my modified file somewhere for others to d/l if they are interested in this change.
Thx
