Guide on the portal : http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=218

UPDATED 03/2011 : Update to discuss everytrail.com that lets you display both GPS tracks, pictures and statistics with a "secret link" to a private track, more details on page 9.
Original post - Here is thread to share the way we geotag pictures with the "workflow", hardware, software, etc... While picture geocoding seems like one of the GPS "killer apps", it is still relatively new. Feel free to comment on the guide on the portal and share your own tips and tricks.

My personal setup/workflow :
1. Globalsat DG-100 Datalogger -> CSV -> GPX with GPSVisualizer
2. WWMX Location Stamper to add lat/long to EXIF
3. Picasa -> Google Earth File
4. Panoramio account

Questions, comments ?

My Geotaging Workflow

GPS Wintec WTC-100

1.- Download track from GPS in GPX (multi-gpx) format with G-Tool Version 2.82
2.- Store track in the same folder as the photos (for future reference)
3.- Apply your timezone offset to the downloaded track (use GPSBabel) (use the GUI version as it is easier than the command line)
4.- Use WWMX Location Stamper to geotag your photos
5.- Use Google Picasa to view your photos in Google Earth or upload them to Flickr that also has the possibility to see the geographic location of the photo.

Thanks for sharing, the WWMX method seems easy enough using the "location stamper" component, although it doesn't seem to be reading my .gpx properly, will work on that.

Can't see a way to get Flickr to read the EXIF data at this point is there a special trick for that ? I think Picasa Web Albums were planning on adding that feature at some point too.

Oh and do you know of a utility to view the lat/long in the EXIF, I'm using Exifer but only show the degree portion apparently, not very accurate ;-)

Most of the image viewer should be able to show gps data stored in the exif tags of your pictures. You can use a program like the free IrfanView viewer (you should install also the plugins).

Another option is to use ExifTool that gives a detailed list of all the exif, ipct and other tags embedded in your pictures.

My GPX files work properly with WWMX Location Stamper, I get them directly from the Wintec GPS with GTool or using GPSBabel, try to use GPSBabel to convert your files in case they are not properly formated.

I read somewhere else the method to make flickr accept geotagget pictures, but cannot remember where. In my case I upload the picture already geotagged and a Map option is shown in the picture page that shows a map with the location of the picture.

Example of a geotagged photo I sent to Flickr.

I tried the WWMX Location Stamper, and saw the location information is in my picture by KUSO exif viewer 2.0. But, the Google Picasa 2.6 do not show the small cross on the picture thumb view, can not link to google earth. any ideal?

I Geotag one of the picture through Picasa and compare with WWMX location Stamper, found The difference

WWMX : GPSVersionID - 2.0.0.0
Picasa : GPSVersionID - 0.0.2.2

I have found a bug report related to your problem (the problem is related to the GPSVersionID byte order), but cannot see where your comes from.

I geotag with WWMX Location Stamper and then the "earth +" is shown in Google Earth.

Yes, got that part working with the Globalsat DG-100 now, thanks, but can't seem to find an option in Flickr to use the embedded location, it takes me to the manual map placement. Let me know if you remember where you saw that method for automatic map placement in flickr.

I noticed panoramio icons in GE and sure enough if you go here http://www.panoramio.com/ you can create an account and geocoded photos will be automatically placed on the map, Google Maps. Here's an example with a picutre I took today. Pretty neat. I wonder how and when the GE synching takes place.

@gpspassion: > I wonder how and when the GE synching takes place.

According to
http://www.panoramio.com/blog/photos-from-panoramio-updated-in-google-earth/
the information for the default layer gets updated in certain (irregular it seems) intervals.

A real time update can be obtained by adding the network layer
http://www.panoramio.com/panoramio.kml
Note that here the images are shown as small thumbs (and not indicated by encircled stars).
Also more images are available.

@awang - odd problem, you might try to reinstall Picasa ?

@Arnd Baecker - yes, I was wondering too, they have some detailed discussions in their forums, apparently the "star" requires a manual update by the webmaster of panoramio

I try another stamper and I am so happy to see the little cross in Picasa and link to GE. This software called g-packer v0.2. But g-packer is in chinese language. The basic operation is the same as WWMX Location Stamper, load track, pointing pictures, one major difference is local time reference.

Hope they come up with an English version at some point ;-)
This site http://www.everytrail.com looks interesting as it adds tracks compared to panoramio, unfortunately no automatic picture placement based on the lat/long, at least for now.

Someone interested in photo geocoding compiled a page that lists PC/Mac software for this. GPX translation software, etc. :
http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~rakerman/geocode-photos.html

As part of the surge of interest in this, I've noticed some donation-ware OSX software he doesn't have listed, e.g.:
http://www.mmisoftware.co.uk/

There are also multiple copies around the web of a press release from Jobo about a specialist camera GPS for direct logging to EXIF fields. One place to see it is:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1171665438.html

From the photo it fits in the camera flash shoe and the connector looks like miniUSB. Nothing said about the source, but maybe those here can track down some specs?

Has anyone here tried Quakemap http://www.earthquakemap.com/ I have been using this sofware for several years. It was writen to display earthquakes on a map but has evolved into a powerful tool. It will import tracks, add pictures to the map by location using the time tag on the picture file, (the time in the camera needs to be accurate). It links to Google Earth. I searched the forums and found no reference to this FREE Software. Check it out
