I saw the one on bike and walking but thought I would be too far off topic. I was just wondering what it does when you are in the middle of a lake. does it show your current possition? I am new to GPS so my questions may seem simple. from your links I take it that it will not keep your possition in the center of the map. without buying additional stuf. |

Yes it does show your current position on the water. Unlike most of the more expensive automotive GPS units, the Mio C310x can be used on the water. I've got mine set up with all the channel markers, shoals, restaurants and marinas on our lake marked as POIs. You can go one better and treat your shoals and markers as "speed cameras" so you get an alert when you approach them. That makes navigating the lake at night a dream!
I'm building a site that's going to include information on how to use the Mio on inland lakes, and you can find that at http://www.hugginsnet.com/ilovemymio . The sites still undergoing changes as I add sections to it, but go there and bookmark it if it interests you.
You don't get a real charting capability out of the Mio, meaning your're not going to get elevation gradients like you would on a real marine chart plotter, but if you just want something to mark you favorite fishing spots, mark navigational aids, and to record tracks to your favorite lake locations, you can't beat this little gem for that purpose. I returned my Magellan RM3000 recently as it didn't even give water a different color! It was totally useless on teh water.
Anyway, hope this helps out. The reason I bought my Mio after visiting these forums is because I could use it on the lake. |

Oh, and as to your position on the map, the Mio always keeps you centered unless you fudge with the programming. As long as your lake shows up on the maps that are preloaded you should be fine. The lake I live on is quite large (33,000 acres, 521 miles of shoreline) so it is a large part of the local geography, and is included in the Mio base maps.
And for modifying the Mio to work on the lake, you don't need to buy anything, you can go to my site and find out what software you need and can download that for free. |

| I can tell you that I have spoken to Mitek Mio and they say the do not have Marine Maps for the C310x, and they didn't state it specifically but I got the feel that they weren't interested in developing that feature. However, I'm trying to put together some modifications that might allow it to use something similar. So far, no good, but if I do have a breakthrough I will most definitely post it here in the forums. |

| Again, you can't count on the iGo/MioMap software for that, but the way to make this work is with OziExplorer, it will give you the full "off-road" experience, waypoints, routes, tracks, etc...see the links above. |

I've had OZI ExplorerCE up and running now over the past week. Was a pain to find maps and import them into the Mio. I never knew it was so involved, the entire OZI Explorer setup is beyond daunting, I though I was pretty good at this stuff untill I had to import Topo maps.
One thing though, once I got everything figured out it was quick and easy; almost painless if the data transfer rate wasn't so painfully slow, need SD card reader.
The topo maps work great (water included) and I find the Mio to be more than accurate enough on 1:24k scale. I was taught by the military to navigate off 1:50k scale map and the 1:24k map are just incredible when it comes to details. I'll get around to writing a guide if enough need is required. |

I am told that " Tracky" another off-road GPS Nav program will work on CE4.2 as per an email form them --- Check it out at trackthisout.com --
I have this program as well as several other "geocaching" programs I 've purchased in an elusive attempt to find the BEST -- most I've been told will not work with CE 4.2 (ex. Fugawi, BeeLine GPS, Pathaway)
If anyone has anything other than OziCE working ---pleasse post. Thanks |

bobfried,
I am trying to put together a Tokyo map solution for a friend who travels there often. I got him to buy a MIO C310x, because he really likes all the things that we have done with it.
I am just learning about OZI and would appreciate any step-by-step that you might want to put together. Did you end up with a usable map of the Tokyo area?
Feel free to email me so we can better communicate. Thanks, Gary |

| There are tokyo navigation maps for Mapking, but Mapking is not completely working on my c310x, apparently it needs some different dlls. So I found another software called Handymap that'll read the tokyo map. I'm in the middle of downloading and trying it out. I'm hoping it'll work better. Plus it has South african maps. |

I to have been desperatly searching for a cacheing program that will work. I have cachemate on my old palm but would love to have beeline on the Mio. I have not been able to ge any cache specific software to work on the Mio at all. quite frustrating! if anyone figures it out post up!
I have oziexplorer on my mio but haven't used it yet much. I found maps from here they come in the SID format so you need the SID plugin for oziexplorer on you pc to read the map and then convert it using the img2oz program.
for semi rural/sub/urban cacheing the mio itself works fine with these instructions from aonther thread
Space has some neat instructions " You can also add the following line to the SYS.TXT file in the \My Flash Disk\Miomap\Miomap folder:
[debug] show_gps_pos=1
(you should already have a [debug] section, so just add the show_gps_pos=1 line under that section).
This will show a little blue dot where the actual GPS position is when you have "Keep position on road" turned on. |

I have had no luck with Tracky on my C310SX regardless where on the file structure the files are put. Always get the "missing files, etc" error. I've sent them an email so time will tell.... |
