Kris,
I responded to a previous post with a how-to guide (no photos) before seeing your post. I noticed that you did not use the small circuit board (across the battery terminals) from the original battery. Do you know if that will make any difference?
Batteryjunction.com offers two compatible batteries, one with a circuit board and one without. I decided to use the circuit board from the original battery and order the one without the board, just in case:
LG Lithium-Ion 18650 3.7V LG18650-2200 1 6.40 Tab = Yes (+.25) 2200 mAh Rechargeable Battery ICR18650 S2
Though this battery may be the correct one and work just fine:
Li-Ion 18650 3.7V 2200 mAh rechargeable battery FULLY PROTECTED with PCB Item#: 186502200PCBx0001 $6.19 (+.25 for tabs)
My C320 is working fine again as well.
Jim

Jim,
sorry for responding late - I was out of the country. If I had a choice I would select the battery with a current limiting device (small circuit board). This may be not important for normal operation but it is a safety feature in case of short circuit. So if you went with battery with a protection circuit you are OK. |

Is anyone willing to crack open their C3x0 and let me know how the built in antenna is supposed to be positioned? I have my replacement batteries on their way in the mail but when I tried to use my GPS after reassembling (I was checking to see if I had the battery protection circuit), I am now unable to find any satellites. Does the shiny side or the dull side go up? BTW... A picture is worth a 100 words. Thanks in advance! |

Thanks for your response Kris2005. Sorry to hear about the short lived battery. Guess it's a good thing I ordered 2. I'm in a holding pattern today also as I'm waiting for my batteries to arrive. Because I have the 330, I need the one with the pcb, so I got it from batteryjunction.com. Now I just hope it fits. I hope you can take some pics of your dissection tonight! |

I cannot answer this question. But I would imagine that the C550 has similar battery. I would advise open the unit and have a close look. |

Thanks... I saw that you append/posted the pictures of the internal antenna placement.
Well I got my batteries in and the good news is that after following your awesome instructions, my C330 is now holding a charge! The bad news is that it is still having problems locating satellites. For some reason, after I disassembled/reassembled the unit, it has difficulty locating satellites. If I place the unit on my dash (I usually use a cup holder mount that I made), I can find satellites. But I loose them when I put the unit back in the cup holder mount. Since you have been on these forums for a while now, I was wondering if you know of any problems with the internal antennas ever needing replacing. I really don't want to have to use an external antenna (or buy another GPS)... Thanks. |

sorry for responding late though I have been an a wek long business trip. I replaced my second battery last wekend and so far so good. The battery does keep the charge and the unit have no problems with locating sattelites. I do not know why your unit has this problem. I would advise check the placement of ther antenna. Next do soft and hard reset. Sorry cannot be of more help. |

Kris2005,
Thanks for your response and suggestions. What the problem turned out to be is that the soldering on one of the wires connecting to the internal antenna PCB card had gone bad. I verified this by checking for continuity with an ohm meter. The wires used are a coaxial type and are REAL small, making them difficult to work with; it was a pain re-stripping and soldering. Once completed, I was again able to get my C330 to find satellites from my cup holder mount.
So if anything, all future DIYer's should take extra caution when opening their units so as not to break any solder joints/spots. |

Glad you solved the problem!
I agree with you regarding taking care of wires/joints. They can be tricky so care has to be excercised! |

Thanks, Kris2005.
Your info and photos have been a big help. I just ordered batteries to do the replacement on my c320, too.
Now, does anybody know where I can find a replacement faceplate ring for a c320?? Mine went in the trash while the unit was disassembled, thanks to an over-eager housekeeper.

Jim1950,
You can always get those from the Garmin website itself, but they have to be purchased in a 5-pack:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=164&pID=6384
Look at the "Accessories" tab for items still available for your unit. If you are looking for a slightly better price, you can find some places that have them available on pricegrabber.com:
http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__Garmin_FACEPLATE_STP_C320_C330_5_PACK,__8129747
Depending on where you live, you might save on sales tax and shipping. Hope that helps... |
