I installed v8NT update on my Nuvi 350. After getting the message "update successful" or similar, I disconnected the Nuvi and it powered up. While the screen read "loading maps", I got an error message "can't unlock maps". I tried a repair reinstall, but the program indicated that v8 had been successfully unlocked and that no update was necessary. Version 8 maps were correctly installed on the computer for use with MapSource. (Version 7 is still there as an option). Any ideas how to get the Nuvi to load the new maps? Right now, it appears to load the base maps only. No detail maps. |

Shows Map Detail/ Map View/ Map Outlines/ Vehicle.v8 should be the only option and is loaded, but not at high detail. I am sure that it is version 8 because the maps of my area are different from before. |

Found the cause. This update sw has a bug and if you have another unlock code on your PC, it will use that unlock code instead of the correct one.
Soution:
1. Use Mapsource to find the unlock code for NT v8 (from Utilities->Unlock Maps...). 2. Using Notepad, edit gmapprom.unl file on the unit (under Garmin folder) to replace invalid code with the correct 25 character unlock code (no spaces or dashes) and hit Enter key and save. 3. Reboot.

Use Notepad to edit.
Make sure there is no space or dash between unlock codes, and hit "Enter" key right after last character of unlock code. |

Word is a bad choice for editing this kind of file. Unless you are very careful to avoid saving as a doc file or otherwise introducing all the header garbage Word strews around in its wake (yes, on both platforms [sigh]), it can really corrupt your work.
Use Notepad or another plain text editor and be very careful about line endings and such.

So i am curious now. Would it better to delete the the already installed unlocked code from the pc (e.g. in my case i have the v7 currently installed on the PC) before i unlock/install the update of v8 using the same PC onto the GPS unit and the PC? The way to delete is : open mapsource click Utilities-->Unlock Maps The window pops up with the "welcome to...." click next and there u get multiple options of which one is: "If you have previously unlocked Garmin map products... check box option 3: View my installed unlock codes" check that box and click next click once on the "City Nav North America NT v7" in that window and once you click that (in my case this is the only code installed so only choice) the 2 buttons at the bottom of that window "Delete" and "Properties" become active (i.e. clickable) and then u can hit the "Delete" button to delete it
That way when u install the update of v8 on the GPS and the PC, there wont be any codes on the PC Please comment whether anyone thinks this is a viable option or a death-dive Thanx -Ankit

My =guesss= is that as long as you retain the unlock code for v7, you are not risking anything by deleting it from your PC, but I am guessing as I haven't tried it.
I'm going to sticky this as I'll bet as the DVDs start arriving in mailboxes there will be more folks in need of this info.

After tiring of all this editing mess, I went upstairs to a computer which has never had MapSource installed on it and connected the Nuvi to a USB port to access the Nuvi drive.I then deleted the "gmapprom.unl" file completely. Next, I installed MapSource N.A. v8 NT to the computer and retreived the new unlock code from My Garmin. After installing to the PC, I ran setup to update the Nuvi.Setup started, then gave me a message that no update was necessary (the new mapset was installed last night, I just couldn't unlock it).I clicked O.K,exited setup, verified that a copy of the "gmapprom.unl" file had been placed on the Nuvi, unplugged and rebooted the Nuvi. The unit started up and loaded the maps.End of problem (?). Thanks to all for the help and for pointing me in the right direction.

If you open that gmapprom.unl with hex editor, it contains unlock code and extra 2 special characters. To be specific, in gmapprom.unl, there is a single line of 27 characters. First 25 characters are unlock code (without dashes). There are another 2 special characters right after unlock code: hex 0D and hex 0A (i.e. CarriageReturn and LineFeed).
So, if you edit the file with Notepad, and enter 25 character unlock code and hit Enter key before saving it, it should work.

I have a different problem altogether. I went in and fille din the credit card form for purchasing the unlock code for $75.00 and it gave me the following error :- We are sorry, but we are unable to process your request:
You have selected an item that is not currently available to purchase. Please go back and select another item. If you are unable to find an alternate part, please e-mail our sales department at <A HREF='mailto:websales@garmin.com'>websales@garmin.com</A> or call 1-800-800-1020 to inquire about items that might be substituted. An order must have at least one item. Please go back and correct the error and try again.
I tried going via the web and get the same error. Anyone else seen this?
Thanks, Joe |

Joe,
That's the same problem I had. I could not get past the same point in the unlock process that you are describing. I had to call Garmin Tech Support and they fixed my problem internally on their server. Read this thread for more info: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=67116&whichpage=3 |
