FYI my Navteq RDS Story:
I noticed on Magellan and Navteq's website that Toronto has traffic coverage through Navteq RDS. I called Magellan to confirm this with tech support who said "YES" toronto has traffic support. I escalated to a second level tech who also confirmed that Toronto had support.
So I went and purchased a Magellan Roadmate 6000T. Even though it locks to 104.5 FM and shows active traffic service from Navteq, it gets NO messages/events regarding traffic.
I spent the good part of 2-hours on the phone with Magellan who took me through a bunch of useless troubleshooting steps.
I plan on sending a nasty email to Navteq and Magellan for false advertising and recommend that everyone stay away from their products... |

Good News straight from Garmin:
"The updates to receive traffic information in Canada should be available is about three weeks."
I hope this is true...

Does that mean a firmware update? Or do we need the new 2008 maps.. which, coincidentally, should to be released in 3 weeks or so. |

if it is a new map then it will have to be for free!. and I am going to enjoy the discussion with them over the phone lol lol lol lol. How i wish i new english better! cause i bought an 800 cad C550 a year ago that i am yet to use for traffic here in canada. but i suspect it is a new map the solution. i remember i asked the online authorized dealer gpsmart.ca who sold me the unit about it based on what they were saying in their website. and i quote:
Dec 19, 2005 - "There have been a couple of developments. There is now a schedule for adding the "TMC Location Codes" for Canada into the Map Database. We are expecting those maps to be available at the end of 2006, making it possible to add service. We are currently investigating the feasibility of adding coverage and data. Would service in Montreal and Toronto be enough to sell Navigation devices in Canada, or is Vancouver required too?"
So i suspected that the NA NT v8 that the unit came with (released in april 2006) did not had the LTN codes in it. besides will it take that long for garmin to release a GTM or even a unit firmware update? I dont think so!.
Does anyone knows of someone receiving TTN traffic info here in Canada even with a non-Garmin unit?? Is Someone with a new Garmin unit with the new 2008 NT version(NT is the only version with the location codes for traffic) of the maps receiving the traffic info?
In the mean time stay away from the 401 when possible, lol lol lol.

| I was under the impression its a firmware update...if it's map updates, then I agree - they should be for free! I bought my C550 a year ago as well, for the main purpose of traffic service... |

| Yes, if new maps are needed I'll demand a free upgrade since that's why I bought the Nuvi 370. |

| yes!, it is going to be a firmware update. I just called Garmin last night and the CSR confirmed it. He said that the next C500 firmware update might come with a GTM update as well. I guess I will use webupdater once a week for the time being. How soon IDK. |

| Traffinfo, and others, I just want to say thanks for keeping everyone up-to-date (and keeping this thread alive). I myself have no PND or software capable of traffic, but I'm very much keeping an eye on the new developments. I'm sure Canada is just around the corner (hopefully the corner is not too far ;-) |

| you are very welcome and hopefully around the corner is tomorrow!. i guess the last GTM update (the second one in the last days) fixed the issue succesfully. I will post my review of the service tomorrow if it works of course. if not a call to garmin will be placed. to bad if the service will only be provided on weekdays cause i work so close to home that traffic on rush hour is not an issue for me. |

| I came here after traffinfo asked me to read this thread. I am in Ottawa tonight and will travel to Montreal tomorrow. I have the GTM-12 with Nuvi-370. I will try various positions of the GTM-12 antenna cable inside the car tomorrow during the drive and see if it works. I have the latest f/w loaded that says that it supports Canada. I am within my 3 month free clearchannel subscription. It works in my home are (San Francisco bay area), only that I have often found the data out of date, just like the crappy data I used to get from traffic.com that was broadcast over cellular data service on my PDA phone when I used Garmin Mobile 10x bluetooth GPSr. From my experience in the bay area, I wouldn't recommend the FM traffic service. It is of academic interest to me now. |
Thanks & regards, Saibal ------------------------ Own Nuvi-370, GPSMAP 60csx Sold my iQue-3600, Mobile 10, Globalsat BT-338 |

| ssaibal: dont worry about rerouting your cable or anything else cause that is not the issue here in canada. i just called garmin yesterday around 6 pm and they promised they will call me back probably today with an answer cause they did not know it was not working properly yet here in toronto. even the last update version 4.40 (that came 2 days later) as i recall claims it fixes the issue in canada but i does not, therefore i called them to let them know. my c550 keeps scanning several chanels but still does not lock to anyone in particular as is suppose to do. and my TTN US subscription will expire in 10 days , because my unit activated automatically when I went to windsor, ON. See my report about that , i beleive under a n/a name or something like that. So my GTM works ok , and i have the same routing of the cable and everything else , the only difference , I am in toronto now not windsor. Will post again when Garmin calls me to give me an answer. This reminds me my hometown in havana , cuba when several times after a blackout no one had called the hydro company because everyone thought that the neighborg had already called, lol lol lol. |
