Yes that would help, can you send it to gpspassion[@]gmail.com ? In the meantime I will add the link to your google spreadsheed in the first message. I haven't used Google spreadsheets much, but do you have a way of auhtorizing people to modify that spreadsheet with some validation by you at some point ? I'm seeing question marks that could be fixes and links added, like the DG-100 review. Actually I would have just one spreadsheet and add a column for BT. |

@obarnes, thanks for the useful spreadsheet! It will be even more helpful if it includes two more pieces of data: whether the loggers record in 2D or 3D, and the recording interval. Many people require elevation in the tracklog.
The Wintec models only record in 2D.
The NaviGPS records in 3D.
The Wonde Proud BT-CD110 currently only records in 2D, but the product manager is checking with his technical people for me to see if that can be modified. I'll let you know.
The Sanav GL-50-BT records in 3D and has adjustable recording intervals. From the product literature: # Output protocol: NMEA 0183 # Default output sentences: GGA, RMC # Adjustable output sentences: GLL, GSA, GSV, VTG and ZDA # Default Logger Interval: RMC (60 sec. log when GPS is fixed ), Others (00 sec.)
BTW, the Sanav is now available at mobilegpsonline.com for $192 Cdn.

I've contacted Sanav, and GL-50-BT can be bought directly from them for 120 USD (EXW price).
@gpspassion, can't wait for the test!!! :) |

I came across the ZyCast SG-289 today. Anyone know of a US retailer for it (Semsons and BuyGpsNow don't carry it)? I really like the use of SD memory for the data logging. It makes the data transfer extremely simple and allows for ridiculously huge amounts of data storage capacity. If it only had solar...

A GPS logger that records the NMEA output on a SD-card is just what I am looking for. But I don't think I like the recording options of the ZyCast SG-289. According to the user manual which can be downloaded from the review on pocketgpsworl.com they are: In TIME-mode: intervals of 5 to 55 seconds in steps of 5 seconds
In AUTO-mode:
Speed Record
0 Km/h No record
Under 10 Km/h Record once per 2 seconds
Under 40 Km/h Record once per 5 seconds
Under 70 Km/h Record once per 8 seconds
Under 100 Km/h Record once per 10 seconds
Over 100 Km/h Record once per 20 seconds
With a SD card as memory I would expect to be able to record every second. The AUTO mode would result in a record every 3 meters when walking at 5 km/h and every 560 meters when driving at 101 km/h.
And for a device as expansive as this I would like to have a manufacturers or sellers website offering support and downloads. I'm not sure if the manufacturer's website is only down for the moment of if it isn't maitained at all. When I look at http://zycast.com.tw or the Google cache entry for www.zycast.com.tw I see: "Last updated October 27, 2005"
Edit 07/05/2007 - www.zycast.com.tw seems to be up again. But just the same content as http://zycast.com.tw: no info on the SG-289, no support, no downloads and still showing "Last updated October 27, 2005" |

| I get just a bit over 24 hours of use from my BT-335 but the spreadsheet shows only 15 hours. US Globalsat's spec sheet lists 25 hours of continuous use. |

I wonder if there is an update to this thread? I hope there are new products in the last year and a half - but to be honest I have not found much on my own. I have been looking high and low for something as close to the following as possible for work: GPS Data Logger Must Have - 50 + Channels - 5mz update rate (or better (c:) - Bluetooth that does not turn off when no bluetooth single present. - At the very least 200,000 data points collected - Good battery life - durable Really really should have - At the very least 500,000 data points collected - Great battery life Would be nice if it had - Internal antenna with a jack for an external - Next to unlimited data points collected using a memory card - Excellent battery life
Thanks! |

I just wanted to comment on the zyCast SG-289, which I own.
It is a nice logger, but has a couple of annoying features, that will soon make me look for a new one.
I use it mainly as a logger for photo geotagging, and occasionally for navigation when linked with a cell phone.
1. Sometime it will record a log, and sometimes it won't!!!! I have had a couple of trips where at the end of the trip I discover that nothing was logged. I am not sure when or why this happens. It also seems that just checking if points were logged causes the logging to turn off sometimes. I'm not really sure. My current best guess is that you can only log once a day, so if logging stops for whatever reason on a day, it will not restart till the next day. I think this is because the log is one file a day. So, turning the device off to conserve battery power can cause problems...
2. The buttons are extremely sensitive. It is really really hard to put the device somewhere (while hiking) so that buttons will not be pressed. (This will usually cause BT to turn on, or back light, but sometimes other changes.) No problem for putting it on the dash, just a problem in any pocket. My current solution is to remove the buttons...
3. You can't set it to turn on with back light off. Just a small annoyance - you have to turn the light off every time you turn the device on.
4. You can't turn off the speed alarm, or set it above 120 km/h (or 120 mp/h when not using metric). This is mainly a problem on a plane, as it will continually blink.
5. The battery alarm is blinking the backlight. This wastes battery even more. Again, just a minor annoyance.
Most of these are easy to solve in software, but I can find no firmware update anywhere. |
