EDIT BY GPSPASSION 20070926
With the online track sharing possibilities and picture geocoding options, gps logging has been generating quite a bit of interest, you can see what forum members have to say about the various models below and here is a link to a google spreadsheet prepared by obarnes with specs (Bluetooth or not) and links : >> Google Spreadsheet <<
Hello all. I have recently been in the market for a GPS device that has logging capabilities (and that can be deployed without ones knowledge). I have come across the Delorme "Blue Logger" that looks like it will do the trick for me. I do have one question though that not even Delorme can answer; does anyone know if the data can be used with Google Earth? I know there are other GPS manufactures that output to a .kml file that Google earth uses but these devices are not Bluetooth capable. Anyone have any ideas? ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. Thanks! |

Thanks for the info. Honestly I am NOT a fan of Delorme's products but in this case the Bluelogger has some good features that are imperative to my project. I stumbled across this website that will convert the output files of the Bluelogger to a .kml file. Very neat!

Thanks for the summary, actually the rbt 1100 seems to be Xtrac v2, not SiRFstarIII, each time I see RBT at a tradeshow I bug them with questions about a SiRFstarIII datalogger, they opine, but no luck so far ;-)
I don't think the Transystem i-Blue747 and 737L use the new NJ2020 chipset based on the sensitivity ratings, we shall see.
@userid187 - hadn't realized gpsvisualizer supported the BlueLogger, I'm curious, what features in particular do you need for your poject that only the BlueLogger has ?

Me neither, and I created GPS Visualizer.
"187," what format does the BlueLogger output? I'm guessing it's some sort of sensible CSV text?

Hey Adam, It will output to the following formats: Draw Text GPL Raw Openspace Transfer XDatabase
I simply output to text and let your converter do the rest. |

Thanks for "refreshing" that thread, in the meantime I received a test unit of the Amaryllo Trip Tracker with Bluetooth - http://www.amaryllo.com/almooj/content/view/34/31/lang,en/

Haven't had much time to use it but it reminds me a lot of the TFAC Pixie portable GPS (news item but it lacked Bluetooth. It got a lock ok but having been spoilt by the power of SiRFstarIII over the past 18 months, it's a bit hard to go back and deal with fixes with 3/4/5 satellites and getting worried you're going to lose it.
They mentioned that NaviGPS is no longer in business and that locosys tech is their hardware partner and that Amaryllo develop the the software/firmware.

Here is another BT or USB logger that uses SiRF III, the GL-50-S & GL-50-BT from San Jose Navigation. Interested to see a review on this forum soon. http://www.sanav.com/gps_loggers/gl-50BT.htm

The specific features I like in the Blue Logger is its ability to log 50k points before it begins to overwrite the data or stop logging. Its software allows you to set the parameters at which the device will begin logging and at what frequency.
I have been playing around with the settings and have to say that it is very unpredictable. For example I set it to log once every mile when traveling above 55 MPH and once every 0.0155 mile (1/64 mile or every 82.5 Feet) when traveling under 25 MPH. Anything between those figures and it should log once every 0.031 (1/32 mile or every 165 Feet)
So far the unit has failed to shift its logging to once every one mile when traveling above 55 MPH. The whole idea was to log less frequently at higher speeds to conserve memory and log more frequently at slower speeds to yield a more accurate track.
Anyways, its not really performing as I had expected although it is working. Oh yeah, and for $145 I should not really complain....but I will anyways.

| I have owned a Delorme Bluelogger for several years. At first it was pretty good to work with but over time it has become rather random in its ability to function correctly. I have reset it several times, changed the parameters, uploaded them to the unit, and in the end it did not function properly. Another time it worked fine, so I have become frustrated with it and am looking for something else that has both bluetooth and usb capabilities. |

Fyi, the chipset used in the GT-11 and BGT-11 (NAVi GPS / Amaryllo Trip Tracker) is SiRF SII low power per Jenme at Locosys.

You're sure it's IIx ? That would only be the second unit that uses it after the BT-328, that part sounds scary "It doesn’t like fog. Any thick fog caused it to lose it’s signal. I haven’t tried enough GPS’s to know if this is a common problem. The boat’s GPS did not lose its signal. ", weather not having an impact on the fix normally ;-)
Didn't have any problems like that with the "Amaryllo Trip Tracker" on the other hand I found the UI pretty difficult to deal with and must admit I didn't spend as much time with it as I originally intended. |
