I switched to Terrain Map view because it seems to be the best to illustrate which parts of Europe now do have at least some coverage, and which parts are not covered at all. The grey areas are with no road coverage.
The newly added countries in MP 06 EU do have street level coverage of only a handful of the largest cities plus the main highways for the whole country.
Countries previously covered should have some improvements in the coverage now. For example I remember the previous version of MapPoint 2004 (and even the more recent AutoRoute 2006) included only the small southern portion of Finland. Now the country is covered all the way to the very top. I see street level coverage of even small towns on the northern border.
It's interesting, but it is no longer possible to find out about the coverage of MS MapPoint (the CD-product) by checking the coverage of the on-line service http://local.live.com/ because Windows Live Local, in addition to using map data by Navteq Corporation, uses also map data by AND Automotive Navigation Data. Thanks to map data by AND, the online service now includes street level coverage of many more countries than the CD product. The countries for which MP 2006 includes just coverage of major cities, the on-line service includes what appears to be 100% coverage.

Hi, I have virtually no knowledge about programs such as this, so please forgive me asking this beginners question. I would like to know if this program can export routes to files that can be imported into GPS equipment of major manufacturers of these devices such as Garmin, MAgellan, TomTom etc. Thanks for the attention, Willy

Looks good! From what I understand, it is possible to make a route in Mapsource, save it, convert it to TomTom and upload it to a TT device. Cool Now I have to find a way to get routes into a Nüvi, I really like the new 660, but I think it won't be possible to feed it with routes, not if Garmin has its way. Perhaps there are utilities for this as well? Thanks for the hint, Willy

Got my copy -- the map data now seems to be accurate to about June 2005, which is about a year newer than AR 2006 (which was to June 2004); therefore I'd wager that AR 2006 will be based on the same map data as MP once it comes out.
It's good to see Eastern Europe finally included, however I'm disappointed that places like Greece, which had good coverage of Athens in AR 2006, hasn't really expanded much in this new version. |
