Left on a smartphone, right on an iPaq 6515

And here is the program
>> DOWNLOAD VERSION 0.8 <<

Tested on WM2003SE/WM5.0
- View satellite activity
- Activate SBAS (WAAS/EGNOS)
- Send SiRF reset commands (Factory, Cold, Warm, Hot)
- Create NMEA log files
- Show GPS info like firmware version after reset commands are sent
- Turn on and off static navigation
- Postion marked on globe
- Standard deviation of position for last three minutes

Description
Sewe reads and interprets NMEA sentences sent from the GPS.
This is only an ARM version. The WM device probably also needs to be application unlocked.

Installation
Copy the two files in the zip file to the same directory somewhere on your device. Start the executable file by using a file browser.

Setup
You need to first setup the connection to the GPS. Bluetooth must be enabled on your device to start with and the GPS need to be paired and assigned a serial port. Instructions for that can be found elsewhere in this forum. Note the serial port number assigned to the GPS.

Select the assigned serial port in Sewe either using left and right keys on the main screen. The serial port selected is shown in the red status text. Press enter to connect to the GPS. After a moment Sewe will start interpreting the NMEA sentences.

Another way to select serial port is to go to Menu/Settings where you can select port number and baud rate. Press return to go back to main screen and return again to connect.

Main screen features
Status message
The status message shows if Sewe is connected to the GPS. It also briefly shows the status after changes or commands are sent to the GPS. The text is red if not connected. When logging (L) is appended to the message.

Top left
Top left of the main screen contains navigation and GPS information:
latitude
longitude
ALT: altitude
DOP: dilution of position (number of satellites used for fix)
Q: fix quality (0 = invalid, 1 = GPS, 2 = DGPS (SBAS)) DT: time since last DGPS fix
DS: PRN of SBAS satellite (Garmin PRN of SBAS satellite)
T: latest time to last fix

Top right, 3D earth function
The top right shows a 3D rendering of the earth and satellites. Commands to move around the 3D view are:
5: zoom in
0: zoom out
1: increase earth rotation
2: decrease earth rotation
6: tilt upwards
9: tilt downwards
7: rotate left around your position
8: rotate right around your position
3: restore view to default

Bottom of main screen
The bottom of the screen shows a plot of the positions acquired over the last three minutes. Additional information is shown in the plot area:
h: the height in metres of the plot area (change with key up and down)
d: current standard deviation of plot points, only useful when GPS has been stationary for three minutes.
t: the latest time to last fix. The time from when the fix is lost (for example after sending a reset command) until it is acquired again.

The GPS Info page is empty until you send a command to the GPS. I didn't want to send commands automatically as I have not found any commands that does not change settings in the GPS. Try to send a reset or SBAS command before you open the info page or when the info page is open. This is only tested to work with Globalsat BT-338.

Thanks for sharing, this certainly fills a gap on the Smartphone platform as there were no utilities around as far as I know, too bad I just returned my Samsung i320 test unit, I'll check to see if it works on my old Qtek 8080. Think you could add a NMEA logger maybe ?

Feel free to upload to the server http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14251 if it helps with bandwidth.

I had a boring day to begin with... so here is an update. New is a graphical display of satellite positions with signal strenght as the size of the colored middle, green satellites are used for positioning. There is also a position trace from the last three minutes in the bottom frame. The scale of the trace can be changed with key up and down, it is in meters corresponding to the height of the frame. The red dot is the average position. The screen looks like this:

And here is the .exe

Any comments?
/Martin

And thanks Gpspassion for the server space!

Great, by the way tried it on my old 8080 with WM2003SE and it works a charm, will try the new version now. No problem for the server space, you'll have to add the version number to any upcoming versions as you can't "crush" what's on the server.

Hi Martin. I can't wait to get home to try this application, even though I have an Audiovox SMT-5600 (WM2003SE). Can this software be used to send commands to the GPS unit? I mean commands like factory start, cold start, warm start etc.?

Regards,
Rob

Installed on the SMT-5600 and it works just fine. Doesn't look so bad in my opinion

Why would it look bad ? ;-) No SiRF reset commands so far, but that's a good suggestion, if I can pick 2 : Factory Reset and Warm Reset.

Good idea Rob! I added your suggestion and fixed som small things like screen flicker and an averaging bug. It still has a bug where satellite position messages sometimes are missed and the position circle shows too few satellites. It now supports the following system messages for SiRF.

Enable W/E
Disable W/E
Cold start
Warm start
Hot start
Factory reset

I haven't really tested the restart commands but a factory reset seems to work on my GPS. Here is the new version:

http://www.gpspassion.com/upload/sewe_0_1.exe

To send a system message press left soft button, select message with up/down and send with enter. Return without sending a message with left soft button.

Excellent Martin
Thank you very much.
I have tried all the commands and they work great. This is exactly what I needed for my smartphone, since I occasionally have to perform a factory reset of my GPS to get it to work.

Thanks again,
~Rob

Very nice indeed, "upgraded" the title of the thread as well + summary in first message ;-)

Would it be possible to add a little timer maybe to see how long the resets take ?

This is a great tool. Thanks.

One suggestion: how about showing the SBAS status?

Thanks Gpspassion for keeping this thread tidy and with a better title! I'll add a timer output showing time since last fix. Arman68, you can see SBAS status in the text outout. The Q value shows the type of fix where 1 is GPS and 2 is DGPS, the DT value is the time since the last DGPS update. I found that there still is a bug in the averaging so the center red dot is not always the average of the last three minutes.

New version 0.2 available now! The first post is updated with the new links.

- Added command to select specific SBAS satellite (My GPS always locked on to the Egnos test satellite and last week they did something with the signal strength i think so it got dropped all the time, so now you can select satellite manually)
- If less than 12 ordinary satellites are in view the SBAS satellite shows on the map and its PRN is printed after DS:
- All SiRF commands are now in the menu, faster/easier selection
- An NMEA log file can be created, it will end up in the same directory as the exe and is named "log.nmea"
- No more dropped messages
- Averaging bug finally fixed
- A timer shows the number of seconds since the last fix

I see that this thread has been read more than 500 times. Hasn't anyone except gpspassion, hotdram and arman68 tried it. I would like more ideas on things that could be implemented.
/Martin

Thanks for the new version.
Yes that's the "magic" of forums, a lot of reads, not always a lot of comments, it can be frustratiing but it's generally a good sign that people are happy with what they're getting ;-)

Will try the new log feature when I get my smartphone back, does it auto number the file log0x.nmea ? So as to not erase a previous log ? That's a problem I keep having with spgps.exe on my pocketpc. Talking of which I need to try sewe on my iPAQ 6915, who knows, it might work !

Maybe you could add a feature to read the firmware version, that would require switching to SiRF.

Other additions:
- restart timer if new reset is sent

Glad I tried on my 6915, it seems to be working fine, that should bring in more testers ;-) Will try on other PDAs and if confirmed, will update the news item. Ok tried on the 6515 and it seems ok, the Qtek G100 and Mio A710 froze though, could be due to different baudrates 9600 and 57600, could you add a setting for that possibly ?
