I am the owner of a new Axim X51v and am trying to decide between these two GPS receivers, or open to other models. I already have IGuidance v3 loaded on my Axim. I have have used that since version 2.1.3 with my HP Laptop and GlobalSat BU-353.
I plan on selling the BU-353 and getting a bluetooth dongle for my laptop so I can use the new BT receiver with either pda or laptop. I plan to use my GPS device on the golf course as well as in the car, so I figure because of the size the Holux GR-240 is the way to go. The one question i have is does anyone know what firmware the GR-240 comes with and is WAAS enabled out of the box.
Any opinions on the receiver to get is appreciated. Price isn't a major issue. |

| I just order both of them. I get myself the BT-359W and my friend the GR-240. Don't know how they are yet, but they'll be here w/in the next few days. I'll let you know the firmware on the GR-240 |

hi bradm20, Please tell us about your experience with Gr240 and BT359. I am also considering the issue of buying one of these two receivers.
Thanks,

| I just decided to go with the GlobalSat BT-359W. I really liked the size of the Holux GR-240 but it seemed like that was about all it had going for it. The GlobalSat seemed to be superior in every aspect other than size, and it still is pretty small itself. Plus I trust the GlobalSat brand more than Holux. |

| The biggest difference most likely will be the fact that the Holux has a dedicated on/off switch, whereas the Globalsat uses the auto-off feature. For me, the switch better lends itself to using it as a semi-permanent solution in the car with a constant power source and the serial to PDA connection. That way, it's always fully charged for bluetooth connection while on foot. |

Yes that's a deciding factor...a good way to run out of batteries like I did again today by forgetting to turn off the switch on my 240 test unit. Can't recall how many times this has happened to me since I got my first BT GPS back in 2002 ;-)
Did some side by side testing of the 240/359 in Paris today, both did well, it seems the 240 is a tad less sensitive, which is no surprise given the smaller antenna. I'll look at the tracks tomorrow to see if this has an impact and then on TTFF in difficult conditions.

| I can't tell what is the firmware for the Holux GR-240 but I can tell you that the reception of this "newer" GR-240" is worse than the GPSlim 236. |

Well, I just got the two GPSs from the FexEd guy, and so I can only test it indoor. No driving test yet. The reception of the older unit (236) is great even in door compare to this newer 240 unit. Compare to "240" unit, the "236" gets signal right after I turned it on, and I see more satellites on Iguidance 3.0 and Tomtom 5. I think it's because of the small size of the "240" which make it less sentitive to get signal.
As for the GlobalSat BT-359 I haven't connect yet, but will keep you guys update. |

Yes that's not abnormal, smaller antenna->lower signal level, and to get a cold fix you need at least 28dB-Hz signal and indoors that's not easy to get, but how often do you need to a get fix indoors ? Won't be a problem outdoors though. Then the 240 will track down to 15dB-Hz like other SS3 receivers.

| Well, we're all eager to see how this device compares with the 236. If the sensitivity is noticeably worse, then I see no reason to spend more money for less. I suppose the sheer size is novel, but the 236 is surely no brick. |

| I have to say I am glad I went with the GlobalSat BT-359W from Semsons instead of the Holux. I have only had the GlobalSat for a day but the thing is amazing. It is also much smaller than I was expecting from the pics. |

Matter of fact, I put the GPS inside the glove box,(indoor, I believe), and connect the live power straight to it from the battery. I've never put it on top of the dashboard. If anyone has the 236, and it's working fine then I see no reason to upgrade to the 240 unless you want the small size. It's really small, and better built quality than the 236.
And for the BT-359, its reception is great indoor & outdoor. I have a few problems with the connection between the unit & my Axim x51v. I could pair the devices together yet, couldn't get the sattelite signal even though the BT-359's green light(satellite) shows that it's working fine. That might be just me, so I dont have any complains. |

So, you couldn't get the sat signal, yet you don't have any complaints?
Also, were you unsatisfied in any way with the 236 to want to get the 240, or were you just charmed by its size? |

I can't complaint because I was playing w/ it just for just a short period of time.

A friend of mine was in need of the GPS so I let him have my 236 unit. It was working perfectly fine, never have a problem with it. I think I like the old 236 more than the 240, and even the Globalsat, because the 236 has input for the external antena ( It helps if we go near the high buildings, trees & under freeway bridges.) |
