UPDATED20060722"Landscape" GPS Navigation on WM Smartphones Samsung i320 - Motorola Q

TomTom v5.20 runs fine on the Samsung i320, but mind the "crushed" menus and the "mixed up" keyboard! Good data transfer speeds thanks to Edge, too !
The Samsung i320 is the hands down "form factor" winner compared to the GPS equipped T830 and hw6515
News Item on the portal For a while we thought only the USA would get the "extra slick" Motorola Q Windows Mobile Smartphone with its hi-resolution 320x240 landscape screen, not so, with Samsung offering a similar model with the i320.
As far as GPS navigation goes, I was fairly optimistic since both the operating system and the resolution are known factors. ALK have announced a version for the Q but it doesn't appear to be available yet so I gave the following a try:
- ROAD NAVIGATION
- TomTom Mobile
- Tested with version 5.20
- GPS receivers used : TomTom MkII and Globalsat BT-338 - discovered and used fine
- Navigation map displays normally in 2D and 3D modes
- Configuration menus are available via the numeric keys and the menus can be accessed even though they are a bit "crushed"
- Address entering is a bit difficult as typing a "t" gives a "p", so you have to fumble around, it works in the end
- Screen shots :

The text overlaps the icons in the menus, but no other display problems were noted
- Route Navigate v7
- Test version came in!
- Installation went smoothly, Bluetooth GPS detected and internet activation
- As with TomTom, address entry is made difficult by an incorrect mapping of the keyboard, you have to fumble around but it works.
- Similar features as on the PocketPC Navigate 7 version tested >> HERE <<
- Screen shots :

- Destinator SP - v5
- Does not launch even with a manual installation of the .cab files, will need to check with v6 when it becomes available
- MAP VIEWER/ALL TERRAIN NAVIGATION
- Memory-Map SP v5.07
- Runs normally with both topo and aerial maps
- Very good use of the Hi-Res screen, full screen display would "top it off" !
- Screen shots :

- Microsoft Pocket Streets 2005
- All features work as expected
- Screen shots :

- GPSDash SP :
- Display is "zoomed in" and not very usable
- Screen shots :

| I can install TomTom but when I try to run it freezes the device for a few seconds then I get a crash screen saying that gwes.exe has encountered problems. After that, the backlight and screen timeouts are set to never expire, which I assume TomTom is doing to keep the screen on while active. |

I've had the same error message come up when using Agile Messenger on the Q. I do not think it is a Q specific issue though. If you backup and do a hard reset, then install TomTom on a fresh device, followed by you other apps, it may work.
gwes.exe is a system excutable of Windows Mobile operating system. The Graphics, Windowing and Events Subsystem (GWES) is responsible for all graphical output and all interactions with the user. The drivers that reside in the GWES address space include display drivers, printer drivers, keyboard drivers, mouse drivers, and touch screen drivers.
Disabling Error Reporting in the System Settings may help. |

How did you get TomTom to install on the i320 - I have tried and can't get it to run.
This is what I have done - copied all to Micro SD Card then moved the TomTom folder to the My Documents folder on the phone itself then copied shortcuts to TomoTom Mobile.exe and TTGPSEng.exe to the Start Menu.
Any help would be great. |
