Wow, hats off to Tin Man for writing such a detailed step by step guide.

Some minor improvement:

7) In Mio Transfer Hack, indeed you can only go up to \My Flash Disk, \Windows, or \Storage Card, but not the absolute root (\). I used to switch between SD and Flash icon to get to the root, too. But here is a faster trick > Simply click on MP3 or Photo icon, it will take you to \ right away. No more switch back and forth.

10) Actually, whatever you do with MioMap in \My Flash Disk, you don't even have to soft reset to make it work. I even started MioMap while it's still connected via ActiveSync.

Thanks! It was the least I could do. This place has been a an excellent resource, and was totally unexpected when I bought my 310x.

Cool tip! (Faster than switching to SD.)

I kinda assumed that, but there was one time I couldn't get it to work without a soft-reset. So I included that in the list just to be safe (well, assuming it doesn't lead someone to an accidental hard-reset ).

Mike

I've successfully hacked my Mio C310x, changed Data.zip but couldn't get ActiveSync to work (sorry for being so ignorant!). I have not installed ActiveSync 4.2 on my computer 'coz I did not find it anywhere to download. Could someone pls post the link where I can download ActiveSync 4.2 to install on my laptop. Thanks a lot in advance

After I hack my MIO I want to install some charts for inland waterways and lakes and maps for Europe( Greece and Italy).
questions:
1.What map/chart formats would be compatible with the MIO? Also do I have to purchase these maps or are there some free versions?
2. Do I need to install any additional programs?
3. is it possible to add PDA functions like contacts, To-do lists etc and where would I get these programs?
thanks for all the info. this is a great forum.

There are some freeware programs for the Pocket PC available, they may work on the C310x (I am still waiting to have mine delivered).

For instance, here is a "To Do" app: http://www.pdagold.com/software/detail.asp?s=1311

There are many other free programs on that site to do all sorts of things.

It is not possible to install waterways and lakes on your mio unless Tele Atlas provides them in fbl-format.
Maps for Europe can be used out of the box from an official bought sd-card.
The use of these maps are restricted to the supplied sd-card.
If you try to copy them to your flash memory or a bigger sd-card they will not function,
because they are connected to the serial number of the supplied sd-card.

Adding separate countries downloaded from somewhere on the net is an entirely different matter.
You will need another license file (license.db). Depending on the combination of maps you want to use it will work, but sometimes not for all maps.

I think the iGO actually produce maps in the fbl format based on whatever format TeleAtlas supplies them with, but anyway, you can indeed add all kinds of "raster" maps some being free (check the worldmap database on the portal) using OziCE -> see this guide http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=53375

@penyos - there are several apps that do that, but I generally use the free version of TCPMP that plays Videos as well, see the separate thread about that.

@littlechris - you can get AS here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/default.mspx - added link to first message

@Tin man - thanks for reposting and for updating, I'm linking it from the first message.

I agree with you. But I still have a question here. So, they would store the map in the internal "storage" rom, but not the rom image. If I hacked the system, and deleted some maps, then hard reseted it, the original programme will come back, but the map will not come back. Right?

Thanks.

I just ordered my Mio C310X and had a few questions.

1) can you use the british female voice with the english maps?
2) what are the "must do" fixes that are recommended
3) is the unit color white or grey?

Thanks

Got my MIO during Circuit City's Black Friday sale so far love it! Actually it was a very interesting experience beating the crowd. You can read it here: http://amkravets.blogspot.com/2006/11/black-friday-how-i-got-what-i-wanted.html if you want.

Now for questions, where can I find accessories for MIO c310x? I want to get the case and the stylus, MIO's website says US eShop is coming soon, but when?

Also, don't you think that since there is a place to put the stylus on the back of car holder and GPS is touch screen, MIO should have included stylus as part of original accessories? I'm going to buy it anyway, but would have been nice to have it now since the only way to turn device on/off is with the bottom switch which is accessible only with stylus...or toothpick.

And lastly, I guess I need to turn off MIO completely (on/off switch), otherwise it still consumes battery even if in "soft off" mode, no?

thanks,
Alex

Hi.... I posted this on another thread but was asked to post here instead....

Noobie here. I just unlocked my mio c310x and everything was working dandy. However, I had to hard reboot my system and after doing so the "original" mio shell returned. Active Sync was no longer able to recognize my mio and the DVD program also does not recognize my mio. Asides from that, the gps stuff still works great. Any idea how I can hack into the system again?

Thanks in advance!

Cant really help you out, but basically wanted to know why you hacked the MIO right out of the box?

What are the benefits you expect.

I have one on order and want to know if I should do it or not.

Check out the first link in the first message to see what this lets you do, basically you can use it as a full mobile platform, not just a GPS.

@doggie - I believe I did more than just tell you to repost in the proper thread, did you try what I suggested ?
