1. Install Mio Transfer from Mio Map CD/DVD.
2. Download Mio Transfer Hack (http://www.gpspassion.com/upload/Mio_Transfer_Hack.zip), extract it into the folder where you installed Mio Transfer.

Let me see if I can explain this in plain English for everyone.

1) Install Mio Transfer on your computer (this let's you copy mp3's to the mio c310x). Search for and download Mio Transfer Hack. Rename the real mio transfer that you just installed to something else and copy the hacked mio transfer to the same directory and rename it. Now when you run mio transfer it will allow you to see all of the mio's folders (not just the mp3).

2) Download and extract unlock-c510-********.zip. Browse to \My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap on your mio using the hacked mio transfer. Rename miomap.exe to miomapold.exe. Copy miotool.exe, miomap.exe, and unlock-c510-********.cab (that you just extracted) into the Miomap directory using hacked mio transfer.

3) On the mio, click on the mio map. It will run the file explorer instead (which is actually the miomap.exe file you just copied over renamed. Use this tool to browse to \My Flash Disk\MioMap\MioMap and run miotool.exe by double-tapping. This gives you a keyboard popup icon at the top left corner of the screen. Now doubletap the unlock-c510-********.cab file. It will open the cab for install but you can't do anything. Now tap the keyboard popup icon and it pops up a keyboard. Click back on the installer (to highlight it) then click on the return key on the keyboard. Click on "yes to all" to install all the files. Soft reset the mio.

4) install activesync 4.2 on PC. Mio will now connect. Go back and delete the miomap.exe file that you copied over. Delete the miotool.exe. rename the miomapold.exe back to miomap.exe. Go up one directory and go into the "Utils directory." Delete the french language file. You can go into the windows directory under desktop to rename the icons to things that make sense to english people :). Some of the icons will not work because the mio c310x lacks picture viewers, contacts, and stuff. Just run miomap to get back in the gps. If you hard-reset your unit you'll lose your unlock and have to redo most of it.

5. There are 2 versions of the c310x (one w/ a sticker that says 1 gig extra memory). One has 1MB internal flash the other has 2GB internal. I saw the 2GB model the day before the circuit city sale in the display case, but the day of the sale they had cartons of the 1MB unit they handed out (which I unfortunately got...I wanted the 2GB obviously). I don't know if the units are hackable to open up and replace the internal flash with a larger chip.

6. You can run the maps off of SD cards by making the \miomap\maps directory on the SD card. Otherwise you have to use regedit (in the tools directory after unlocking) to modify your unit as posted elsewhere to run maps anywhere off the SD card. You can split your maps between the two to make room on the internal flash for programs (i.e. put your home state and surrounding plus base in internal flash, put the rest of the US and Canada on SD).

Questions:

1) This unit has CE .NET 4.2 Core (so no CE apps). Can it be THEORETICALLY updated to have the full version of .NET 4.2 or even modified to run PocketPC (say if I want to retire my Ipaq)?

2) What is a good video player for it?

3) Is it possible to modify maps (say I want to add streets that don't exist)?

4) Does it have a bread crumb feature anywhere? (So I can see where I've been).

5) Is there another voice besides the man? Maybe a lady voice?

6) Can the unit be damaged or does the hard-reset automatically reset it to factory no matter what files are deleted or changed (i.e. what happens if I use the CE format tool on the internal flash device?). Can it be repaired if such damage occurs?

Nice work, I'll move up the steps to the first message, as for your questions.
1. No, that would require flashind the ROM with a ROM that has these features, note available
2. TCPMP
3. No
4. Yes, at least it's there on my C710 : cockpit/menu/tab#2(wheel)/Manage Track Logs. If they removed it on the C310x, you can always reactivate it with one of the skins in the skin exchange.
5. Looks like it's only Jason in US English, it seems there is an female UK English voice here http://my.pdamill.com/igo/voices/
6. Customizing won't damage it and a hard reset will set it straight, but yes flashing the ROM can. I wouldn't recommend that, especially since I'm not aware of any other functional ROM images.

New to GPS/PDA stuff. Anyone can tell me what's softreset? and what's hard reset? Thanks a lot.

I just found the info on MIO website. Hopefully someone else may find it useful.
When your device is not working properly, you can reset it.
Always try a soft reset first. This will only reset the software. To perform a soft reset, use a fine pointy object to push the little round button on the bottom of the device, between the earphones connector and USB port.
If the soft reset did not solve your problem, a hard reset might. It resets all software on the device. To perform a hard reset, put the off/on switch on the bottom of the device in the off position and wait for a moment. After that, put the switch back in the on position.

Does anyone have any information on putting any european maps on the 310x? I've tried putting some igo maps on the device, and I get the message "some maps are locked...". Is there a way to unlock the maps? Anyone?

does MIO have a customer service number that they answer? I used 1-866MIO-4-GPS tha came with the unit and nobody answers the phone, it keeps telling me that they are busy and keeps rerouting the call to a voice mail box.
I am trying to find out how to load charts for rivers and inland water ways. I have posted a question but nobody seems to have an answer.

This is what Mio Customer Support is going to tell you once you finally reach one by the end of this year.

Mio C310x, or for that matter any Cx10, is a closed platform. It means no expansion of functionality on Mio's part. If you are adventurous, you'll find lots of pointers on this forum on this regard, i.e., how to unlock your unit and install other software like OziExplorer CE, which might fit your needs if you have your own water maps. Also, if you are into Garmin maps, there are also other software that are "compatible" with Garmin map files, as long as they are not Garmin proprietary or locked. However, I don't like Garmin maps so I have no first hand experience with those software.

It's a shame that Mio's got a great hardware design and GPS Software combination but their customer services are not up to par with, say Garmin, in the western countries. In Taiwan, where Mio is based, its customer service is no.1 or 2 among GPS providors though. Maybe they also outsource their western customers services to India or somewhere like all other big guys did in the past 10 years.

Got my yesterday in the Black Friday sale.
First of all thanks to the contributors of this forum on customizing
the C310X. I have learned a lot!
While customizing and doing all these cool things sound very exciting
my question is what if I somehow screw up. Can I restore the factory
default MioMap software? The DVD that comes with the C310X has the
menu item "Restore MioMap V3.2 Software". However, I could never get
it to work. Whenever I click on it a dialog box will pop up with the
following message: "A navigation device has not been detected. Please
connect your PNA to your PC and restart Setup".
It doesn't matter that I have the unit properly hooked up to my
computer and could even explore the files in the unit using the
hacked Mio transfer software.
Has anyone successfully restore the factory software using the
DVD menu or otherwise?

Another question:
Is there any way to manually add points of interest (POIs) that are
missed by the existing database. For example at least two Circuit
City stores (they are not new) in my area are missing. Is there any
way I can fix this by myself?

The quality of the map/POI is not that great, at least for North
Carolina, US. In addition to the two missing Circuit City stores
I found the following errors in the 2 short days I own this device:

1. 2 roads in one town can only be looked up from under the heading
of an adjacent town.
2. I-40 Exit 281 is mislabelled as Exit 282.
3. One route has an impossible left turn.
4. Another route goes through a restricted access EPA compound.

If I had pad more than $150 I would have returned it.
Are this common errors in PNAs?

krayziehuh,
I got the same problem.
Unfortunately, I couldn't figure it out.
Please advise.
I ended up with hard reset and it came back to the original shell.

Thanks

I followed all the steps, everything seems to work well. But when I press the miomap icon, a window jumps up and says"you need at least 6mb of free ram to run this application. please free up some memory or adjust memory settings and try again". Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

How do you display the travelling speed on the mio 310x. I have tried different screens but no luck.

Also, is it possible to get updated maps from MIO. It sounds like that you are stuck with whatever maps came with it.
