UPDATED 20061127 Mio C710 : Before...After Always good fun to customize your AIO as seen here for previous devices and what can then be done after that.
The Mio C310x, C510 and C710 can be easily customized thanks to a "turnkey" kit. Here's how to do it :
1. Step by Step - Summary 1. Download the Unlock-C510-********.zip available on this site 2. Unzip the contents : Miotool.exe, miomap.exe and Unlock-C510-********.cab 3a. Via a Bluetooth connection from your computer (file transfer protocol), navigate to \my flash disk\miomap\MIOMAP and rename miomap.exe to miomap2.exe then transfer miomap.exe from the zip file to that folder and Miotool.exe and Unlock-C510-********.cab to the root folder of the Mio or 3b. Use MioTransferHack to transfer the file. 4. Click on the MioMap icon on the Main Shell, this will take you to the file browser 5. Click on Miotool.exe to get the keyboard 6. Clock on Unlock-C510-********.cab and use the keyboard if necessary 6. Soft reset 7. Delete miomap.exe and rename miomap2.exe to miomap.exe 8. That's it, you're done ! 2. Step by Step - Detailed explanations : click >> here << for ybarra's detailed version of the above. 3. Getting up and running quickly : click >> here << for Tin man's guide 4. Other links : _a. playing videos -> details _b. Download ActiveSync for your PC -> link _c. Finding compatible software -> link

At the risk of sounding ignorant, what exactly will this allow someone to do to/with their Mio?

| is it possible to delete installed maps without the bluetooth? like for a example you installed italy on the iternal memory on the 510 and now you want frencw. My thoughts were that is was possible with active senic like with a normal pda so you can brouwse through the system?? |

k, confirmed working. Some gotcha's: 1: Be sure to delete the francais file, else total commander will be in french 2: Some icons are in french 3: Do remember to have to miotool running (keyboard), since there are some dialogs that are bigger than the screen - so you need to be able to press escape on them
I've run a fair deal of programs now - including misc. mp3 players and video - all working as expected. Also, ActiveSync work nicely - finally browsable via usb!! However activesync 4.2 complains that it doesn't "work" (This version of Microsoft ActiveSync is not compatible with the connected mobile device...)
My Final task is to get it to create a network connection with my phone, so that I can use the internet with it! So far the bluetooth stuff only shows message gateway and file transfer :( Any hints appreciated. |

Ravi,
One great advantage of unlocking the Mio is that you will get access to the files on your Mio via Activesync. You can then use Explorer to shift files between the Mio and your PC. Effectively your Mio becomes a PDA. |

I feel I ought to mention in this thread that although customising your units is indeed fun, there are also dangers to it. I have seen people in other forums mention "osloader" that they have used to try and backup or restore the O/S on their units after digging into them. Unfortunately, this software can easily corrupt a WinCE installation, especially a bespoke one such as that used in these and older Mio units. Please dont try using it unless you are prepared for the consequences.
The program that is used to load these units initially and to upgrade the O/S in them is called "DNW", and is not publicly available, yet.
Im not trying to scare you guys, just make you aware of the problems that can easily arise if you dig too deep into your units. Having said that, if you are merely playing with the Mio software you should have no problems, just please be careful what you delete / modify once it is unlocked. |
If it ain't broke - don't fix it! |

I would like to know if anyone could install tomtom 5 in his 710 device. And... well, I´m interested in a video player too.
And the last one... When you customize your device... can you play music and navidate at the same time??
Thank you for your attention! |

Do you mind putting it in plain English so that even poor English reader like me can get a chance to make my C310x ActiveSync ready? I couldn't even get past the login/register page without a translation there. |
