UPDATED 20061013 - v3.2 update available, details >> HERE <<
Updated for the TMC feature, see below
Pictures that show the TMC pages (click on them to view a larger image):

After reading through the massive manuals of the new Mio C710 I felt that I just had to try it in real life so I have ordered one and expect it to arrive tomorrow.
Bear in mind that this is the European version of it. The software for US version looks much older.
After reading the manual it seems like MioMap v3 is a clever and fancier version of Navigon MN6 (not even released yet, but some important stuff is known). Just as MN6 it has "economical route" and not just "fastest" or "shortest".
A lot of thought seems to have gone into the software.
In addition to this it has TMC built-in (but the antenna still seems to be external) and most of Europe mapped. All this for a price just a tad above what I paid for my TomTom ONE just seven months ago. Nice!

I have asked the Swedish importer if there is any way to make screen dumps. Not received any answer yet though. It seems rather crucial to be able to do that I am going to write something in this thread.

No it can't be done AFAIK, you'll need to customize first and then use captce.exe see the RM800 customization thread for details.

Uuuuuh! I really don't feel like customizing at this point so any screen dumps will have to be made with a digital camera. But I will post my reflections on the unit here anyway.

I've had my C510 for a day now and all i can say is that this thing is the best satnav unit out there. I should know because in the past 6 mths I've had a TTgo, Navman 530, Nuvi 310 and a PDA with TT5. This thing seems to have taken the very best bits from everything else, wrapped it in a fabulous interface (makes everything else look crude by comparison) and given it to us at a great price. I paid £239 for it with all the euro maps on DVD. I have a 2G SD card which I will use for the euro maps & MP3's. If anyone has any questions, I'd be pleased to answer them...

I have a c510e and have a problem to remove maps. Do anyone know if it is possible to remove maps that is installed? I am thinking of map I put in myself. I would rather have the maps on my SD card instead of using all the free space in the gps.

Hmmm, this far I haven't managed to pair the C710 to an Ericsson T39m or a SE P900. Perhaps they are too old?
Some say the C710 has Bluetooth v2.0 and some say v1.2. I guess it shouldn't matter. They get contact and I enter the pass key on the phone and then on the Mio, but after that the Mio just continues to ask for pairing.
I will take the unit on a drive tomorrow. Haven't done that yet.
I have noticed that the favourites Home and Work must be set with coordinates or address. By clicking the map, a cursor is placed there. When you set the address for one of the favourites and select "set by coordinate" the coordinates of the cursor is displayed (and can be changed or used as is). First I thought I had to manually find out and enter the coordinates.
Another thing is the way one enters an address. If the address is in another town you have to press Change city. Then you can select a city in the list of recently searched cities. If not in the list one has to search for it to add it to the list of recent cities.
Perhaps a tad more work than on the TomTom, but then there's no doubt in which city the selected street is. On the TomTom I sometimes was unsure where all those listed roads really led. Sometimes the planned route was 30 km off due to this. I had selected the wrong "instance" of the road with the same description.
Apart from the above three matters it seems to be a nice unit with good looking graphics with a screen refresh at least on par with the TomTom ONE software.
The TMC seems to work too. Not a lot of info though (when I select one piece of TMC info). I thought I was going to be able to read all the info about the traffic reports, just like on the web page in Sweden: http://trafikinfo.vv.se/trinimap/map.aspx
I wonder if this info isn't transmitted or if Miotech just don't it?

So then it's probably my old phones that are the creating the problem? Miotech should have a list of phones that should work.

Ooo.
Can you take some pics of the TMC? How is it overlaid onto the maps? The manuals from Mio's website don't even mention TMC.
Hope your trip goes well. :) |

Some feedback on the TMC function:
- It does seem to spend a lot of time searching for appropriate stations. Low sensitivity in the receiver? It doesn't perform as expected though. None of the manuals describe the TMC function. One of them mentions the word TMC once.
- It loads all reports it receives (in Sweden there are different TMC areas) and you can have them sorted so the closest ones are displayed first in the list. Only when you have entered a route it warns for traffic reports. You can disable this, have it ask you about a detour or leave it all to fully automatic.
Pictures that show the TMC pages (click on them to view a larger image):

This is your usual GPS satellite status screen. An unusual piece of information is the Accuracy number. You can choose Time Sync in the upper right corner. There you can tell the C710 to do automatic synchronization to satellite time (with correct timezone).
Tapping the TMC button on this screen brings you to the following list of reports (if yet collected by the TMC receiver):

The list can be sorted with the closest report first (default) or by type. If there are more reports than can be showed on one page you have to tap the left/right arrows.
You can select one report and tap Show. This shows the report as seen on the map when driving. No additional information is displayed. To get back to the list you have tap five buttons (a bit tedious).
If you tap the Settings button this page is shown:

For me this page usually shows that it is scanning for another station and "testing". It would be really nice to have this described by Miotech. I do not know what the orange bar means. Perhaps it is signal strength, but it can suddenly start scanning despite an all orange bar.
Showing reports
When a traffic report is shown, by selecting one and tapping Show (see one of the screens above in this post), screens looking like these are shown:

The blue on the road (a bit paler than on the C710 screen --- blame my digital camera) belong to the traffic report.

or through the "cockpit view":

I'll continue to add to this post as I find out more about the TMC function.

Thanks for sharing.
I think the reason the manual says so little is that the TMC feature was added by Mio at a late stage, it's not available in the original iGO software. Integration looks pretty good, does it estimate the delays like TomTom so you can make an informed choice ?
RDS reception is often a problem as the stream is shared with the FM broadcast so it can get weak, that's why I like TomTom's trafic via GPRS as you can access it wherever there is a GSM network.

Does Miotech ever release software updates? I can't find any place on their support page where such updates would be found (even for older units).
