Replace the initial warning message
If you want to replace this warning message and disclaimer that comes up on initial boot-up, do the following:
1. Create a GIF image named warning.gif
2. Make it any resolution you desire, but keep the size down to less than 320 by 215 (W by H) with any picture or text you desire. I used 200 by 120 for mine with a message saying "Warning - Watch the road"
3. This image will be displayed centered on the screen allowing you to more easily reach the X button to close it. Smaller (within reason) is usually better.
4. Copy this gif to a new folder (create it yourself) on the iWay's hard disk. Create SkinsUpdate, then create another folder inside this one named Default. Anything you place here will end up in the hidden Skins\Default folder.
5. Copy 2410_8.ldr (the boot-loader) to the root folder of the hard drive and reboot the iWay. After 15-30 seconds it will update and reboot. You'll now see your new warning screen instead of the default one. For other languages, the other warning01, 02, 03, 04, and 09 are replaced.
Note: 2410_8.ldr is part of all the recent updates from Lowrance. It's also on the Nav-Teq DVD and in either of the 1.4.0 downloads from last August or 1.7.0 from June of '06.

Adding more than 10 data overlays to the screen
When you get to the maximum of 10 overlay items, you can add more by switching to off-road mode and then add from the new (expanded) list of optional data overlay items.
When you switch back to turn-by-turn mode, the data overlays remain.

Convert your custom (within reason) skins to 1.7.0 format
In order to use customized skins you made for previous versions you need to do a few things to "clean house" and make them work with the new menus and find pages.
The background image (Background.jpg),title bar (TitleBar.jpg), an exit button (ExitPsh.jpg) graphics need to go in the Dialogs folder. Everything else in your custom Dialogs folder can be deleted or renamed. The iWay will pick up any missing files from the default skin on the hidden partition.
The FindMenu, MapMenu, MainMenu, and SytemSettingsMenu can all be deleted or renamed. The default skin's menus will then be used.
The same goes for all other menus you customized. If there are features that don't work with 1.7.0 (stuff from the default skin) just delete or rename them and the default's menus will be used.

Not sure what topic this belongs in, so move it as nessasary. This is in reguards to the transfer data function. What is saved when you press the save button. It creates a file called data.usr. I would like to know if anyone knows what is contained in this file.
Thanks Bill |

Data.usr contains your address book and any saved routes.

| It also contains any trail data that you might have saved as well. |

Simulator: When you plan a route, it's saved temporarily under Route Via Destinations as "Temporary Route". If you have no GPS signal (running indoors for example) you'll get a question pop-up asking if you want to simulate the route. You may also simulate the route if you're not moving by turning on the GPS Simulator manually. The iWay will run the route in approximately real-time using the NavTeq database's speed data. The pause, stop, fast-forward, and fast-reverse buttons appear to allow you to speed up the simulation etc. Holding the fast-forward allows skipping forward about 10 times normal speed.
The GPS Simulator is a feature of the iWay 350c and should be documented in its manual. Eventually, it'll show up in the 500c manual (I hope).
My Trails: Your routes are tracked as you navigate them and saved automatically. When the My Trails category is turned on, you'll see bread crumbs of your path. You can modify the trails by giving them names and changing the colors. You might use this feature for saving favorite routes or for tracking your actual path when in off-road mode for example.
You can navigate a saved trail and edit data, but I can't tell you exactly what it's best used for. This feature was added to version 1.3.0 or 1.4.0 after the manuals were written and doesn't appear to be well documented.

I guess I'll start by saying I bought my 500c in dec 05 after doing months of research on all the different brands. Even with all the early problems I decided on the iWay. This GPS rocks - lol The others may be a bit better in some areas, but if I had to do it over again I would still get the iWay. In any case, I'm glad to see the 1.7.0. is out. I just installed it yesterday so I haven't gotten to all the new tweaks, but I love the fact that it now has a picture viewer. I do wish it functioned a bit more like the mp3 selectors do. To browse to a folder and play all in sequence, random, or all subfolders in seq or random. I really wish it didn't pull from my music files. I don't care to see the album art. I would like one folder of just my kids, perhaps another of cars, nature, ect and be able to isolate them, only playing the ones I want vs. scanning the entire drive, minus the skins folder.
Questions: 1. Since there are a number of pseudo-programmers on here, is this something that could be customizable to allow selectable folders or is this like compiled code in the hidden partition. If not it's still a cool feature. Perhaps in the next patch.
2. Since I know for a fact I will never use any languages other then US, English, Spanish, and perhaps French for the GPS. Can the other .dat files somehow be removed to save space w/o crashing the unit, or it having some quirky behavior? |

You know I was thinking about same thing too. I don't care for all the extra languages. I think Lowrance is trying to go global now and compete with the big boys.

The dat files are loaded in the hidden partition, which is fixed @ 10GB. Deleting them would do you no good.
I haven't found anything in the code that allows modification to the picture viewer, but your idea of using the same code functions as the media player uses is a good one. |

| I tried to follow the instruction that ST-Bob offered to replace the warning message.... Well I took one of the photo pictures with good quality and high resolution and resized it to 200 X 150. Then I reloaded the unit and the picture replaced the original warning message. The only problem is that the quality of picture is very poor, it has big 'grains' and its quality is much worse than original warning message. Is it what supposed to be so or I just did something wrong with resizing of picture? Maybe picture viewer shows the picture in worse quality than the original warning dialog message? |

What type of picture was it and what program did you use to edit it? What I did with mine is create a blank background with a thin red line all the way around it. I inserted some text in the blank area and then saved it as warning.gif
The iWay 500c doesn't do true 24 bit color. I think the GIF format only supports 8 bit palette color. I used Windows default palette on my PC which seems to yield a fairly pleasing color dither on the iWay. I use Micrographx Picture Publisher, but many other image editing programs will do a good job too. I used 75 DPI and made a graphic 160 wide by 120 tall. Try changing your Windows color scheme back to Windows Default before rescaling an image.

The simulator has two basic speeds. Normal (1X) and about 5X. Holding down the fast-forward key makes it go about 10X I think.

| Today I noticed one interesting thing about searching POI. I had a route I followed and then I tried to find one of the POI categories. From all of the option to sort results of the search I was interested in ones "near root". It gives you 2 data: 1st column is distance to the exit and the second column is the distance from that exit to POI. While I continued to drive I noticed that distance in both columns changed. I could understand that the distance in the first column obviously was reduced since I've moved to the exit but I was surprised that the distance in the second column was reduced as well. I think that the distance from the exit to the POI is some constant. It's quite convenient feature to know the distance "near route" but is it work properly or I'm confused...? |
