Modified Firmware for the PB400

quote:
Disclaimer:
1: Flashing your GPS with anything other that standard Packard Bell firmware will invalidate your waranty. If you are unsure in any way then don't do it.
2: The firmware(s) below whilst tested are provided as is with no warranty or liability on behalf of the author or the owner(s) of GpsPasSion.com

So far we have 3 modified firmwares available. Below are links to them and an explaination about what they do differently.

Windows CE Autoboot Firmware
This firmware boots your GPS 400 to the Windows CE desktop without the need to custom install anything. From here you can install all your favourite apps and GPS software. There are 2 versions: One based on the older 1.02 / Destinator 5.1 firmware and the other based on the newer 1.07 / Destinator 5.5 firmware. Both do the same thing the same way internally.

Download:
Autoboot 1.02 / Dest 5.1 (Older version) http://tinyurl.com/p46eg

Autoboot 1.07 / Dest 5.5 (Newer Version) http://tinyurl.com/rpo2j

Autoloader firmware
This firmware is based on the Older 1.02 / Destinator 5.1 firmware and will autoload a custom install cab file (of your own making!) whilst you are setting up the date / time after a hard reset. This means you have all the software from the custom install cab ready to go straight after setup.
This does not itself boot to the Windows CE desktop and no request has been made for it to do that as of yet.

Desinator 5.1 Autoloader firmware: http://tinyurl.com/re48k

quote:
Autoloader firmware Useage:
Create a folder on your PC called <<Whatever>> **NOte <<whatever>> means name it what you want but stick with this folder!!
Create your Custom install cab file using WinCE manager and save it as cust400.cab in the <<Whatever folder>>
Then grab the photoviewer.exe installer from here: http://www.gpspassion.com/download/CustG400_GpsPasSion.zip and put it in the <<whatever>> folder.
Now use winzip to extract your cust400.cab file into the <<whatever>> folder as well so it is now in .cab form and extracted.
Create a folder on your SDMMC Card called install (Do NOT change the folder name it is important!)
Copy the contents of the <<whatever>> folder to the install folder on the SDMMC Card.
Copy eboot.nb0 and nk.nb0 from the downloaded file to the root of the SDMMC card.
Apply the Vulcan death grip to reflash

Whilst setting up time / date ect all the contents of the install folder are installed to the PB 400 in the locations you have specified in the .cab file.
No need to soft reset.

I hope this makes things clearer for everyone.

I come bearing gifts...

Modded 1.02 / Dest 5.1http://tinyurl.com/p46eg

Modded 1.07 / Dest 5.5http://tinyurl.com/rpo2j

Both have been tested and work.
Consider these as a proof of concept as very minimal changes have been made to achieve what I wanted to do which leaves up plenty of scope for future projects.

Thank you Packard Bell for the unencrypted firmware and also GpsPassion for finding these rare beasties. From what I have seen NO ONE not even Packard Bell have these as a download.

Let me know how you go with these lads.

Regards,

Psi

Well done Psi, most appreciated.

Is there a reason as to why you have needed to use firmware 1.02 and not the later 1.07 with the Dest 5.1 pack....?

As a side note...

Has anyone looked at the 'need' for the large duplication of files created within the Windows folder of the Destinator app after the 5.5 update...? I'm not sure if they have anything to do with the quicker launch of Destinator (far quicker than TomTom) but it does seem to be a duplication of what can be found in Destinators default folder.

Vimes.
The firmwares are both original apart from the slight mod done by me. 1.02 has 5.1 installed as standard and 1.07 has 5.5 so I have left them as they were.

Yes there is a lot of duplicated files in the windows folder some are needed there, most are not. I don't know why it was done this way as all it does is hog resources.

Regards,

Psi

Doc thanks for the updated firmware this will make life eaiser as for the post codes since changing to the update firmware the post code has loaded every time
another thing that I done was to edit the wince.txt file that came with the new maps I removed the "rds tmc" from the txt file dont no if that has helped but have not had any probs with post codes.
again thanks Geordie

No worries. As I said I did this for my own purposes, but if it helps anyone out they're welcome to it.
Please let me know of any problems you get.

@ Gpspassion. The Dshell.ini file is not in a .cab file. It is in the firmware file structure and can readily be identified if you know what to look for.

@ Geordie.
Tnx fer ifo re postcodes. I'l give that a go. 73's.

PsiDOC,

I am really impressed with your posts and things you have got the GPS400 to do. I am only wanting to run TomTom 5 on it instead of the Destinator software.

I have found you can run TomTom without awakening WinCE.

First put the "tomtom navigator.exe" and "data.chk" files that normally install into the "\Program files\Navigator" folder into the "\Destinatorapps\Destinator\" folder, then rename "tomtom navigator.exe" to "Destinator.exe". This makes any reference to "Destinator.exe" actually load TomTom. Then copy the folder "TomTom" that would normally install into the "\My Documents" folder into the "\My Documents" on the GPS400.

(You can get these files from a PDA installation or previously awakened GPS400 installation).

Thats it. Now when you press the "road" icon or the "Navi" button TomTom will load.

As you know how to & have managed to modify the firmware on the GPS400, is it possible to have these 3 files and 1 folder "inserted" into the firmware so that it loads TomTom straight from a hard reset?

Fingers crossed and best regards.

Bon-ja-mon,
Yes it is possible to insert the files in the relevant places, however I will not do it.
If I start distributing firmwares with tom tom in place instead of Destinator I am infringing copyright laws and can leave myself in a whole world of trouble.
I hope you understand
Sorry about that.

Psi

I understand. Is this something I could learn, or be pointed in a direction to enable me to do it solely for my own GPS400? This would mean I didnt have to connect to a PC to reload the files if the battery goes flat. Your help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Why not create a custom.cab install file to reload all your bits and bobs and keep it on the sd card? That's the way I am doing it at the moment.

Si

What program do you use when creating your custom.cab install file, is it something like cab wizard.

Thanks

PsiDOC,

How do you get a custom.cab file to install from a standard hard reset that leaves you at the GPS400 destinator screen with the 4 buttons?

I wanted to have the firmware as standard with the few TomTom files pre-inserted rather than the awakened WinCE screen.

Kind regards

Bon-Ja-Mon
The way I would do that would be to create my custom.cab file and have navigator.exe (renamed to destinator.exe) overwrite the Destinator.exe, drop in the data.chk file beside it and copy the tomtom.ini file (can't remember the exact name sorry) into it's place in \my documents\TomTom to make everything work 100%. This .cab file can be created in wince cab manager. Name the .cab file cust400.cab
Now put the cust400.cab file in a folder called install with the photoview.exe file from the original custom install in the downloads section here. Now unpack the cust400.cab file using winzip into the install folder as well. (Reason being is you need both the .cab file in it's entirety and in unpacked form to install if we don't have the windows CE Desktop running)

Upload the install folder to the root of your SDCard.

How can we call this a fter a hard reset? By using some sneaky tactics and a little bit of editing in the firmware.
Here's how:
Edit the firmware to call \sdmmc\install\photoview.exe, - which is the installer - from the [run once] section in the Dshell.ini instead of the destinator setup and say yes to the overwrites.
What we are doing in effect is getting the destinator initial setup to call the install.

Viola TomTom 5 installed legally at hard reset. ;)

I can make the firmware changes. All you have to do is make the .cab file

Regards,

Psi
