UPDATED BY GPSPSASION 060612

merrypig brings us the bad news that there will no longer be an iGuidance version for Europe, see here

The next version of iGuidance is not going to be version 2.2 as expected. It will be version 3. That means it will not be "only" new software, but it will also include new map data.

iGuidance 3 will include a version optimized for UMPC's (Ultra Mobile PC's) and CarPC's. This new UMPC / AutoPC version can also work on laptop/PC, which might turn out to be the preferred one by end users since resolution and font size, as well as menu are much bigger. Please keep in mind that UMPC version is set to full screen mode by default, and you may use the "f" key to toggle full screen mode on and off.

iGuidance 3 will for the first time include Alaska and even Nunavut territory in Canada.

Very nice. Thanks for the info. Let's use some of the screenshots from http://www.semsons.com/ignavsof.html to ilustrate UI changes:

Nicer and bigger buttons. "Itinerary" feature lets us input several stops:

Some long time iGuidance users who like to personalize map colors, change threshold for seeing more roads at different zoom levels, or basically try to improve things that generaly speaking work well as is, may still want to ask if customization through THEME.INI file will still be possible in iGuidance 3.0. Well, I cannot say for sure yet at this point in time, so don't take my word for it, but I just opened iGuidance.exe in a hex editor and here is what I see:

It does appear THEME.INI has been enabled. I would recommend everyone to remove or temporarily rename their own THEME.INI file so we can see iGuidance 3 the way it has been designed. Let's play with it for a bit to get a better feel of what we like/dislike, and then each of us can decide what changes we need (if any).

Excellent news, especially for users who want more Canadian coverage! I'm glad that iNav continues to upgrade their product (regardless of an upgrade policy), unlike Routis.

The use of the term AutoPC is a bit of a misnomer. I own an AutoPC in my car, it's a Clarion AutoPC 310C, and it is a custom version of Windows CE 2.0. UMPC runs on x86 platform OSes, and is completely different. [I don't blame iNav, I was at a system integrator event and the presenter from Microsoft (i.e. he works for Microsoft) has a slide show and one slide said Windows Mobile is based on the Windows desktop version, after the presentation I asked him exactly about that and he stood by that statement plus adding "oh, Windows CE is very old now". I did some research and proved he's wrong. well I digress.) BTW, the navigation software I use on the AutoPC is called Odyssey 2000, now no longer supported, by a company in San Diego; and the maps are directly sold by NavTech (or were, they also stopped updating the maps for this platform). I still use it for casual usage since it's in my car, but for serious trips, I use PDA or notebook, or both.

As far as I know, Microsoft has not reused the term AutoPC, and the whole AutoPC group was disbanded. I have no idea why iNav uses this term? There was only one more generation of AutoPC product after mine (310C) and then that was it, a very obscured platform, and got canned, similar to the SmartDisplay platform by Microsoft. (which ironically, I also own a piece of).

Thanks for that info. I personally never heard the term "AutoPC", but I knew immediately what iNav meant by it since it is similar to the (to me) known term "CarPC". A CarPC is a computer put into a car by people for the purpose of for example playing music, radio, video, GPS navigation, telephone integration, and anything else one may need. It is usually a home made Windows XP desktop PC, or it may be a purchased commercial product like the one on the above picture from MP3car.com store.

The reason a CarPC (AutoPC) has different requirements from for example navigation software than a laptop would, is because most CarPC enthusiasts use considerably smaller screen sizes, 7" or 8" typically, as opposed to the more common 14" or 15" displays seen on modern laptop computers these days. CarPC’s often use touch screens. The software used should be touch screen friendly and it should be usable on a small screen. By the way, such small VGA monitors are seldom seen in brick-and-mortar stores, but are easily available from specialized on-line retailers catering to the CarPC fans all over the world. Lilliput ( www.lilliputweb.net ) is a very popular brand of small monitors used for this purpose, but there are others, too.

MP3car.com is likely the best site around for people wishing to get ideas how to build their own CarPC (or AutoPC ;-)

The upgrade is $79, and I have another question - when I go to the upgrade page it says that Western Europe has been discontinued! Are they coming out with a new version - or are they no longer going to be producing a European version? - sheureka

"Shortcuts" is a new feature of iGuidance 3.0. It offers a quick access to search-by-distance of POI's like hospitals, gas stations, restaurants, etc. It also let's us enter "Home" location.

I'm really disappointed that version 3 does not offer 2 major upgrades I was hoping for. It has no mention of text to speech for reading street names in the description, so that must mean that was not added as a new feauture.
It also doesn't appear that they added any really significant amount of new POIs. I would like to be able to at least have all the major big box stores in the POI database. It currently lists nothing but some shopping centers and malls (with no listing of individual stores contained within)in the shopping category. What would be nice would be if it could look up POIs over an internet connection (in the same method it uses to look up the weather reports) and then route you there automatically.
That way you would have access to an unlimited amount of up to the minute POIs without storage space constraints on your PDA.

Do these "shortcuts" which can be sorted alpabetically or in distance order include user saved waypoints? If not, can you save your own waypoints another way and retrieve them alphabetically or in distance order?

Rancho1 text-to-speech is a feature some users desire, some don't. For me personally it would be a show stopper if iGuidance switched from the pre-recorded appealing lady voice to a robotic sounding TTS engine. It's a personal preference, though.

POI's categories I didn't count yet. But a brief look makes me think there is likely nothing new. I only counted restaurant sub-categories and I think now we have a few more of them then before. I counted 56 or 57 of them: African, American, Austrian, Balcan... I personally miss car repair centres. They used to be there prior to version 2 and they are not yet coming back in version 3. Keep your vehicles in good working condition or keep a phone number of a good towing company handy

LiteBright iGuidance has an old feature where you can store your favourites. You cannot search for then by distance, but they are organized alphabetically.

However, version 3 now has a new feature many users may like:

Itenerary allows us to add and organize stops along our route.
