Just got the Holux GM-270 receiver (thanks Tony!) and hope to have a review up by the end of tomorrow 10/29/02.
It seems to be an amazing device!

hehe...just beong objective!

It's interesting that getting distributors seems to be hard when you see all the excitment that these products generate...at least to us

Hopefully moves like Palm's Bluetooth GPS/Software bundle will make this a bit more mainstream.

I see now that this receiver can be bought in the US, but after reading the review I'm not sure should I jump on it or wait. My concern is that it looks like this receiver has bugs. Something is going on with Memplug Dual CF sleeve (possibly with some others too?), inability to switch to trickle mode. These issues may not be important, but if they do exist that suggests that there are problems with design/implementation of hardware or firmware. Any thoughts on that?

How well does it perform for in-vehicle navigation without the external antenna?

ASX - I agree. That MemPlug bug is a bit worrying and hard to explain given that it's the only incompatibilty case I know of. Also, it seems a bit strange that Holux would be the first to market with the a CF GPS using the IIe/LP chip. The others may be trying to offload their inventory but the performance is so much better that it's odd they would wait unless there were some unresolved problems. Haven't heard back on the trickle mode problem.

Vadsoom - Just like the BT GPS, it has to be seen to be believed. I can walk around my house and keep a signal. It *almost* seems more sensitive than the BT GPS.

Well I heard back from Holux and it seems they don't plan on supporting Trickle mode given the low power usage of the chipset. As stated in my review, it's not a deal breaker, but I wonder if it's really intentional since their utility has a "power save" mode.

I used it again today and the Memplug incompatibility "popped up" less ofern. This "on and off" problem is a bit hard to understand. Something about a "bridge" apparently. Anyway I wouldn't use that Memplug/Holux CF combo if I needed a 100% reliable solution.

If that's the case, what would you use?

I have a navigate software that does not support SiRF. So

1. how long would the battery last (compare to using SiRF)?
2. What about the reception?
3. What about the accuracy?
4. How to charge the GPS card's build-in battery?

Thanks a lot

1. As for battery life - My machine is an Ipaq 3955. Backlight is at 50%, auto off disabled, backlight on for the full time. Using the CF Plus sleeve, without the extra battery, and running Mapopolis (which reports "running/no fix") I get 240 minutes until the battery is at 30%. Tomorrow I'll try it with the CF extra battery in place and see how much more time I get. With the extra battery in the CF sleeve I get about 8 hours.

2. Reception is excellent. It is very sensitive.

3. Accuracy is the same as any other GPS.

4. No idea. The documentation makes no mention of this.

You might want to look at the Holux thread on PockepPCPassion.com and look for the reviews of the unit on this sit.

Hi paulkbiba

What I mean is "what if the software does not support the SiRF protocal".
I viewed the review of the Holux CF GPS card on this site. But the figure seemed to be got when the SiRF is on.
My software does not support SiRF, that's why I issue those questions.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your reply.

By default the unit puts out NEMA data. All the software I use takes only NEMA data and it works perfectly.

huang, can you tell us more about your program?
To answer your question, all SiRF based receivers work as well in NMEA and SiRF modes (except the Navman it seems that's happier in SiRF mode).

The Holux GPS is working great with my CF Expansion pack and an iPAQ 3670. A noticeable Fix improvement over the other 3 models I have owned (Navman CF, Pretec, Pharos).

Has anyone gotten the WAAS correction to work? I assume it will show up with a Fix type of 2 (DGPS) in the GGA NMEA statement when it is receiving the WAAS correction. I am monitoring the GGA statement and have not gotten a differential GPS fix with this receiver. Info on WAAS is hard to find on any of the vendor sites except in the spec's.
