Yes, return for repair...

Hot off the press at http://www.mio-tech.be/support/

August 8th, 2006
Message to all P550 users

Mio Technology has confirmed the presence of a technical flaw within the GPS function of a limited number of Mio P550 personal digital assistants (PDAs) on sale in Europe.

Users of the affected products may experience weaker that normal GPS reception leading to difficulties in securing a fix on the satellite signal. In technical terms, this will lead to a prolonged ‘Time to First Fix’.

This condition affects approximately 9% of Mio P550 units available in Europe that were manufactured and sold before August 2006.

Users are invited to return affected units to their point of sale where they will be sent on to the respective Mio Repair Centre and repaired free of charge. If returning the device to the original point of sale is not possible, please contact your local hotline number.

The two year warranty available on all Mio P550s manufactured before August 2006 and subject to this recall will be extended by three months.

As an added precaution, the remaining inventory of Mio P550s at dealers or distributors in Europe is being recalled for verification and repair if necessary.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I called Mio today to arrange the return. Nearly an 8 minute phone call at 35p a minute. Grrr

They are sending me an envelope to return the unit and expect it to be back with me in 5-10 working days. I'll let you know how it goes.

Doesn't sound too bad other than the wait on line, yes keep us posted and if it's not too late, maybe you can make a note of your serial number to see if you're getting a new unit ;-)

Gaaah. What do you do if you're a US customer that bought it from ebay off of x1387

edit: I don't see that text in the site?

Hello.

I am having a problem with M550: It seems that battery is drained very quickly when my MIO is switched off. From fully charged, it may take 2 or 3 days to be discharged completely.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thank you in advance

Agos

Hi

I guess that the problem is in the Windows Mobile and ActiveSync. Check that ActiveSync doesn't run in the background.

I found this on the Internet:
"to prevent Activesync from starting up periodically do the following: Open Activesync on your PPC Menu>Add Server Source... Type a bogus server address. Next fill in the fields with anything. Finish. Menu>Schedule... Sync during... [change both peak and off peak] to Manually. Ok. Really Close Activesync [not minimize] then start it up again. Menu> Options > Delete the BOGUS SERVER you made."

How do I know if my device is one of the 9%? Compared to the my Garmin 60CS i find the P550 far better, but if there is a flaw and it could be even better.... :-)

I am also thinking in the same way. Do they know which units (serial numbers e.g.) are "malfunctioning"? I think I'm going to contact Mio tomorrow to make this clear.

You can try asking them, but the my rule of thumb would be : if you're happy with it keep it.

The problem units like the one I tested struggle to get a fix even with a clear sky and have a hard time holding on to it. You would have noticed right away.

How do you calculate the average signal level? Over how long time, and where is the device being used? Is this "testing procedure" documented anywhere on this site? Thanks for your help. I would like to test my own device. I tried Winfast Navigator / CE Monitor yesterday, and I noticed 50 sek to get a fix from cold start. The HDOP was around 1.2 and most of the sats being used was 30-40 dB.

Today I got a fix after 27 seconds in Winfast Navigator, after a factory reset, so I guess I sholdn't complain about my unit's performance ;o)

Yes both of you seem to be all set, no need to go through the complex signal level calculations ;-)

Hi all,
I have had the p550 no sat fix problem, found Mitac support very helpfull apart from the expensive phone call, you would think if the problem is theirs that they would wave the phone costs!!!. First call they went through settings on the p550, then sugested I download the latest version of Tom Tom 5 this of course did not work.
Phoned again following day with ref No given on first phone call, I sugested that the unit may be one of the items at fault, they agreed and said they would send postage bag yesterday (Thurs 10th Aug), bag arrived this morning (Fri 11th Aug) cant complain at that. Will keep those interested on the progress and outcome.

OHH forgot to say the rest of the functions on this unit are brill the wi/fi on it picks up my home and work wi/fi networks and all the people in my street who have wireless PC's

I bought my p350 on ebay from x1387. Sorry for your loss, my sale went fine and he's the only good priced seller on ebay. He barely makes the units up at all.

Anyways, what if you call mitac and offer to pay the shipping charges?
