UPDATED BY GPSPASSION - 20060808

Updated 08/08 - After weeks of speculation between those who were enjoying their P550 and those who were struggling to get a fix due to abnormally low signal levels as shown in the June signal analysis, Mio have just announced on their site that about 9% of the P550 they shipped had such problems.

They are asking users to return them for repair and offering a warranty "catch up". One could have hoped that they would offer an immediate swap to make up for the frustration, but it's good to see that they have now identified the problem and that it can be fixed.

Updated 06/20 - Some new developments today, after a flurry of GPS reception problems reported by P550 users in the FRA forums, that were hard to understand given the stellar performance of the P350 I tested, I managed to get a hold of a P550 today and it is not a very pretty sight. The satellite signal that reaches the GPS chipset is extremely low (max of 29dB-Hz instead of the usual 40dB-Hz a "coated windshield" impact really), to the point where it's going to be difficult to do a cold start (4 hours without using a GPS) that requires downloading new Ephemeris data with a signal level of 28dB-Hz. Add in a coated windhshield and you probably won't be able to hold the fix.

Even the Qtek G100/iMate PDA-N that had a weak antenna performed significantly better. I'm at a loss as to why that is compared to the P350, possibly because they crammed in a BT and WiFi and module and cut down on the antenna or placed it differently.

On the road, the sceen is very bright

From all angles, the audio jack is a 2.5mm

This is unexpected, but the P350 looks like a clone of the Orange SPV M5000/i-Mate JasJar!

The Mio P350 was announced just before CeBIT 2006, at the same time as the P550 (P350 with Bluetooth and WiFI) and the new family of AIOs C210/510/710/H610. This is Mio's first GPS PDA with an internal antenna and I was curious to see whether it would offer better GPS performance than the Qtek G100 or Loox N520. My initial reservations about that format vanished with the Mio A701 and Eten G500 GPS PDAPhones that offered excellent performance, see details.

Original message : Has anyone got one yet? Would love to know how if it performs similar to the A701. Any chance of a review gpspassion if not already done so? :)

There are a few threads on the P550 on PDAFrance if anyone is nice enough to translate? Just want to get a general impression of peoples thoughts on GPS performance on this unit.

Thanks for the link gpspassion. I have tried to understand the thread as well as I can with google translation and it like you said it seems to have excellent performance. I know it says its still in test but do you have any figures yet as to how it compares to other receivers (ie. N560, A636, BT338, etc..)

Thank you kindly for the update gpspassion, greatly appreciated! After following the 14pages or so on the FRA forums it was becoming evident people were having issues with the P550....the search continues.....I guess I'll have to wait till your N560 test unit comes in gpspassion and hear about your results. If all else fails maybe the announced Asus A639 may bring some hope to an all in one pda?

Hi,
I have just bought a P550.
I am getting fantastic performance so far using memeory-map v4 and v5 both walking and in the car.
I was worried to see the report of poor GPS signal level but have experienced nothing bad so far. I get very quick fixes when switching on. Much quicker than either my Fortuna "Clip-on" BT Rx or a Globalsat BU-353 wired (both to HP3970 PC).
I have only one problem and that is getting TT Navigator v5.21 to open maps?
Has anybody got experience and tips, for P350 or P550 and installing TomTom Navigator?

NO NEED TO QUOTE A MESSAGE DIRECTLY ABOVE YOURS, SERVER SAYS THANKS ;-)
I found a version of TT5.21 on the internet that solved my problem. The exe file has been replaced and that one functions fine.
Send me an e-mail and can send it to you.

Oops.... Sorry.
Problem is I bought an official 5.21 version and had the same problem. As soon as I tried to open a map the PDA hanged himself before asking for the registration number. Only a reboot brought it back to life. TT didn't have a fix. The file found solved my problem. On the TT site there is still nothing on support for P550.

It is a bit weird though. A friend of mine bought the same P550. On his machine my original software worked, but his can't get a fix. So it seems that not all P550 respond the same. Both installations have been done from scratch (so no other software installed)

Did he run the MioMap software first ? Then it would have removed the GSV messages that TomTom needs, send a factory reset with CE Monitor and it should fix it - http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=6

I tried the resets with CE Monitor as suggested by gpspassion but this did not help.
I have since found that my TT5.0 works OK on this machine. All my "plus_Maps" load and run fine. I had to run the TTN CAB file with the PPC file explorer as the auto install did not completely work when inserting the card. I'm a bit mystified as I expected to need the TT5.21 upgrade on this Mio. However if it's not broke etc!
Incidentally running CE Monitor is giving me cold start FTTF's of arround 22s. So I definately don't seem to be having sensitivity problems on my P550.
