Added by GpspasSion : if the webupdater doesn't work for you, try freebird's method below
Some of you may have noticed that this topic was mentioned in another thread but I hope that more people will find out about it if it has its own thread.
Garmin seems to have slipped this one in on us. Did you know that there are a ton of new voices for the Nuvi available on the Garmin website? The major difference is that there are now male voices for most of the supported languages. A number of us have found that these male voices are easier to understand/speak more clearly than the female voices currently available (no offense).
Here's how you can download any of the new voices:
- the voices must be downloaded using Garmin's webupdater. If you do not already have it installed on your computer it is available at:
http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater
- attach your Nuvi to your PC.
- run the webupdater program once the PC recognizes the Nuvi.
- if you don't have the latest version of the Updater installed the first thing that will happen is that the Updater will want to update itself.
- if you have the latest version or after the update is completed the updater will state - "There may be further updates available for your device. Check for more updates."
- click Next to proceed.
- the software will confirm it is connecting to the Garmin server and then present a screen listing all the new voices available.
- put a check mark beside the ones you want and click Next.
- read and agree to the license agreement and click Next.
- the updater will then download and install the new voices. Be patient this could take awhile depending on how many voices you picked.
- when all selected voices have been installed the updater will present a confirmation screen to confirm successful installation.
- click Finish
That's it your Nuvi is now ready to start using the new voices.
Disconnect the Nuvi from your computer. Turn it on and select your new TTS voices using the Language option on the Settings screen.
If you would like to read more about these voices and what other users think about them see page 2 of the thread called "Changes for Nuvi 350" in this forum.
PLEASE NOTE - These procedures were written using a Nuvi that has Software Version 3.20 installed. If yours has an earlier version of the software the Webupdater may want to install or suggest you install 3.20 on your unit. I believe there are still outstanding issues around using Webupdater to install Unit Software upgrades. I have had 100% success manually downloading any Unit Software updates and installing them and would recommend you do the same until we are sure that the Webupdater is safe for this purpose. There does not appear to be an issue with using the Webupdater for other types of updates like these new voices.

I tried to look for the extra TTS voices but non showed using the webupdater. I was using the latest webupdater and on the Nuvi I have 3.2 software, 2.5 GPS, 1.3 Audio. The only updates it came up with were two for the GTM traffic stuff. I downloaded these and re-installed the firmware using updater but still no extra voices shown when the updater was re-run!!!!
I have a European 350 Nuvi only one day old. Are any of the new voices for Europe? Maybe the updater only shows new voices dependent on what region the Nuvi is for??

Boy, that is a step backward in terms of Mac compatibility.
I have done firmware upgrades using my Mac and they work fine. So now to get the new voices I have to borrow a PC. Not good.
What's even more frustrating is that the vpm files can be simply dragged into the Voice folder -- no clunky web updater software is needed.
Anybody want to email me one of the English male voices to test (the files run about 14 MB, so you need a fat pipe and a good ISP or the ability to FTP to my server)?

I've noticed some comments about their Audio versions being this or that number. It seems that Audio version is related to the voice you've selected. Try different voices and see if the Audio version changes with each one. It does on mine. For example, British Emily (TTS) is Audio version 1.2. AE Jill shows 1.5.
The observation being that a Nuvi unit doesn't seem to have just a default overall Audio version, but rather the version is related to who you have talking at the moment.

In fact the majority of the voices are for languages in Europe. They include Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian and Swedish.
Not sure why you can't see them using the Webupdater. Maybe your unit is so new that they are already on it. One of the new French voices is Sebastian. Have a look in the Language section of the settings menu and see if its there.

Dan, I have the Jack vpm (US English)file which I can attempt to mail to you but need your e-mail address. I can also FTP it to your server if you have the details needed to logon to it.
One other suggestion - why not e-mail Garmin and ask them if they have an FTP server you can access and download the vpm's directly. Most companies have this facility they just don't advertise it. |

| You folks that don't see any new voices may want to call or drop Garmin an e-mail. As long as my Nuvi is attached to the PC I get the list of all the voice updates everytime I run the Webupdater. The only ones that don't show up on the list are the ones I have already loaded on my Nuvi. I can't explain why some of you are seeing the new voices and others are not. Maybe Garmin can explain it. |

Maybe download and re-isntall the webupdater application itself.
I see the files when I use it, and I just installed it last week. Maybe Garmin updated it and only a "newer" version will see the voice files? |

At the risk of igniting flames [g], here's what Macworld had to say (tongue firmly in cheek) about the CNN story:
"OS X faces threats from a new Trojan horse and a Safari security hole. For those of you keeping score ... that's OS X: 2, Windows: 1,453,812."
Kidding aside, all OS's are vulnerable to various malware and mischief, but at work where I have to manage a variety of boxes, the Windows machines take up a disproportionate amount of my time.

With a huge tip of the hat to NanaimoRick, who supplied me with the "Jack" voice file, here's more good news for Mac users with nuvis.
If we can convince Garmin that updates like this should be available via simple download, then adding new voices is drag-and-drop easy. It can't hurt to point out that the Windows-only web updater appears not to work for all Windows users either.
To add a new voice, simply take the new file and drag it into the Voice folder inside the Garmin folder on your nuvi. It appears as a language in the nuvi menu once you disconnect your nuvi from the computer.
Note that each language has at least two files, meaning American English has a 1.1 MB file common to all its voices, then the voice files such as Jill and Jack (14-16 MB each). No need to replace the small common file; I assume you would only need to transfer that file if you are adding a new language with new voices associated with it.
So let's email Garmin and ask that all updates be made available for download independent of web updater, for the convenience of all nuvi users.

Hi all,
this is my first post on this forum and english is not my native language (so bear with my grammar ).
For those of you who have either a Mac or the Nuvi webupdater do not find any new TTS languages (as it was in my case), I've found another way to install or update the TTS languages.
Please be aware that the following procedure is not for the faint hearted and of course I will not take any responsibility for a destroyed Nuvi.
Now here's the procedure:
1.) Download the TTS language of your choice from the Garmin C340 website (here)
2.) Open the downloaded .exe file with WinZip and extract the .rgn file.
3.) Rename the .rgn file to .vpm.
4.) Open the .vpm file with a hex-editor (e.g. UltraEdit).
5.) Delete from the beginning of the file 60 bytes (leaving 16 bytes in front of the string "DSKIMG"). Save the changed file.
6.) Copy (or drag/drop) the changed .vpm file manually to the Nuvi (into the directory \Garmin\Voice). The name of the file is not important only the extension .vpm is.
7.) Delete (or save) the original TTS file.
8.) On the Nuvi change to the new language (settings->Language->Voice Language).
9.) To check, go to settings->System->About dialog and check the Audio Version. You should see the new version.

Freebird:
You, sir, are a genius!
Your English is a lot better than my Deutsch (which ist sehr schlecht) and your method worked perfectly for installing the "Daniel" British English TTS voice on my nuvi, using a Macintosh no less.
One small tweak: As long as you are using a hex editor, there's really no need to re-name the rgn file to vpm until you save it with the 60 bytes cut out.
Many thanks.

You're right, it doesn't matter if you rename the file before or after the change.
I'm glad to hear that it worked for you.

Not working on my test 300 unit here, in fact it's not seeing any of the TTS voices, I thought the 300/350 hardware was similar, maybe a FW limitation.
