I'm using a Cingular 2125 Smartphone running WM5--has anybody else have problems establishing a permanent bond with the bluetooth GPS device?
I can bond successfully to my bluetooth GPS device (AVL BT-15). However if I power off and on the receiver, the bond is lost and I have to delete the existing device in the WM5 Bluetooth settings and rebond before GPS will work.
I think it's a bug related to the WM5 OS because I have tried this on 3 different bluetooth GPS receivers now: - AVL BT-15 - ABG-108 - GPT-700 and the problem persists on all 3 devices.
I have also tried this on several different smartphones - Cingular 2125 running WM5 - Audiovox SMT5600 running WM5 - Audiovox SMT5600 running WM2003 Cingular ROM - Audiovox SMT5600 running WM2003 AT&T ROM
The only version that is able to keep a bond permanently is the Audiovox SMT5600 running AT&T ROM. I can get Mapopolis and GPS to work, but it's quite annoying having to delete the GPS device and rebond everytime I open up Mapopolis. With so many people out there, I'm figuring somebody is bound to have had the same problem as me. Can anyone help? |

| I have an i-mate SP5 running WM5 and I have to delete the existing device and then rebond too if I power off. It seems there isn't a way round it and we have to live with the hassle. |

I didn't know there was a WM 5 upgrade path for the SMT-5600. Hmm...
Looby, here are the general setup directions for WM 5:
*********************************************************** How to set W.M. 5 up for Bluetooth GPS use
1. Go to Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth 2. Make sure the box for Turn On Bluetooth is ON (checked) 3. Tap on Devices 4. Create a partnership with your Bluetooth receiver by tapping on "New Partnership…" to scan for and select your Bluetooth GPS receiver 5. Now you should be back at the Bluetooth Devices screen, and your newly partnered GPS receiver should appear in the list. Mine shows up as BT-GPS-019C69 6. Now tap on COM Ports 7. Tap on New Outgoing Port 8. You will be asked to select a device. Select your Bluetooth GPS receiver (as in our example, "BT-GPS-019C69," and then tap Next at the bottom of the screen 9. Now select a COM port. It can be any port. We used COM8 because we are used to that from another Pocket PC that we use. 10. If your GPS receiver requires a passkey, check the box for "Secure Connection" 11. Now tap on Finish and/or OK to close all windows back to the Today/Home screen 12. Start Mapopolis 13. Go to Tools > Settings > GPS Options 14. Select the COM port you specified in step 9 above, for example COM8 15. Leave the Baud rate set to auto-detect, or select 4800 baud which is used with most GPS receivers. 16. Tap OK to return to the Mapopolis map display 17. Go to Tools > GPS and tap on Start GPS. ************************************************************
I agree that would be a hassle. However, this news hasn't made it to Mapopolis tech support, so I wonder if you have something a little different in your setup.
Thanks,
Lamar

Lamar,
There is an illegal WM5 ROM for Audiovox SMT5600...works great, except for the permanent bonding part. The Cingular (WM2003) ROM has the same problem keeping a permanent bond. Only the AT&T (WM2003) ROM doesn't have this issue.
That's the same procedure I used to try and bond with all my GPS devices with no luck (it bonds but won't bond permanently except on AT&T ROM). It looks like a problem with WM5 and not Mapopolis. However there must be something Mapopolis can do to circumvent it. |

| Thanks Lamar, I have no problem with the setting up or bonding with the GPS unit nor with anything else with Mapopolis for that matter and the bonding does not stop if I exit the Mapopolis programme and re-enter it is when I switch off the bluetooth that I have to delete the pairing and then re-bond each time. As sound1992 suggests it is not a problem with Mapopolis anyway. I can live with this. Many thanks for all your hard work. |

Hey all, Just wanted to drop a line and let you know that I had this problem too on my T-mobile SDA. However, I found that if I power cycle the blutooth on my phone (comm manager, BT off, then BT back on) it connects without a problem. No re-pairing needed. I'm wondering if it has something to do with Windows Mobile not properly closing the last session. If my theory is correct, it might also work if you power cycle your phone in between uses (who turns off their phone at night nowadays, honestly?).

| My problem was never with restarting the phone or Bluetooth. It was always when I restarted the GPS unit that I had these problems. I would like to ideally just turn on my GPS receiver when I want to use Mapopolis. After all, most of us always keep our phone on but the same can't be said of the GPS receiver. |

That sounds like a real annoyance. I'm planning to get a Cingular 2125 and I'm considering getting the new iGuidance 3.0 and a bluetooth GPS of some kind, but that whole hassle of Bluetooth pairing and repairing and powering the bluetooth GPS on and off and separately charging the GPS receiver when the battery runs down sounds like it may not be worth the hassle. Too bad there is no wired GPS unit you can plug into a smartphone that doesn't need pairing or charging. |

| That program is only for PDA's. Unless I'm mistaken it doesn't work with Smartphones. |

Mapopolis - configuring for your Audiovox 5600
If you have previously bonded the GPS to the phone, please delete the GPS device from the phone before following these steps.
1. Open Start/Configurations/BTSerialPortSetup 2. Check both Incoming (COM6) and Outgoing (COM7) Com ports 3. Click Done 4. Bond with your GPS Device via the Bluetooth menu 5. Start Mapopolis and configure the GPS receiver for COM7 and Baud Rate of 4800 under Menu -> Settings -> GPS -> GPS Communications 6. Go to Menu -> GPS and select Start GPS – it should work.
If you get an error message stating that COM7 is not available, follow steps below:
1. Open Start/Configurations/BTSerialPortSetup 2. Uncheck COM7 3. Click Done 4. Reboot phone (Turn off and back on) 5. Open Start/Configurations/BTSerialPortSetup 6. Check COM7 again 7. Follow remaining steps above |

Hi, Trobador,
Please write to support@mapopolis.com for more information, but, no, purchased maps do not expire - they continue working after the download year is over.
