Here is a summary of the software I use for my C320. I hope it is useful for someone else. Some questions in the text which if answered could lead to a little guide we could post. Thanks
A) System software The system software is to be found at the following URL http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00401-00 I am using the webupdater version 2.3.2 which works very well to update the unit firmware (currently 5.10) and the voice file (curr. 2.40). I am not sure if the webudpater will update itself. If it does you will never need the URL for the system software. B) Map data I have a City Select Europe for C320 V7 which came with my unit.I am not sure of the best methos to know if/when there is an update for this and I do not understand if I will be entitled to a free upgrade or not. I do not understand how does MetroGuide Europe V8 compare to my City Select V7. C) Favorites management I am using Garmin MapSource 6.9.1 to import/export Waypoints/Favorites to/from my C320. The waypoints in the program only seem to be the Favorites and not the POIs. If true this is a pity. This program has a function to check for updates (currently 6.10.2.0) but I do not remember if later versions have less functions and therefore I should not upgrade. D) POIs (Points of Interest) management I use the Garmin POILoader program version to upload Garmin csv files to the unit in the My Locations->Custom POIs folder. I am not sure if reloading them will wipe them out first thus avoiding duplicates. I also use the wonderful POIEdit program to a) download and update the POIs I am interested in (from an Italian website poigps.com since I live in Italy. Of course you can add/customize POIedit with many others sites). This avoids manual downloading and unzipping of the POIs. b) Converting the Tom Tom .ov2 POI files to the Garmin .csv format that is used by POIloader.
The main drawback of what I used is the lack of a single (could be mapsource or poiedit) software which reads/writes to/from my C320 all of "My Locations" data (Favorites and Custom POIs).
Thank you for any feedback Bob |

A. Webupdater will offer to update itself, when updates are available.
B Metroguide does NOT support autorouting, you need to use City Select or City Navigator. If a newer version of the software was available when you unlocked your mapsource disks, you are entitled to a free upgrade, otherwise you pay. CN Europe V8 should be compatible.
C Mapsource only loads Favorites from your unit. there is no support for downloading custom POIs. POIloader supports .GPX files, which can be saved directly from Mapsource in the directory on your computerwhereyou keep the custom POIs. If you wish to move favorites to custom POIs - load using Mapsource, and save as GPX file, load back to unit using POIloader.
Mapsource 6.10.2does not have less functionality than 6.9.1 - check the Garmin download page for update changes log. The major loss of functionality was the separation of real-time tracking in 6.5 which is now handled by nRoute.
D. Each time you load your POIs the existing ones will be erased - hence they all need to be loade together, no problem with duplicates.
There is no program (of which I am aware) that will load the custom POIs back from the unit, they need to be stored on your computer. I would suggest having a dedicated directory, which has your current POIs, and adding and editing as required.
If editing a Garmin csv file, it is easiest to convert to .GPX and open in Mapsource (use POIEdit v3.8 or later, or GPXtoPOI) see POI thread elsewhere on these forums |
