Latest..."Crystal"
  • Mapopolis Navigator 4.6 compatible
  • female voice file ('MapopolisWordsEN') for Mapopolis: PPC/SmartPhone
  • 50 English words/phrases
  • enhanced volume

Latest version: [as of 03-12-05]

For 4.6: Crystal_50a.mvf.zip = original Mapopolis prompts (by Crystal)

Of course, more variations to come...

Installation: Unzip the file. The extracted filename is 'MapopolisWordsEN.mvf'. Replace the current version of ‘MapopolisWordsEN.mvf’ on your device with this version. Select 'US Female' in Mapopolis to hear Crystal.

TTS VERBOSITY users: These custom language files support Crystal directly without replacing the offical US Female voice in Mapopolis, using the filename 'Crystal_50.mvf'. Copy the custom language files to the Mapopolis program folder on your device. This will give you several, additional, English language options in Mapopolis: 'Settings > Program Options > Language'. Simply drop this extracted file anywhere on your device and "refresh" the voices in Mapopolis using 'Settings > Sounds > Refresh'. Then select "Crystal" from the drop-down menu of voice selections as available in 'Settings > Sounds'. This direct support for Crystal using the drop-down menu in this manner is only available when using one of these customized language files. The 'English vebose' language file is virtually identical to the official Mapopolis 'English' language file.

For beta 4.50.39 or older : Crystal_50a.pdb.zip = original Mapopolis prompts (by Crystal)

Previous…"Crystal"
  • these '.pdb' files require Mapopolis 4.29 thru 4.33 (link)

  • female voice file ('MapopolisWords.pdb') for Mapopolis: PPC and Palm
  • 45 English words/phrases
  • normalized volume
  • 'WAV' audio format

Latest version with variations: [as of 12-02-03]
Crystal 3a [site: 1 2] [preview: mp3] = original Mapopolis prompts (by Crystal)
Crystal 3b [site: 1 2] [preview: mp3] = 'a' plus: “on” & “take” now “on the” & “take the”
Crystal 3c [site: 1 2] [preview: mp3] = ‘b’ plus: eliminates “ahead” prompt
Crystal 4d [site: 1 2] [preview: mp3] = ‘c’ plus: “tenths” now “tenths of a” (for the long-winded folks!)
Crystal 4e [site: 1 2] [preview: mp3] = ‘d’ plus: “wrong direction” now “um…where are you going?”

Also meet "Mike" (...and others)

Installation notes: Replace the current 'MapopolisWords.pdb' file in your Mapopolis folder with this version. Your choice: rename your current voice file to serve as an in-place backup, or overwrite it with the newer version. Either way, backup the original...at least until you're comfortable with the new voice performance:

Simply renaming the current 'MapopolisWords.pdb' to 'MapopolisWords0.pdb' should do the trick. However, these voice files are relatively large (over 600 KB), so a permanent, in-place backup may be stealing precious 'program/internal' memory.

The MP3 audio files are offered as a quick way to preview the respective .pdb files, but, like the associated text files, they serve no function in Mapopolis.

Just add this 'MapopolisWords.pdb' file to your Mapopolis folder and it will then take precedence over the older 'mapwords.bin' file (do not rename the new .pdb file).

Tech notes:
'WAV' format = 22kHz 8-bit mono PCM. The reduction from 16-bit to 8-bit PCM ('WAV') for TalkEdit cuts the file size in half, but introduces noise (background hiss and some voice distortion).
The resulting .pdb (‘WAV’) file is about 640 KB in size.
Tools used for this project include: TalkEdit; AT&T Natural Voices Text-to-Speech Engine; TotalRecorder (demo records up to 40” clips; MP3 support requires free LAME codec); Creative WaveStudio (not required but handy waveform editor; free with Sound Blaster audio card); total software cost $0 (time: priceless!)

guysullivan,

Well, I could always make her louder, but some folks were saying she sounded 'overdriven' in my original versions (v1 & v2 had 130% volume normalization). Perhaps it's not possible to have a voice file with full-dynamic range (no frequency filtering) while also driven past 100% volume normalization. The 8-bit PCM (versus 16-bit) doesn't help, but I'm not complaining -- just hoping for MP3 (LAME codec) or even Ogg Vorbis support someday -- both of which can be hosted/coded license free as I understand it (hint, hint ).

Sweet! I look forward to trying these out. Now we just need a utility to search the directory for pdb files and let us pick the file we want to use. :D

Hey wizeguy,
Just wanted to thank you -- I've been using the "Audrey" prompts for months! Of course, I must thank Tony Trus, JBird, the Mapopolis team, and others who have contributed voice files, tips and suggestions (Lutz, guysullivan, jgoggan, chilimost, Gary B., arebelspy, todd3835, themax,...) over the past few months throughout these "voice editor" threads. You folks really blazed the trail for those of us who now follow in your footsteps !

Where exactly are you guys getting all these voices? You have friends that are bored enough to talk into the mic for ya? Just curious.

"c’ plus: also eliminates “next” prompt"

Did you replace it with another prompt or eliminate it all together. I find it very handy in cities with streets close together. It notifies you when the street you are required to turn on is the next street you come to. Is that not what the purpose of using the comand "next" was created for?

Well, version '3d' (and beyond) have only silence in the 'next' prompt slot. You know, I didn't know that 'next' came up only when the turn is the next street you come to. Yes, that would be quite useful! I thought it was simply redundant like 'ahead.' I'll add it back to the latter versions and eliminate the current 'd' version.
This will just take a minute...

Hey, does this imply that 'ahead' is there to notify us only when there are intermediate roads/exits between you and your next turn? That could actually be useful, perhaps with a more explicit prompt.

Done.

For even more language (including Mandarin Chinese!) check out: http://www.scansoft.com/realspeak/demo/

Our company work with them in one of our products where you can listen to your emails, and the voices are very good!

Not sure that's how he application works. Lamar, could you ask your chief developers under what circumstances "Next" and "Ahead" are used?
