Sorry, when I said "soft reset and re-insert" above I actually typo'ed and meant "soft reset OR re-insert."
So, yes, a re-insert works as a temporary workaround.
I did go and confirm that it happens in other GPS-reading apps -- it certainly isn't a Mapopolis thing, you are correct. Over at AximSite, at least one person says that Dell said that it was a known issue and should be fixed in the next release (current is A06 for the X51v that I have) -- we'll see if that comes to pass or not...

| Thanks, it's good to know that Dell is aware of the problem and planning to fix it. Also good to know that it is definitely NOT a Mapopolis problem. |

| This started out for me and has become somewhat of a nightmare with my new axim51vwm5 unit.I was out of the gps thing for a while and decided to upgrade from a dell5 to a 51v about a month ago.Well i wanted a cf gps just like i used before with my 5.I picked up a 305III hiacom sent it back did the eserialdll driver fix and i got it to get a satellite fix but i didnt try with Mapopilis.I wanted a plug and play cf gps so i went for the globalstat337 and it gets a fix quickly and sees many satellites.NOW i go to my map program Mapopilis and i am indeed finding the trouble that all of you have been reporting.I just do the reinsertion of the cf gps card and turn it back on.However i am hearing from others that use Iguidance that they do not have this problem. It may be Dells fault but it looks like the na. software |

Actually, I was just going to post here about the elserial.dll driver replacement from Elan. If I use that (with my Pharos CF GPS units), it actually works fine! I can start and stop all day long! The problem is that this requires a registry change that is getting reset by WM5 at each soft reset! So, it is just a temporary "fix." I'm working on why it is getting reset and if I can make it permanent.
marksj -- have you tried using the elserial.dll replacement driver with your GlobalStat337? It definitely fixed the problem for me -- in Mapopolis and everywhere else. My only problem now is making it a permanent replacement...

Ok -- this is now working perfectly for me. No problems! Once I got it to "stick" in the registry so that it always loads the elserial.dll file for the CF GPS, everything works great in all programs -- and I can start and stop all I want.
Obviously, there is some problem with the default serial.dll file being used -- it conflicts with the Axims in some way when a CF GPS is used. Using the elserial.dll, all is well!
Just wanted to note it.

Apparently, if you use the button on the back of the device to soft-reset it too quickly, registry changes aren't permanent. It's a weird thing where the device must only move registry changes to permanent storage at some interval instead of "all the time." This can make some sense since there might be lots of registry changes going on all the time for some apps -- so continually saving them might not make sense.
In any case, I simply found that if you make the change and then leave it for a while (I just left it for a few hours and didn't worry about it), then it "sticks." Or, you can do a software-based soft reset instead -- which seems to force the OS to save the registry first. I've needed a good software-based reset anyhow, so I'm now using the free "psShutXP" (from http://ppcsoft.narod.ru/english/ ) to do my resets.
Seems to be working fine.
Note that this is basically a new serial driver written by a company for their CF GPS product -- to work around the problem with the default serial.dll file on the Axim with WM5. It may or may not work with your CF GPS -- but it seems to work with most. I have not been able to find it yet as a free download at any official site -- so the licensing is also in question (since I don't own their CF GPS).

Yes, it works great on WM5 -- no problem. I picked the "XScale WM2003SE - VGA display" one because my X51v is VGA.
