It seems MS MapPoint 2006 should be finally available in a few weeks. ETA is the end of March or early April. It remains to be seen if this newest version incorporates some or all of the GPS related features which were added to MS Streets & Trips and MS AutoRoute over the last two years, or if this is going to be just update of data.

"The Magazine for MapPoint" www.mp2kmag.com is already accepting pre-orders at https://secure.mp2kmag.com/ There are going to be again two versions, one for North America and one for Europe. Eric sells them for $289 each, and he even adds some goodies: each order includes a free copy of the Routing and Programming Tools spreadsheet including working tools and lots of sample code ($95 value). (I just quickly checked Amazon.com price: $299.00)

It appears there is going to be a version of Microsoft MapPoint 2006 with a GPS receiver. Some on-line stores already advertise it with the price of about $40 more than the software-only package (pre-order price).

(Amazon.com today for some reason offers MS MapPoint 2006 even in its "Health & Personal Care" section ;-)

SpatialPoint at its order page http://www.spatialpoint.com/mappoint-purchase.asp claims that the upcoming MP 06 will include NavTeq map data version Q3 2005. If that is really the case that would be something to look forward too. Streets & Trips 2006, which was released only a few short months ago is based on much older NavTeq map version from 2004 (I don't know which quarter of 2004). I checked Microsoft's on-line service www.mapblast.com but I still see (C)2004 Navteq on the bottom of the map. But let us be hopeful. If the maps will indeed be based on Q3 2005 data it would be a specially good news for the European version of MapPoint 2006 because it would mean that very likely several "new" countries would (re)appear in the product. Q3 2005 should expand the MapPoint Europe coverage to the following regions: Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania. Coverage would be limited, but it would be a great start. Q3 2005 NavTeq map data could expand the North American version of MapPoint as well. We could see street level map coverage of U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas. We could see map of Mexico even better than what we see now in Streets & Trips 2006. But that is all just my speculation based on the best case scenario ;-)

But if MP 2006 implements all the features S&T 2006 now has (and it very likely will), S&T will have nothing MP doesn't have. So there would be no real reason to try to update S&T map data with newer MP maps. Use MP instead. And you will gain the one feature S&T doesn't have, which is the ability of MP to be controlled programmatically. Chances are someone may come up with some software add-on for MP which may improve its functionality as a GPS navigation tool. Hmm, automatic route recalculation feature comes to mind now ;-)

I just came across this image at the website of Future Shop here in Canada. They seem to be the first ones to already have a nice size screenshot of the box ;-) Price: CDN$469

According to this notes
http://blogs.msdn.com/mappoint_b2b/archive/2006/03/06/544277.aspx
We will not have it. Even nothing fancy compare with S&T 2006.
Yes, a lot of European maps, night screen mode and gps panel like in S&T 2006. I din't find mentions about map rotation. Hope this option is included. I am really disapointed, 2 years of development with so small inprovements...

You might have missed the following: "all of the driver guidance you see in S&T 2006 is now in MP 2006". To me that would most likely mean that all GPS related functions that we now have in S&T 06 are also built into MP 06 (including map rotation, etc).

i'm a member of MSDN, so far mappoint 2006 isn't in the list of software... i'll probably download it very soon after it's available though and maybe i can do a mini review of what features are actually there and which aren't

Excellent, thanks. It may still be a while, though. I now see some on-line stores pushing the ETA further a bit. Now it appears April / May time frame may be more realistic.

That yellow box shot seems implausible like not professional, maybe I should keep my mouth shut as I don't want to offend anyone :-)

By the way Marvin, did you make that MapPoint 2006 graphic at the top or where did you get it?

Hi Eric,

Yes, let's hope the look of the box will change between now and the release date ;-)

The green banner on the top of this page is a modified version of what I have found inside MSM10USA.dll in MapPoint 2004. I just covered the 2004 number and added 2006 instead ;-)

Wow, that's really sharp, I can't tell that it was edited at all.

I confirmed with MS that yellow box shot is the real one, I think they are already being manufactered so no time to change.

It looks really good now that I look at it :-)
