Mine has been in use now for about two weeks. For automotive use GPS reception could be described as adequate. On average it is probably using about 5 satellites. Startup time (cold start) outside the vehicle is about 3 minutes. Inside the (same) moving vehicle this can be anything from 4 to 20 minutes. Pedestrian use in town (recently tested in the financial district of London with many highrise buildings) is next to impossible. Even in the middle of a park in front of St Paul's cathedral getting a fix took ages. I must have been a bizarre sight holding a PDA up in the air.
A picture of the internals of the PDA can be seen on the FCC website:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/cf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=746176&fcc_id='NM8GL'
Looking at the pictures I wonder where the GPS antenna is. Have the designers just left it out, believing that the chipset will be able to do it's job without a proper antenna?
Does anyone know what format the antenna connector on the back of the i-mate has? To me it appears to look very much like the connector on my old Emtac Bluetooth GPS.

Welcome to the forums. Yes, GPS performance is really poor if you don't use it out in the open. Did you see my test results here http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=175 ? Nice find on the FCC website, I had half a mind to pull mine apart but couldn't find any obvious place to start. I think the antenna can be seen on pages 17 and 18, a so-called PIFA antenna I've been told since, seeing it does serve as a good indication of the problems the GPS faces. Regardlesd of the processing power, you still need to download the ephemeris data every 4 hours and you need a signal level of 28dB-Hz+ and it barely makes it most of the time. You can monitor that level with CE Monitor by the way, linked from here http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25575 Bad news doesn't end there as the antenna uses an odd connector I've never seen on a GPS before, so the only option really would be to use a reradiating antenna - http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/news.asp?id=652

However, I appear to have a problem with the sd card slot, which sometimes does not recognise the card when the device is powered back on after a duration.
If I am trying to run a program that requires something off the card (my gps program, for example), the device does appear to hang, obviously because it cannot find what it is looking for.
Next time you have a problem, you might try reseating your sd card, or try having a look in flie explorer to see if you can run things off the card.
I'd be interested to know if you also have the card related trouble. I've contacted Pharos tech support, am waiting to see if they have a response.

Dan i have the same problem with my Qtek G100. What happens now, what was the answer from the support? |

I 'wake up' the memory card by accessing a directory on the card via File Explorer (I use the desktop plugin of Resco Explorer). This usually (but not always) prevents the PDA from hanging.
A similar solution appears to work for GPS acquisition problems. VisualGPSce (for whatever reason) seems to be a lot better at acquiring a satellite fix than for example TomTom or the aviation mapping software application (Anywheremap) that I use on the IMate. Usually I first get a fix with VisualGPSce and then switch to TomTom or Anywheremap for navigation.
Apart from these two quirks (which could probably be fixed with a Firmware update ...... are you listening IMate?) I really like the PDA-N. |

Hi there!
I am having the same bad reception problems with the integrated gps. VisualGPSce usually reports that 9-12 sattelites are in view, but i cannot get a fix. The firmware i have is the latest i think ( .10) I have also noticed the problem with the SD card. Usually the pda reports sometimes that it cannot write on the SD card. The solution is to get the card out and insert it again. This is a common problem with many Qtek devices, and i have no idea why they have not solved it yet. What have you done with your g100 and the bad gps support? I am thinking of returning the device and ask for a refund, this is completely unacceptable for a device that is intended for gps navigation. |

| This is bad news :( Thanks for the assistance. Does anybody know if the SirfInstantfix can be implemented with a firmware update or something? |

Good question, most likely yes as Eten just did it for the G500, but HTC/Qtek would have to make that available, and they don't reply to my emails, so your guess is as good as mine ;-)

| Hope this thread is not dead. gpspassion hope you will update the thread as long as any news come to you regarding the G100. I will do the same thing of course. As for my G100, the bug that prevents the device from writing to the SD and having to re insert the card seems to be more annoying than the low GPS signal. Hope something is done soon. |

I'm not very optimistic, HTC don't seem to be very serious about this PDA, in fact it didn't find any takers in Europe...

Hi, not sure if you have read the other thread or not - I sent my unit back to Pharos, who reflashed it with the latest ROM (1.0.9 as I recall), which completely fixed the incredibly annoying memory card issue. If I was you, I'd get in touch with Qtek - that ROM flash is out there.
I have now sold my unit - I didn't like the screen size (too small) and car mounting was a pain compared to my Ique. I never did have any trouble with GPS reception, however, although here in Florida there is generally a lot of wide open sky so I'm probably not best placed to comment on that one.
Ique 3600 / Ique 3200. |

Hey there,
i have a newer flash version 1.0.10 so i guess maybe the problem is in the hardware for me. Anyway thanks for the advice, i have contacted already Qtek, but their service here in Greece seems to be horrible. They dont even reply to my emails. Hope i'll find my way somehow. |

I also hae rom 1.00.10ENG (12/21/05) Cemonitor is able to get a fix upto 4 sattelites (in my office...1 window)... But I also see it loose it's fix regularly (development screen shows *1E errors?) GPStweak also mentions NMEA errors and it has to reinitialise the NMEA link so it seams (get all firmware , speed & co)...
these programs all connect at 9600 baud? lthoug i select 4800?
initial problem : tomtom 5.21 reports "bad gps signal"... it used to work... but now after 20 minutes...after driving the whole country.... after a few cold resets... still no good signal? while Cemonitor got a signal after 30secs?
Where can I read that signal level exactly? is it SV,Az,El,CN? CN is 16,33,17,18 of the 4 sattelites found
