GPS Redirect is an application for HP IPAQ 6515 that lets you use the GPS built into the IPAQ from an external device over bluetooth. This is useful if you want to run a PC based GPS application on your Notebook PC and use the 6515 as a Bluetooth GPS device.
This is a pre release version. Feel free to email me your feedback/suggestions/feature requests etc. at nikhil@kapurs.net.
Version 0.2 Now includes support for the new GPS firmware for the 6500. More information is in the readme.
Version 0.3 now posted: >> Download here <<
GPS_Redirect Version 0.2 (Jan 10, 2006) by Nikhil Kapur (nikhil@kapurs.net)
Introduction ============
GPS Redirect is an application for HP IPAQ 6515 that lets you use the GPS built into the IPAQ from an external device over bluetooth. This is useful if you want to run a PC based GPS application on your Notebook PC and use the 6515 as a Bluetooth GPS device.
Requirements ============ The application is written in VB and uses Microsoft .NET Compact framework v2.0 . You need to install the Compact framework available from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9655156B-356B-4A2C-857C-E62F50AE9A55&displaylang=en
Usage ===== 1. Make sure you install the .NET Compact Framework from the above link. 2. Copy the GPS_Redirect.exe file to the IPAQ and run it. 3. Ensure Bluetooth is on and Connect Bluetooth Serial port from PC to IPAQ. (Note: Depending on your bluetooth stack this step may happen automatically when you run step 4.) 4. Start GPS application on PC and make sure it uses the Bluetooth serial port above. (The app will show messages on the IPAQ saying its connected etc.) 5. Enjoy!
Notes ===== You can keep the app always running in the background. When it detects that the Bluetooth port is opened, it will start the GPS and start sending data. When the Bluetooth port is closed, it stops the GPS (i.e. battery is not wasted when GPS is not being used by the PC).
A caveat here is that is you stop Bluetooth on the device, the app will terminate. THis is due to a acknowledged design flaw by Microsoft which prevents me from handling the exception and prevent termination. You can of course immediately restart the app.
Version History =============== V0.1 Jan 1, 2006 Initial Version V0.2 Jan 10, 2006 Support for new GPS firmware update Reads data from GPS in bulk for improved performance Code Cleanup" |

Thanks for posting here, I linked from the front page.
Works great on mine, by the way I installed the Compact Framework on my mini-SD card to save on RAM and it works fine.

Thanks for the Edits and Link. I have been using the new version for the last couple of days and its working very well.
Users of MS Streets and Trips might have to setup the bluetooth serial link manually before starting GPS in Streets and Trips - otherwise Streets and Trips gives up on the GPS too soon.
In the next version I am thinking of adding the ability to specify COM ports to use. That way you could use something like gpsgate to send the GPS data to the PC *and* to a GPS application running on the 6515. e.g. You PC/Laptop does the main navigation while the 6515 runs something like GPS Speed Sentry to monitor your speed. |

6515 GPS redirect to another device incl. PC has already been described with GPSproxy (also Sourceforge) on the Malsingmaps.com PDA_talk forum. With GPSproxy, you can use garmin format or other maps (garmin protocol and NMEA).

Hi there!
Very interesting program!!
But I have some questions
1) Can you please post or send to me your source code so i can understand how you did it?
2) Does your program work for other devices than ipaq?
3) Can we do this the other way? I mean can you redirect the data acquired by a laptop's PCMCIA Gps to a pocketPc through bluetooth?
Thanks in advance |

Can't get this to work using the default Windows XP Bluetooth Stack (though I'm guessing it works with the Widcomm one or something)
Can anyone confirm this? |

This could be true. I developed and used this on 2 different machines but they both have Widcomm. I had one other person for whom this wasn't working and he wasn't using Widcomm. I'll try to setup a PC with a default XP bluetooth stack and try to figure out whats going on.

One advantage of using GPS_Redirect is that it detects connection over Bluetooth and starts up the GPS only when connected. GPS is shut down when bluetooth connection is terminated thus saving battery life. With GPS running the battery wont last more than a few hours. I usually keep GPS_Redirect running all the time in the background. |

Here is the problem. I am trying to run tomtom 5.21 on an HTC wizard using the ipaq and this nifty little program as the gps unit. However, I am lost as to the settings. Right now, with some playing around, the program keeps looping in this loop...
Bluetooth port connected! GPS Port opened. Sending data... Bluetooth port not connected, waiting... GPS Port closed, waiting... Bluetooth port connected!
Any ideas?? |

From cjasus730's direct email I think he's trying to use the 6515 as the GPS unit and the HTC wizard as the Tom-Tom display device. Is that correct? Is there a reason you cant run Tom-Tom on the 6515 itself?
This is an interesting scenario though and might help me figure out why GPS_redirect has problems with non-widcomm bluetooth stacks on PCs.

For folks who have trouble using this software, try upgrading the GPS firmware to 1.27 or 1.28. I recently had my 6515 wiped out. When I brought everything up again, GPS_Redirect wouldn't work: It would say sending data but nothing was seen on the PC end. I had firmware 1.21 on it. I just upgraded to GPS firmware 1.28 and it works beautifully.
So its probably not a non-widcomm bluetooth stack issue. Getting some more data points from other users would be helpful.
Thanks, - Nikhil |
