I took out the battery for 6 days, this has succeeded to force hard reset and the receiver is working fine now. I am glad that I didn't force it open to do the short circuiting.

I advise anybody in a similar situation to be patient and wait for a hard reset to take place after removal of the battery, this could take up to 6 days.

Good to know, thanks for posting back to let us know. I suppose some covers fit a lot tighter than others, mine popped off with minimal prying so possible damage to the unit wasn't a concern. Starting near the mini USB plug (and nearest corners) with a thin screwdriver seemed to be the key to a clean removal. As mentioned before though, take care that the little black switch doesn't run away from you, it would be a booger to find once it hit dark carpet. ;)
Next time I might try the refrigerator trick first, I believe it shortened the wait time to hours instead of days.

Another GPSlim236 saved. I just worked real slow with getting the case off, starting with the USB end. worked just fine. Don't put the case back on until you confirm it works. It took 3 or 4 times - I think the issue is getting a good connection between the two contacts.
Thank You.

Great thread- glad I found it. I thought my gpslim was dead. I took the battery out and put the unit in the fridge for about 10 hours today and its back functioning great.

For anyone on the fence its always worked well for me, until for some reason it just stopped. now that its reset its back to navigating!

Thanks for this thread, and thanks to google!!

There is another common problem with the 236. If your GPSlim236 has trouble to start or maintain a Bluetooth connection (Blue LED permanently OFF) then the following might help:

Open the case as described and press down the area indicated in the following picture, while you turn on the device. You might need to keep it pressed for a longer time if the blue light goes off again instead of blinking.
JayW has come up with this effective solution, which is however only a temorary remedy. He further suggests that soldering some PCB connections on the mainboard will permanently fix the problem.
There have also been suggestions that putting the unit into a refrigerator or near the aircondition can temporarily get the Bluetooth to life, however resoldering seems to be the first solution that would permanently fix the problem.

Remember that any surgery you perform on the 236 will most likely void your warranty. So if you still have warranty I would recommend to return the device and describe the erratic error. Make sure the 236 is tested over a longer time if they cannot immediately reproduce the problem, as some users stated they have been returned their defective unit as "functioning" since it would work flawlessly when tested by the seller.

Have a look at this thread for more information:

I had to register to say - THANK YOU!

After fiddling around trying to get SBAS working with my GPSlim 236 I clicked the dreaded 'Synchronize Protocol & Baud Rate' option and killed my week-old rather expensive toy.

Thanks to your guide it's now back up and running!

Thanks again - I don't think I could have afforded to replace it for quite a while...

Hello there,
...I was an happy holux 236 owner when I decided to kill the unit by performing a firmware update (using the USB-SERIAL cable).
The procedure contained into the Holux.uk pdf was followed step by step: I did the flash with version "V5" of the firmware (found on the Holux.uk site). The process ended with the "target not responding" message quite soon (no progres bar).
Now on, each time I try to start the 236, I only got the BT blue led blinking; no way to obtain the orange led to even stay solid... It is permanently off. No way to have a fix.
All the attempts to reset the unit by all the suggested methods (eg. short the internal button battery etc.) failed.
What I have understood is basically the following:

1) if the update process is not easy, give it up and live with the bugs: sometimes a defective unit is better than a dead one
2) the holux 236 is basically two devices: a BT interface and a GPS antenna. If you damage one of the two, the second one may work but I don't know how to bring one or the other back to life after a wrong bios flash.

Now, I would like to know if there is someone who knows what to do...
Do you think that I have to throw the unit away?

Many thanks for your time.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, cpqkgpsa !!!!

I just did your reset trick and my Holux is back in business. I did however have to do it a couple of times as I didn't short it long enough.

All I did in SirfDemo was change to Sirf mode, then I couldn't do anything else, even a factory reset from the program.

I was almost ready to buy a new GPS until I found this thread.

And I just registered so I could send my appreciation :)

Many Thanks!! My brand new 236B (mini version of 236) is now sitting sans battery, trying to get a reset. Trying to open the case is not yet an option, but if someone has gotten a 236'B' open, please state the procedure.

My only error was trying the SIRF setup in Memory-Map Pocket Navigator after a quick and easy setup for NMEA. MM shouldn't cause this, and Holux, or SIRF shouldn't be so sensitive to a mode switch.

I went ahead and ordered the data cable for future problems, but that shouldn't be necessary either.

Memory-Map Tech Support pointed me to this topic, so they are apparently aware of the problem. The E-bay supplier said to send it back if the problem persists.

Good evening

I bought a GPS236 from gpsforless and BT gave up in 3 weeks. I sent it back and they told me 'as Holux UK have closed down they will have to send the unit back to Taiwan', GREAT that won't take long then will it.

I've sent E-Mails to 'info@holux.com.tw', 'wencheng_chung@holux.com.tw' and 'cp_cheng@holux.com.tw' asking for their opinion and guess what ... no reply!

Does anyone else know if Holux UK has really gone down the tube ?

I quite liked the 236 and hope that a replacement comes soon as I don't think there is much to replace it currently.

Thanks for listening.

GPS4Evyone replaced the GPS, new sn: 236B-63400437. The old one (sn: *311) finally reset after a week, but quit again on it's own.

The first cable they sent wouldn't install, so they replaced it also. New one works fine.

A pleasant surprise is that both the cable and Bluetooth function at the same time, and send data to the PC and PDA at the same time using 38400baud on both. Nice!!

Bad note is I can't use MS&T 2004 or Trip Maker Deluxe with it. Can't get the required 4800b or 9600b. Not a biggie, since I mainly use the GPS for flying.

Not a biggie. To solve the MS Streets & Trips problem, read S&T Tips & Tricks, tip # 28 titled 'Solution for GPS receivers not supporting 4,800 baud rate'. Follow the link »

Dave B,

I'm in a similar situation of returning a 236B for exchange to GPS4Evyone. They want me to only send the unit, no box, no accessories.

Assuming they gave you the same instructions, how did you package the unit for safe transport?

Thanks...

I have a GPSlim 236 and its super compared to the Tomtom mk1.
I have no real problems (to date) BUT have one question that I hope you can help me with;
Its sbout charging, I'd expect that I would be possible to use it whilst charging it in the car but tried this y-day only to find that it turned itself off. ie leaving it ON and inserting the charger made the display go completely blank. switching it on after removing the lead does not work at all. I eventually worked out that the only way to get it going is to: leave it OFF, insert the lead again at which point I get the green charge LED, then remove the lead and switch it ON - weird !!! One reason for buying this unit was that in a review it was mentioned that it would run permanently wired into the car ie leave it ON and it will be ready at all times, great idea but nothing in the manual re this so I emailed Taiwan weeks ago (no reply...). Contrary to the article this appears to be a no-no, still surely one should be able to run the GPS whilst charging. Yes I know that it has a 10hr batt.life and no-one will drive for that long, my point is that sometimes power might be too low at the start of the journey without one knowing hence one might need to top it up during a journey. As it is I might end up in a layby for an hour or so or revert back to the paper maps..
Any ideas ??

( Use a Ipaq rx3715 + TTN5 )

Best regards
Peter
