I remember I needed 3 attempts to reset my receiver. Each time I shorted it a little longer. There is no way to tell if it has reset execpt by trying it or if you have the data cable you can check the values with SIRFDemo I think.

I had to reset mine as I was messing around with an app on my K-Jam which switch the receiver to SIRF mode (used for walking) and when trying to switch it back it seemed to corrupt my receiver.

If yours was working fine before (and you haven't messed around with it) then it's possible that your receiver is faulty.

Does your receiver lock to the satellites, i.e. the LED blinks?

If you haven't already done so, you can also try posting in the Holux Forum on Pocket GPS (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=34)
The UK Holux tech support people read that forum and respond occasionally.

Cyberdude, I have found your post on Pocketgpsworld. Good to hear that your problem was fixed.
your question, Does your receiver lock to the satellites, i.e. the LED blinks?
Yes, it does. Red LED keeps blinking fine but no satellite, Lat/Long, Pdop or any info were shown on GPS application. I decide to discharge internal battery by leave out external Battery for 1 week, not sure it will work or not but it may a last method that I can do. I wonder why it worked well last month and then faulty without any reasons. I am sure I did not modify, change setting, accident falling or make any difference from the previous usage. Very strange!
I will post this problem on that forum as you advice and wait for the solution.
would you please leave your email address to me at komsan888@gmail.com ?
Thank you again

I just received my 236 today and fiddled around in SiRFDemo. Of course I ended up with the same problem you had, and moped for a while. Then I found your excellent post and was up and running again in minutes!

Thanks, Chris!

Chris you are the best!

I too played around with the infamous SirfDemo software and lost connectivity permanently with my 236!

After leaving it on without the main battery for 2 nights I was all bummed out, but after finding your post and doing the quick shortcircuit it came back alive!

Thank you!!!

After having used the famous by now "Synchronize Protocol & Baud Rate" I was just about to throw the Gpslim236 out of the window, when I stumbled upon Chris' posting.
Thanks Chris you just saved me a unit.

Hello all,

Of course I played with sirfdemo and of course I screwed up the unit...

But I have the data cable so is there a way to make it come back "from the dead" with the cable ?

Thanks a lot

I also got a 236 a few days ago and did not play with the demo ;-). The reception is phenomenal, just about 5 bars every where, but all is not rosy. Connected with the data cable to the laptop and GPSGate it works flawless, the problem is BT.
It took longer and longer for it to come on, I had to use the on/off switch multiple times for BT to come on and now the blue light just stays on, no blinking, no connection.
Has someone seen this before?

I also have a 1 week old 236 with a similar problem. Was working fine but now the bluetooth connection seems to be haywire. I either get no blue light, a constant blue light or the correct function.

I tried the reset thing earlier today, but didn't seem to fix the problem. In the past few minutes, I found that rapidly switching it off and on again seems to correct the problem after a few attampts.

My serial number is: 236-611XXXXX

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Ro

I can't check my serial number, it's all packed up. I got an RMA.
I guess you should do the same.

Just mailed mine back to the suplier yesterday!

I figured out that it was a hardware problem anyhow, because tapping the case, or gently squeezing it near the LEDs would sometimes correct the problem.

I'm getting a refund from my eBay seller and buying a new one from Nav4all.com.

Chris you are a star !!!!
Had completely borked my 236 and was trying the 'battery run down' method when I came across your post. Took about 3 secs of shorting for mine.
I will now add another warning. DONT use the Memory Map Sirf utility, guess what happens :)

Thanks for the reset tip. I just got my Holux 236 yesterday and using it with my ipaq 4150 it was working fine last night. I then left it on charge overnight, then for some reason it wasn't finding a fix from the satellites after several attempts of rebooting, etc. It saw the sats and was connected via bluetooth but never locked in to any of them for hours.
After doing the manual reset you described by taking apart the unit (only took less than 30 seconds to do the whole thing) it then locked in and found a fix and all is back to normal!

Sometimes when I go to an underground garage for 10 or 15 minutes I cannot get lock upon coming out. I was always under the impression though that this issue was no longer present with later firmware version. My unit is one of the early ones. However, when the issue happens all I need to do is turn it off and turn it back on. All is just fine immediately. But if I don't restart it I could wait perhaps even forever. Once out of curiosity I let it sit there for an hour, but it would not reacquire satellite signal fix. (Upon restarting it was immediately back to normal)

For me personally this is just a very minor inconvenience. GPSlim236 is still the receiver that best meets my needs ;-)

My 236 has similar difficulties getting a fix in certain situations. These are:
  • When I turn the GPS on in a place where it can not get a fix e.g. concrete building and leave the building a few minutes later. Seems after a certain time without lock the unit discards all cached position data and starts scanning from the very beginning.
  • When the GPS is being moved before it has acquired a fix. Usually the 236 is very quick in finding a fix after being turned on and left in a steady position for less than a minute. However if I start walking or riding a bicycle before I have a fix, chances are that it will take more than 10 minutes despite a halfways clear sky view.

In the above cases the 236 is by far outperformed by my old and cheap Garmin Etrex. I am somewhat disappointed about this and hope it can be fixed by a user deployable firmware.

The main thing the 236 does better than the Etrex is keeping a fix once acquired. That makes it possible to keep a fix from within some buildings and cuts down reacquisition time after unobstructed sky view is available again.

Sounds like others like Marvin are having similar difficulties. Anybody come across a firmware fix yet?
