Note by GpsPasSion : Below is icelolly's adaptation of the original Medion customization method (see full article for more links), enjoy !

a)Remove original SD card and insert New one (Turn off device first)
b)Connect to PC and establish guest connection.
Now follow these instructions (This is MY modified text taken from the .txt file in the zip file you downloaded):
1. Connect the Advent to your PC via ActiveSync and click 'explore'
2. Copy 'regedit.exe' from the .zip file and paste into \Windows\StartUp.
3. Copy 'modified.reg' into the root(main folder) on the device
4. Soft Reset your device using the stylus.
5. When the Advent reboots it will automatically launch Regedit. Click 'File | Import' and then locate the 'modified.reg' file we copied in Step 3, double-click it and it will then import it automaticaly.(now close this page using the "X" in top RH corner
6. (using the active sync in explore mode) Locate regedit.exe in \Windows\StartUp. Cut this file and paste into \Windows\Programs .Copy 'showtaskbar.exe' from the .zip file and paste into \Windows\StartUp
7. Finally, reset your device once more with the stylus and it will boot to the WinCE desktop.

C)You should now have a thin grey line at the bottom of your screen. If touched it will bring up the usual options in Win CE.(More of this later)
d)Select add/remove programs on active sync and delete the advent program.

Hello all
Ive just bought an Advent GPS 400 (A Medion clone?). Can this be set up to run Tom Tom. There are one or two articles about on this site which I have tried but I'm not sure wether the operating system (Win ce and Navteq) is compatible with these methods. The nearest I have got is using the instructions here:

Any help is much welcome

Well despite the lack of response on this subject (Perhaps I'm the only person wishing to mod this device) I have done it, albeit the program runs ok but no voice and some information missing from the gps signal bar and a couple of minor things. I will sit back and see if this generates any other interest.

Looks like I may have chosen the wrong GPS thing for my car!! Finding any kind of support for the Advent GPS 400 is proving difficult. Please can someone help me with updating maps and customising settings?

Do I have to buy a specific type of map?
Can I change the voice of the nice lady telling me which way to turn next?

Wow--3 replies in one go!
Firstly I have TT5 working and there are a couple of minor issues (Which you can live with until someone finds a solution).
The GPS strength bar is missing. The battery condition is missing as well. The volume can be adjusted on the 4 way navigation buttons. Apart from this it works great on my Advent and I would not go back to the original Navteq software.
Ref Andrews (awhite1)E mail:
"Doug. I see you have recently customised your Advent GPS 400. I hope you don't mind, but I have a few questions!! Mine was bought for me as a gift and I have no experience with GPS. I spend a lot of time in Ireland and notice that not all the roads are detailed ..... according to the GPS, I spend a lot of time driving through fields!! Where can I find more up to date maps? I know how to transfer them from PC to GPS, but don't know what to buy or where from. It looks as though there are a few different formats and I don't want to get the wrong one? Why did you convert your device from Navteq to TomTom software? Does it work properly? Is that what I need to do to be able to customise my GPS and update the maps?"

Sorry to hear you are forced to commute across ploughed fields
I'm sure TT5 would never do that to you
I assume the maps ARE up to date if it is a recent purchase? Perhaps the software is buggy. On a recent trip to Paris it(Navteq)told me i was 20 miles away from where i was and then all of a sudden I was mysteriously transported back to the East of Paris on the correct road. I converted to Tom Tom5 because Ive used it before and realy like the simple way the icons are placed and how easy it is for a beginner to use. And yes----I have the software already including maps of UK and Europe.
Think that answers your questions Andrew.

As for updates for the Advent I get the impression they would be as rare as rocking horse s**t.

I would have taken the thing back to PC world and replaced it with a TT one had I not thought about converting the whole thing to TT5. Considering I paid £200 for it(One day only offer before Xmas)it was well worth it at it has a larger screen and is so much cheaper. Having said all this, with its original software it works ok and i'm sure that given the odd glitch with a herd of cows it would be fine to use as it is!

Method of conversion to follow if specificaly requested.
Cheers Doug

Thanks for the info above. Still considering taking mine back, my wife paid £299 for it ...... at present, there are TT units in the sale at very similar prices. Given the lack of information or support from the Dixon Group, Advent (who gave me the number for TomTom for additional support!!!) and Navteq, I think I have all the justification I need to return it!!!

HOWEVER ..... Like you, I do like the size of the screen and it is a neat looking unit, so here's your 2nd formal request for details on method of conversion!!! (I suppose restoring the unit back to it's original state would be as easy as switching it off and running the original installation software again?)

Thanks in anticipation,

Andrew

Firstly you will need these ingredients:
1)The zip file from
http://www.gpspassion.com/download/custom150e.zip
2)A spare SD card--I used a 512mb 'cause I wanted to put UK and France on. I will buy a 1gb soon so I can get Italy/Spain and Germany on as well.
3) The TT5 software (with the SETUP exe file on!)
4)Active sync set up on your PC/Laptop.
Don't forget that if you make a mistake you can simply insert the ORIGINAL SD card that came with the unit and perform a hard reset(slide the switch over and back again). This will restore ALL the original programs back on the device and nothing is harmed!--neat yes?
I have to assume that you have the TT5 software. I cannot supply a copy for obvious reasons.
Remove your ORIGINAL SD card and insert your new one. 256mb will be enough for UK maps (128mb is borderline)
Connect to PC/Laptop and when asked, select the "no" option to create a partnership in active sync. This will set you up as a guest and wil allow you to add remove files. This will happen every time you connect up. I didn't want to set up a partnership because I already have one for my IMATE jam. The guest option works fine.
The .txt in the zip is geared up for a Medion GPS unit so I have modified the text to suit the Advent unit. (I hope the original author will excuse me for this --I would ask him/her permission if I knew who it was.)
PLEASE NOTE: As I no longer wish to run the TT5 AND the Advent programs together I did not create the shortcuts to the MP3 player/Settings or the Navigation program. In any case you will have to delete the Advent program later to enable TT to run and this then disables the "Settings and "Navteq" programs. No great loss there then.If you want to create a shortcut to the
MP3 player i'm sure this would still run ok but I haven't bothered as I only want the GPs unit to work.
This ok so far?
Doug
Edit.
Andrew I was going to take mine back and swap for the new TT one or go300. If you dont have the TT5 software then this may be the way to go for you. The Advent screen seems larger though so think about it. If I had a choice I would prefer to have an original TT unit but there again the price I paid for mine realy made me choose the upgrade option!

This is probably the most stupid question ever ...... but do I need to follow the instructions in Custom_Medion_150e.txt before I can do anything else? The .txt file seems to be geared up for keeping the Navteq menu and the unit's original functionality, simply allowing the installation of additional software and features. Whereas your process seems more geared up to simply replacing everything with the TT5 software. (Am I being a moron!!) My best guess is that I have to follow the steps in the .txt file before going onto your 'step 2' ..... is that correct?

ALSO ..... can I assume that the .txt file was assuming that any additional software would be written to the original SD Card? I know that your method ensures that the original SD Card is safe, allowing for a full system restore when/if required, but will I need to copy the files from that one to my new SD Card for the modification described in the .txt file to work?

Sorry ..... I will stop asking questions soon enough!! I'm not a forum stalker .... honest!!!

Thanks again

Sorry about the confusion. Dont worry about the moron bit its never bothered me! (joke)
What I was about to do was post MY modified text taken from the zip file and change a couple of words so as to make the instructions ADVENT applicable. This will make it so much easyer. The reason I didnt put in the shorcuts to the navigator and settings is because I found TT5 would not run until the NAVMAN program is deleted via active sync. If you have the TT5 software available I will display a step by step method of conversion--ok?

If you ever need to seem edit, change skin or flash a Motorola RazR phone ..... I'm your man!!! I guess this whole Sat Nav thing is a little new to me so far!!!

Step by step conversion instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok chaps here we go-an idiots guide (errm not suggesting that I come under that catagory I think!

a)Remove original SD card and insert New one (Turn off device first)

Phew-------Make a cup of tea and try this out and get ready for next step(not too much more to go)

Is there a particular reason for getting a new card? Can I not just save the current contents onto my pc's hard drive, install the tomtom stuff and then copy it all back if it goes pearshaped?
