Sorry if this is a newb question but has or is the naming standard for Mapopolis maps changed I thought it was as follows:
CountyNameSTNGC.mlp

where

CountyName is the name of the county or city
ST is the state or province
NGC is the version of the map
mlp is the extent for mapopolis.

Because my maps are named: CountyNameST.mlp (mine are from the Mapopolis Navigator CD) and I still get Active Guidance and I thought only the NGC maps had active guidance.

It's changed a little.

United States maps begin with the name of the county followed by the two-letter abbreviation of the state. The letter after that is a "G" or an "N" that indicates whether or not the map is GPS enabled. The next letter is an "M" to indicate that it is a map for the Palm-OS or a "P" for the Pocket-PC platform. The final two numbers indicate the release number of the map.

For example, Queens county in New York state would start with "QueensNY." This map might be called "QUEENSNYGM05.pdb" (depending on the release).

For convenience, we refer to our maps by letters that represent a release. The current release for the US, Canadian, and Western Europe maps is our "NC" release. The next release will be "ND," and so forth.

Maps on CD - and in the all-county, all-region zip files, have the name shortened, but the internal name remains the same.

Well, you know what version the maps are on the cd, since it says it on the cd.....editing the file in notepad i can't see a way to tell..... Personally I have the Plat+GPS cd (for my m505) and then I have the Navigator maps on my harddrive for my T|T. I just don't get them mixed up =]

I renamed all my files to "ST COUNTY.mlp" as I find it more convienent to have the maps ordered by state and in a more readable format.

As far as I can tell, Mapopolis doesn't care what the file is actually called. Maplets work fine after files are renamed, and there are internal flags to tell what type of map it is.

(I bought the Navigator map pack so I don't have to worry about diffrent versions anyway.)

Hi, Ian,

Yes, that works on the Pocket-PC, but not for Palm users. Since the Palm viewer looks for internal map names, it will only display them, regardless of what the external file name is.

Thus, while this is beneficial on the Pocket-PC, Palm users should not try renaming their maps.

Any chance this can get changed? I have OS4 and OS5 maps on my card as I occasionally use the m505 for mapopolis and sometimes use the T|T. Would be nice if i could put a 4- or 5- on the beginning..... Or maybe make the 5.x series accept the Nav maps (just as Plat+GPS).

I just downloaded New York State Navigator maps today. I have "QUEENSNYNGC". Did I get the right maps?

Hi, Kadge,

Yes, that's a Navigator map from the current release if you LOGGED IN and selected
the top choice in the county page listing. In this case, I think you must snagged
the state zip file. These don't have the final "05" part, but are are otherwise
identical.

We've been working on the site, and when you LOG IN, you should only see choices
that you can download after you make your OS-declaration by choicing your platform.

Please also note that, as a subscriber, you have access to the lesser-series maps
as well. You'll see that on county pages. Please look at the end of the line,
because not all series (ie Enhanced and Platinum + GPS) work with the Navigator
viewers.

Just wondering, because of your discussion with scottdw above.

I'm confused. I just downloaded the Orange County California Navigator map for the Pocket PC. It is named ORANGECANGC.mlp Thecounty base maps all appear to be NGC after the County and State. How does this relate to the explanation above by Lamar which describes Pocket PC files with a "P" for Pocket PC and a "G" (I assume) for GPs. Shouldn't the map be called ORANGECAGP05(or some other rev number).mlp?

Proposal:

In future releases of maps, change the naming convention to some variation of:

ST_County_version
ST_MajorRoads_version

Better yet, leave the version info off completely.

Does anyone prefer the current naming standard?
Do we need the version number info in the name?

Jim

Well, in fact this is exactly my question (from October 30th).

I guess, from Lamar's response (from November 2nd), that we have the correct map, and Mapopolis doesn't have any real standard for naming their map files.

In response to JimDantin
It would be nice if the map files were named as you suggest (ST_County_version). Putting the most significant part first usually makes more sense.. for organizing computer stuff anyway.

I don't care whether the version code is present or not (as long as it's at the end of the file name), although it might be nice to have so I know I just downloaded the right maps.

Maybe Lamar can clarify. I'm guessing that NGC" decodes to "N" for the county base map, "G" for GPS enabled, and "C" for Windows CE/Pocket PC for the latest files......For Place Guide overlay maps, the "N" gets replaced with another "G", resulting in ORANGECANGC and ORANGECAGGC for the county and Place Guide maps respectively.
