Thanks for the very good review of the BT GPS and the all the latest updates. It really helped me in comparing the available GPS solutions for the pocket pc. This BT GPS seems to be a very promising concept. Do you know the actual availability of this device in the USA. And when will it be available in Europe too? Kind Regards, Ronald

Thanks for the kind words. This device is pretty unique especially when you first a start using it, like all things wireless ! you know that's a good question. The US Distributor of the BT GPS is: http://www.transplantcomputing.com/ I got mine from Steve and you can check with him sales@transplantcomputing.com As far as I know things are on track.

I'm very keen to get hold of one of these unit (like others). Do you have experience with these interworking with an Ipaq 3970 (or similar) and OziCE. I checked with Des (Developer of OziCE) and he doesn't know if it will work.

Well I'm pretty sure it would work. Actually I believe I tried with a demo of OziCE a few weeks ago. Don't remember for sure, scary
I'll try again, but since you can select any bitrate in NMEA there's little reason it wouldn't.
You can select Com port 8, can't you in OziCE ?

OziCE can do COM 1 - 8. I'm about to order one of these units so it would be great if you could find the time to do a quick test for me.
cheers

Ok, fired up 1.10.7 with a map of the world on my 3670/CFx2 sleeve/Socket BT CF Card, selected port 7 and it worked in a snap. No surprise so I can't see why it wouldn't work with the 3970 too! Let us know where you order it!

Well I think they're working out distribution deals right now and will not be selling from their website anymore, that was just to get things started. It's probably ok for low volume but I don't think they're set up to handle anything big, whcih this BT GPS looks like it might be ! Where are you guys located? Avesta is already selling it in France I believe.

Will the Emtac Bluetooth GPS work with DeLorme XMap Handheld - Street Atlas USA Edition Software? I currently have this software, and was hoping to use it with my Delorme Earthmate GPS, but, have discovered an issue where the Bluetooth of my IPAQ 3975 will not play nicely and prevents a connection to my Earthmate, via a SocketCom Ruggedized CF to Serial Port, or, via a Serial port/charger that plugs into the bottom of my IPAQ....... I've still no word for Delorme at all as to if they have resolved this issue....
Will any GPS software be bundled with the Emtac Bluetooth GPS?

I just got my Bluetooth GPS today from Steve at TransplantComputing. Those folks at TransplantComputing were very kind to me in spite of my constant pestering. I feel very lucky to have this little jewel in my hands. Now I just need to get it to work.
While waiting for the GPS, I have been through a few Bluetooth PC cards for my laptop. The first card locked up Win2000 when the laptop went into sleep mode. The software for the second card was garbage. Now I've got a 3COM with the little blue antenna. It won't connect to the GPS, but it does connect to my nephew Bubba's fancy cell phone.
The GPS docs suggest that when connecting, I should be prompted to enter a PIN or Passkey. The 3COM software doesn't display a prompt for "Passkey" when connecting, but it does ask for a "password" when connecting in high-security mode. Somehow I don't think passkey and password are the same thing, especially when I see documentation for the Nokia 6210 phone that also requires a "passkey." (3COM support says they can't connect to the Nokia either.)
The SocketCOM card that I had did prompt for a passkey. I shouldn't have been in such a hurry to send it back. Maybe I'll have to repent and buy another one, unless one of you GPS gurus knows how to make the 3COM work.
I've got National Geographic Topo! software and TUMONZ (The Ultimate Map of New Zealand) software on tap for testing once I get hooked up. Then I've got to find a way to plot my position on these digital ortho-quads that I've been downloading.
I the meantime I guess I'll just use the Bluetooth GPS for a nightlight. The flashing blue LED sure is pretty. |

Looks like they're "pouring in"! I currently use a Socket CF card and used a USB dongle previously. Both worked fine with the BT GPS. Since you just need a basic virtual com port I'm sure the 3com should work too. Go into your system properties to see what COM port BT has been assigned, then go back to your application and select that port, that's pretty much it. By default, the BT GPS is set to 4,800 NMEA so any program can use that. I don't believe you can create a bond with the BT GPS since there's no way to type one in obviously to respond to the request of the other side. Maybe they've added one in the final version but I don't see how.
