EDIT BY GPSPASSIOn

SN and SBAS toggling with MMSiRF and SN/FW with APLSSiRF

Depending on your planned use, it can be useful to tweak your SiRFstarIII based GPS receiver and while there is the powerful SiRFdemo tool to do that on a PC see this tutorial, existing PocketPC tools were somewhat lacking, until APLSiRF arrived and now MMSiRFsetup courtesy of Richard from Memory-Map. Here is a quick overview of what they do:

- APLSiRF (download): SN toggling and SN and Firmware polling after switching to SiRF
- MMSiRF (download): "one-click" SN and SBAS toggling

I tested both with a Globalsat BT-338 receiver with FW 3.1.1 and they did the job, with a WM2003SE based S100 and a WM5.0 based x50v. Enjoy :

Hello,
I have a PDA device "Palmax GPS" and I've found out that the 'Static Navigation' is ON in it's GPS receiver. This I don't like especially for walking with a GPS.
The only program which, I think, could switch it off is 'SP GPS View'. And here there is a main problem: when I start this program, I can see no menus! Only a text at the top COM1(57600) and that's all. Maybe this is the matter of Windows Mobile 2003?
Does anybody know how could the program run correctly or who is the author to ask. Or maybe there is another solution to switch the 'SN' off.
Best regards
Andrzej

Welcome to the forums.
Yes spgps does not run under WM2003SE but does under WM2003 or WM5.0...go figure. Have not been able to track down the author. However, unless you have a SiRFIII chipset in there, which I doubt, disabling SN won't have much of an effect.

Hi,
in the Palmax there is a SiRFIII chipset indeed, and this is why I want to switch of a SN. I can't modify the system to WM2003 or 5.0 so I hope there is another software or solution. Or maybe somebody else knows the author...

Hi,
I've made a simple program for switching the Static Navigation on/off on Plamax or other PDA.
Now, without SN my Palmax works much better :)
Program is here: www.astercity.net/~anpicom1/APLSIRF-0-0-0-1.zip

Hey, good work, will try it now. Can I host it on the site servers with due credit ?

Tried it on my S100 with BT338, seems to work ok, could you maybe add a button to read the current status of SN ? Also, small typo, in "switch to SRIF" ;-)

Thanks, for your comments. I don't have too much time for this program but I've added displaying of the SN status.
You can try it: www.astercity.net/~anpicom1/APLSIRF-0-0-0-2.zip
Of course you can host it if you want.

Excellent, thanks, will link it from the SN discussion thread. If you have some time later on it would be great if you could allow for SABS ON/OFF toggling too ;-)

Many settings can be done. The only questions is which are worthy to be implement. I also should use internally a better SIRF-replay analyses.
But... I have not too much time for this. And I have rather little knowledge about GPS protocols.
For example your suggestion about SBAS (I guess this you meant) - I don't know what are numbers 120-138 which can be used as a parameter for this function. And there is some correlation with DGPS...
However If there will be a list of requirements from ev. users and I know how to make them, I could try do add other functionalities.
Or I can share my sources as well if somebody else can do the programming.

Yes, SBAS sorry, sure I realize this takes time, but actually I was suggesting toggling SBAS on and off as you did for SN and as GPSTweak does for SBAS, I wouldn't worry about selecting satellites, by default it is auto-search.

As I can see, GPSTweak (ver 0.9) switches only WAAS/EGNOS ?

Switching SBAS doesn't seem so easy. I must send the command 0x85 with some parameters:
- DGPS Source
- Internal Beacon Frequency
- Internal Beacon Bit Rate
And then command 0xAA with:
- Auto mode or PRN value
- mode (test/integrity)
I can't find an easy switch-command.

Actually I think all you would need to do is switch the DPGS source from "none" to "SBAS Channel" if you can send just that parameter, there might be a NMEA command for that actually too, if it doesn't work easily in SIRF mode.

Andrzej, just in case you wonder anyone appreciate what you did.
Your program is precisely what I have been looking for months!

Sirf3 is a great chipset by far.
It is a shame, it lack the very much needed software support.

Sirf Pte ltd folks owe people like you an BIG thank you....for taking time understanding sirf3 protocol and implementing software to enable features which they claim Sirf3 can do!

Nice to hear that the program was useful not only for me. Maybe I would implement some more functionality but now I'm rather busy too much. Waiting for suggestions - one waiting is SBAS :).
