Mapopolis-Tungsten T3 & Tapwave Zodiac Status
New Monday, March 1, 2004: Mapopolis has posted a beta-test version with support for The Tungsten T3 and Tapwave Zodiac full screen. This version also introduces the pSpeak text-to-speech engine on the Palm platform, a new 3D perspective mode, click-drag map rotation, day/night view modes, and numerous small enhancements.
http://www.mapopolis.com/PalmNavBeta.zip
Mapopolis has begun work on supporting both the normal and landscape modes of the Tungsten-T3 in Navigator for Palm-OS. This thread will be the focal point and clearinghouse for information as it is gathered.
We urge owners of this model to participate in this forum in order to help us develope and improve the product, discuss workarounds, and dissect bugz.
Here's what we know so far:
1. Resolved Mapopolis Navigator runs in the 320x320 mode already and screen rotation is already supported. Mapopolis is now running in full screen mode on both the T3 and Tapwave Zodiac.
2. We have confirmed that serial GPS and Bluetooth GPS work correctly with the T3. Only Bluetooth GPS is currently supported on the Tapwave.
3. Resolved Grafitti G-2 delays map drags by .75 second before it will release the screen to the stylus. This is a bug in the G2 implementation, as there are no entry fields on a map page. The third button from the right, which looks like a stylized "M" turns off G-2 with a tap, and the map responds correctly.
4. Resolved You can make the T3 crash by exiting the program while the GPS is running. This makes a soft reset necessary, but doesn't seem to destablilize the OS otherwise, and the machine resets very quickly. We've had no reports of the T3 crashing when the program is exited with GPS running since the 1.18 (beta only) version of the program came out. At this point, it seems to be running fine.
5. News - We will be working with the Tungsten-T3 and the Sony UX-50, as well as the Garmin iQue to add program support for these screens and the landscape mode. We still intend to support the Garmin iQue.
6. On the T3, we plan to support the new "handedness" feature so you can aim your universal connector to the right if you use the unit in a car mount with a serial GPS. Done.
7. Please send your bug reports and observations to support@mapopolis.com with "Attn: Lamar - T3 report" or similar in your subject line.
8. A new, experimental voice-editing program is now available. You'll need a very good quality PC microphone and sound card to get good results... but find it here:
http://kudzumonthly.com/mapopolis/TalkEdit_0.2.zip
9. Resolved We have identified a potential problem with the Tungsten-T3 and Sandisk-branded SD cards that can result in a failure to read the card correctly or to install maps to the card with the Mapopolis Map Installer software or with an external card reader. Palm has issued a ROM patch for the T-3 that addresses this issue and initial reports indicated that it is effective. The patch can be found at:

Mapopolis T3 FAQ
Q. How do I download the current viewer and a demo map of my area to try on my T3? (I realize it only will run in 320x320 mode!)
A. Come to http://www.mapopolis.com, look at the menu on the left, and follow this path into the website:
Download App -> Palm OS-5 PDA -> Download Mapopolis Navigator 1.2x
When unzipped, the downloaded file will produce
Mapopolis.prc MapopolisWords.pdb FredericksburgCityVA.pdb license.html
Next, from the same download page, look again at the menu on the left. You'll follow this path to get your local demo map:
Online Maps -> Demo -> Select State & Show All Maps
When you get to your local county page, look for the first listing that has $0.00 for a price and has the words "Demo Map" to the left of it.
Also save this map to your PC.
When it arrives, double-click on Mapopolis.prc, MapopolisWords.pdb, and your demo map to move them to your HotSync folder.
When you next HotSync your T3, the application and map will transfer, and you'll find the program icon on the launcher screen.
Q. How can I obtain the User's Manual for the 1.x viewer?
A. You can get the latest version of the user's guide at
http://kudzumonthly.com/mapopolis/PalmNavMan.zip
Q. How can I send a screen shot from Navigator to you?
A. We suggest that you use a $12 program called "ScreenShot5" that will run on the your T3. You'll have to purchase their basic program first, but their beta version is the one you want. It will save screenshots to the SD card in GIF format.
It's available at this website:
http://www.linkesoft.com
Please save your screen shot images to your SD card, transfer them to your PC with an external card reader, and send them to lamar@mapopolis.com as *an email attachment.*
Please do not attempt to send attachments to the email address that I normally sign with!

The T3 allows you specify right or left handedness, and this determines which way the unit points when in landscape mode. The default right-hand setting means that the map is upside-down when you plug in a serial mouse and have the cable/connector on the right. I've been riding around with left-handedness selected, even though I'm NOT left-handed, to keep the cable out of the way.
And, oh, yeah. I got my T3 yesterday. I anticipate I'll be learning quite a bit about this cool little machine.

I'm having trouble with the Mapopolis CA-M50x connector cable and my new T3. I cannot get this cable to lock into place on my T3s universal connector. It looks to be the correct connector in that it closely resembles my the universal connector on my Palm cradle. But even though it will sort of mate up with my T3s serial port, I only get it to work if I use a lot of pressure to hold it in place. As soon as I release the pressure, it falls away from the port. Is anyone else having problems with this cable and a Tungsten, especially a T3?
Thanks,
Jack Swinden www.JackSwinden.com |

Jack, I had problems with a cable with my T1 when I first got my mouse GPS. This cable had a backing plate that mated up with the m500 series. I had to change cables. These folks, www.positioningsolutions.com (216-371-3806) sell cables and can advise you.The cable I have now works with my T3 just fine. You can also email them at gpssupport@positioningsolutions.com.

Finally.....Got my hands on a new T3, downloaded a trial version of Mapopolis, switched on bluetooth started the GPSmart and it all works. Only thing left is to wait for the landscape version of Mapopolis to come available.
My only complaint with the T3 is the screen is slightly narrower than my Clie T665c about 3mm.
The GPSmart GPS is an amazing unit in spite of it's qwirky menu system. This is the GPS for hikers that venture into areas of poor coverage. It excels at fixing a position where my Garmin 48 struggles to get a 2D fix. |

Hi, Piloto, welcome to the Mapopolis forum on GpsPasSion. You can also find the Navigator release notes here.
Say, you wouldn't know where I could get the manual in PDF for that GPS, would you?
About the T3, talk around the office indicates that this effort will pick up after we push the Western European NC map release out the door, which should happen Nov. 1... if the planets align and the stars coincide and no major problems crop up.
At Mapopolis Support it's "Oh, happy day!" We're standardizing on just one Navigator viewer for the Palm and one for the Pocket-PC in both the North American and Western European markets. We're celebrating.
Now we need some more "feature creep" on the Palm... and the Clie.

Thanks, Lutz!
I'll snag it -- wonder how I missed it when I went there?

I noticed that both the Mapopolis Navigator version 4.x for Pocket PC and the Mapopolis Navigator version 1.x for Palm 5 PDAs use Navigator NC maps. I am fortunate in having both a Tungsten T3 and an Ipaq 3870,and would like to use the NC maps. Are there any differences in functionality of these two versions of Mapopolis Navigator? If so, which hardware/software combination offers the most functionality? (Right now I am using Mapopolis Navigator version 3.x with the Ipaq, and want to upgrade to NC maps.)
Thanks,
Bruce |

Actually, a dedicated DSP was needed for PalmOS4, not PalmOS5. PalmOS5 does offer multitasking (not just a DSP workaround), though it is limited in its implementation. |

Hi, Deslock,
An engineer at Audiost, the transcribe dictation folks, told me a while back that the Tungsten C has the same audio DSP as the Tungsten-T, but Palm had disabled stereo output in firmware in order to provide for their somewhat useless cell-phone plug. So, I was also under the impression that a separate IC was providing the audio in the T-3. In light of the recent audo-interrupt problem/performance degradation on the T-3, are you saying that the Xscale CPU is providing the audio?
And... he was actually quoting me in a thread here that I had a Palm engineer buddy look over right after I posted it. (The subject was multi-tasking and OS-5).

This is a mockup of how the Tungsten-3 should look running on Mapopolis. How widescreen mode will look has not yet been determined.
