One of the reasons I chose Toshiba as my second PPC was the fact that it had a full USB port implementation, while all other PPCs use a serial port for the bottom connector. After some searching and research I have found that this can pay off in a big way.

Anypack (www.anypackusa), which makes portable USB drives, is selling a USB mass storage driver developed by "deje" in Germany. He developed this driver as freeware, but couldn't afford to continue its development without some help. Anypack is selling it for $20.00 and passing on some of the $ to him to fund further development.

I was excited about this for two reasons: 1. With a full USB implementation this means I could possibly attach a card reader to my Toshiba and put maps on a CF card. CF is much cheaper than SD and I could carry a lot more with me and still use my CF GPS. 2. I own an Archos 30GB MP3 player. The Archos is unusual in that it requires no special software to download files, but can be used as an external self-powered hard disk and files can be copied to it, over USB, with Windows Explorer.

So, owning the Toshba and the Archos, I spent $16 for a USB cable from Toshiba and $20 for the drivers from Anypack. It works!! I can attach a USB card reader and access all the files on the CF card plugged into it. More importantly, I can attach the Archos and have 30GB of files available in a self-powered drive. This is pretty exciting.

The next test will be to see if Routis can access the maps, through the USB port, on my CF reader or Archos. Even if it can't, the ability to carry 30GB of maps in a small self-powered drive, and download them to the PPC, is ample justification for spending $36.

I'll report more later.

Very nice indeed! Kinda makes up for the "sucky" USB port when used with a mouse GPS ;-)

I don't understand. Does the Toshiba have trouble with a mouse GPS? I was thinking of getting one.

Yes, it's very hard to make this work properly, there are countless posts in the forums. It works more or less, but it's not the plug'n'play serial connection of say an iPaq.

Well, I installed Routis on the CF card along with the maps. Using the Anypack driver and a card reader Routis runs perfectly from the card and sees the maps just fine.

But I wonder if a regular laptop usb gps mouse might work on the host cable or the presentation pack, bet the power draw would be too high. I too have the e805 and like it for the usb port. Using the Ratoc cf to usb drivers I've got an addonics ext. powered notebook drive enclosure working but it needs a portable power source, so far my archos multimedia jukebox 20 doesn't work with those drivers, think I'll try the anypak (btw that link appears dead).
