did anyone of you also check out the cobra 4500 unit? how's the traffic capability of that unit compared to the garmin 2720 + GTM10 setup?

I think the traffic manager was managing several Clear Channel stations. The switchboard told me they had several people working traffic. It surprised me that traffic got that much attention.

I have been using the GTM10 since Monday and, while it shows me where thr traffic is, it has never re-routed me around slow-traffic areas (yellow). I have Auto Reroute turned on -- is there something I am missing?

Maybe it's not re-routing because the traffic isn't slow enough where it would be faster to go another way?

Make sure that "continuous autorouting" is enabled in your unit.

Finally got around to installing mine in my Expedition. Was able to get it completely hidden in the dash on top of the Bose head unit, though the short cables provided made it tough. Ran the data cable out through an opening in the lighter flip down cover. Picks up Baltimore, DC, and Richmond/Newport News channels. Haven't tried any routing scenarios with it yet. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to see the signal LED until I noticed the signal bars on the Traffic screen. They work great.

I do like the external solutions several of you have. Makes it easier to move between cars. Will stand by to see how your signal works with the stubs.

Will post results when I actually get some detour scenarios under my belt.

I've got a 2003 Yukon Denali XL and I'm wondering if anyone has successfully installed this into the Yukon's radio/antenna. If so, could you post the instructions of how to get to the radio/antenna unit.

One of the reasons I bought the 2720 was for the GTM10. Now that I'm thinking about ordering one, I just took a quick look under my dash and it was pretty tight in there.

scubapilot2000,

According to the Bet Buy site, the GTM 10 is not a fit for the 2003 Yukon. I had the same issue with my Envoy. It seems the antenna connector is not compatible.

I have a Saturn L-series and the Best Buy website says that it does not work with my vehicle either - but I received my GTM 10 today and it took me all of 10 minutes to install it and have it running - using only the adapters that were included with the unit.

I don't think the Best Buy site is correct on many of the vehicles.

I have it up and running in San Antonio, Texas - I am going to Houston this weekend and should have plenty of opportunities to test it out. I am still a bit confused on how it decides to re-route you. Maybe it will become more clear after this weekend.

I like the Radio Shack parts antennas that some of you users have made, but if anyone does not mind a few wires on their dash they can look at these

I've bought the one that tapes to the windsheild & tested the reception as the approx. 24" antenna was lying down outside my office window & got 3 bars on the FM signal meter. I'll install this one in the car. I also ordered the soft antenna for rentals. For $7, how can you lose....

Used the GTM 10 for "real" this morning for the first time. I had a traffic warning this morning that popped up as a yellow diamond at the bottom right of the screen. When you touch the symbol, it takes you to the traffic event and asks if you want to detour around it. It did not automatically re-route me although auto-reroute is on (maybe it has to be a high severity event?).

Also, it seems that once you detour, even if the traffic clears before you get there or have to detour, you can't have the unit take you back to your original route. The only issue that I see with this fact is if you have a route with multiple waypoints going on, then it will pose a problem. If you only have a destination, then I assume that you can always have the unit update the route.

Sorry if that is confusing - if so, ask and I will clarify.

davbow,

Were you already on the road that had the traffic event when the icon appeared?

I think it acts differently if you are.

It appears to me the following occurs (feel free to correct me if anyone has seen differently):

1 - You are actively routing and driving down a road. Let's say it is I-95. 10 miles in front of you an accident occurs. The GTM 10 picks up this accident, sees it is on the road you are currently travelling, and offers you the option to route around it.

2 - You are actively routing and driving down a road. Let's say it is I-95. Your next turn will be in a few miles onto I-66. However an accident just occurred on I-66. The GTM sees this, and will automatically adjust your route to avoid I-66 all together without prompting you.

moofy - I think you are right about the routing when on the road versus when off the road.

Having said that, I was able to really put my 2720/GTM 10 through the paces this weekend in Houston and to and from San Antonio.

There are several problems with the implementation of the GTM 10 that I discovered this weekend. Here are several of my observations:

I am not sure if the method of rerouting comes from the 2720 or is included in the GTM 10 signal. What I found was that if there was a delay - in some instances the traffic message said "5 minutes" - the 2720 would sometimes route me 30 minutes to 2 hours out of the way. I know that the idea is to miss the traffic, but 2 hours sure seemed like a long way to miss a 5 minute delay.

Also, I found in Houston that many of the traffic messages were incorrect. Delays that did not actually exist - and in one instance, information that I-10 West was closed at Barker-Cypress, when in actuality, the Barker-Cypress exit was closed but I-10 was fine. This particular message caused the 2720 to try to route me over an hour out of the way. Maybe if it had been accurate, that would have been called for, but I never slowed down below the speed limit at the location where the "incident" was located.

In addition, I am not certain that the unit distinguishes between east/west or north/south. In several instances, it seemed that problems in the opposite direction of the freeway caused the 2720 to want to re-route me.

Just a few thoughts - I just got home a few minutes ago. I will post any other "funniness" that I think of later.

These reroute times seem fantastic. I'm looking at the Barker-Cypress exit on I-10. If I-10 was closed there, I don't see why the unit would not detour to Hwy 6, 2 miles before, and then route around on Westminster Pkwy, or even take you back to I-10 via 1093->359->10.

I have no experience with the 2720, but the 'detour' function on my 26x0 works very well for quickly getting me around congestion on side-streets and back on route. Houston is of course a major metro area with numerous secondary arteries. A detour that needs to add 1 hour or 2 hours just seems incredible. 30 min I could maybe believe as an upper limit.

Very strange.
