SiRF mode is not available in XT mode - see the review but it is in ST mode. You do need to connect at NMEA/4,800 before sending a Command to change the bitrate and protocol of course. SBAS is not protocol dependant, it's a setting "inside" the GPS and SBAS correction will be sent regardless of the protocol, see this article for more details.

Thank you for clearing that up about SBAS and SiRF...
For the benefit of others who may need the GpsPasSion SiRF-ing for Dummies course (those like me that need a little more hand-holding)...Here's my steps:
(NOTE: COM5 = my Dell Axim's port assignment; stays constant for all software needing to talk to the GPS)
Start Leadtek GPS Monitor 1.0 Tools>Port Settings>NMEA/COM5/4800 Tools>Connect Status: NMEA/COM5/4800/Valid/blue-blinking (View>Development NMEA data scrolling by...) Tools>Command>SiRF>38400/8/1/N...tap OK Status: SiRF/COM5/38400/Valid/blue-blinking (View>Development SiRF data scrolling by...)
Hey, I can even see it trying to access SBAS sats !
BTW: SiRF binary protocol seems to really bog down with 4800 baud. Is 38400 recommended, and does SiRF need the higher throughput for proper function and reporting?

Thanks again. Do I have the latest version of CE monitor? Mine says "GPS Monitor" throughout (icon, About..., etc).
No, the Axim stylus is fairly flat and just fits. It even touches the "wall" behind the switch, but I can turn the stylus 90 degrees and it will still operate the switch, but doesn't reach the "wall." So it's tight, but looks to be about twice the width of a large paperclip wire. |

Well I got my Fortuna Xtrack Dual mode yesterday. Today I tried it in the downtown Manhattan (New York City). I must say that I am completely impressed by its ability to obtain a fix when there are buildings every where and the only sky you see is right in front of you (no sides because of buildings and no back because I was holding my pocket pc right in front of me). It simply amazed me. A few days back I had bought ambicom cf gps and that couldnt get a fix even once. Ofcourse that was because of the standart mode in that gps card and does not mean that one was inferior but certainly for a place like new york, fortuna dual mode is a blessing.
The gps position kept moving a lot though. I guess because of the faint low quality signals. I dont blame the gps for that and having a fix all the time with reasonable accuracy of position was a delight.
I dont know how to enable WAAS though. I use mopopolis and it makes no mention of waas. I wonder if the gps just does waas automatically or we need to enable it manually. I dont want to play around with the sirf binary protocal simply because i trust nmea more and dont want to screw up anything by playing around with protocols.
Does anyone know of a good utility that will tell whether it is a 2d fix or a 3d fix and the signal strenghts of different "birds".

First, you can't enter WAAS in the xTrak mode. Second, there is no real need for it anyway. I don't think you would see much of a difference.

Yes, Xtrac rules out SBAS (WAAS or EGNOS) but it really wouldn't change much anyway, WAAS is really designed improves the reliability of GPS for critical applications in the skies or at sea - check out this article for explanations and links: http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=50
Have you tried the Fortuna in ST mode too, the Amicom/Billionton is such a poor performer (see test on the site) that you can't really draw any conclusions from using it. The "jumping" you see in Xtrac is "normal" as you'd gathered, it's working with such low signals!

Hi All,
I am new to the PPC GPS world and have a question about WAAS accuracy specs listed my the manufacturers. I am patiently waiting for my Fortuna PocketXtrack to arive and have noticed something about the listed WAAS accuracy.
Fortuna lists the PocketXtrack accuracy as: Position: 10 meters, 2D RMS 7 meters 2D RMS, WAAS corrected 1-5 meter, DGPS corrected
Others list accuracy as: Position Horizontal: Up to 3 meters, WAAS enabled territories, 25m 95% (SA off) Position Vertical: Up to 3 meters, WAAS enabled territories, 40m 95% (SA off)
First: Why the difference (up to 3 meters vs. 7 meters) when they are both WAAS?
Second: What is the 2D RMS refering to?
Thanks for a great resource gpspassion!
-Nils
