08/10/05 Full ROM Update bring GPS SiRFstarIII module to FW3.1.1, details > below < 08/02/05 GPS Update to FW 3.1 available > HERE <
 http://dsc-computers.com/product_info.php?products_id=212&language=en
The first GPS PDA sporting a SiRFstarIII chipset has arrived, at least in Europe, under the Yakumo DeltaX name. They released OEM versions of the Mio 168 in the past so it's quite possible that this is an OEM version of the Mio Oscar, see pictures below:

dsc-computers were kind enough to send me a test model and here are my first impressions:
1. Unlike the 168 antenna sits flush with the casing and rotates 2. Removable 1,200mAh battery 3. miniUSB plug for synching and recharging 4. Battery life came in at 2.5 hours vs 4 on the Mio 168 5. GPS sensitivity seemed a bit low for a SiRFstarIII GPS, but the update to FW 3.1 I loaded today seems to have improved things a lot. It might still be prone to the "jet lag" bug though as the original version was.
Questions, comments ?

I thought that I saw a statement from Carl@SIRF that said it was fixed (in one of the early fixes), although from some posts I've read, it seems like it's still with us.

Well it would have been fixed with 3.1.1 based on what Carl wrote and the Yakumo update was 3.1.0. So far so good for me with 3.1.1 in terms of the "jet lag" bug, got a link to a thread where people are still seeing it with 3.1.1 ?

| Haven't seen anything specific, just some 236 users complaining about not being able to get a lock without a cold reset. Really don't remember the firmware, but I'll see if I can find one of the threads. |

Ah ok, let's try to be specific, this is a pretty serious issue ;-) But yes the 236 would have been prone to that bug since it shipped with FW3.1.0 not 3.1.1

The NEW firmware upgrade that has just appeared today on the Yakumo web site (with todays date in the file details) requires a ROM upgrade, the accompaniing PDF instruction file is only in German! tough on us English users, however with the screenshots it thought i would be able to do it, BUT the instruction to reset then press the "joystick" down to get into ROM update more does not seem to work for me, please can anyone who has managed this uprade help me? thanks john |

English ROM Upgrade available > HERE<
Manages to work it out. The documentation is correct except for point 4. This should be: "Take battery out. Swith button from ON -> OFF and then OFF-> ON. Then push down on the joypad"
Installed the firmware, but really no joy. I cant seem to get a loc on any sats and Tom Tom 5 keeps crashing out of the app saying No GPS data or something. Anyone have any advice. I set the device up as Other NMEA / 4800 bps / Native GPS. It sees the unit and starts searching for Sats. Doesnt really find them and crashes out? Have re-installed and re-flashed device. No luck
P.S - The GPS firmware says its Oscar 150B, which may confirm thoughts about the Mio Oscar and this device being similar. |

Right, it seems to have worked itself out.All in all it was a toss up between this unit, a cheap PDA/GPS Bluetooth adapter or the Navigon PNA 150 (All are round £200). Had a couple days to play with it and I am very impressed. I have been playing with the M500 and BT388 bluetooth adapter and for ease of use I prefer the Yakumo.
There are still a few gripes about the unit:
1.) Satellite lock time: It seems to take between 3-4 minutes on a cold start to lock onto satellites. This does not matter if I am in an open area or densely populated. (I am in London). Other than that the device works a charm. I have noticed that detection of sat signals is improved when the device is plugged in.
2.) Accidently left the device on and it ran the battery down. Instead of switching off, it did a complete hard reset. Another weirdness is that the unit will switch on and get just past boot screen and then turn off if the battery cover is not on? (There seems to be a dinky switch that closes when putting battery cover on. If anything will break I suspect this will be it)
Thats about it. Unit seems a little tricky to get hold of in the UK, Montys of Sheffield (selling their stuff on ebay) is about the cheapest.

1. That doesn't sound normal, you might want to force some cold resets with CE Monitor (in the download section of the portal) to see what's going on. DC power shouldn't be a factor.
2. Yes, same here, you really need to let it plugged in when not in use. A full backup of a clean install is a good idea too ;-)
