The Computex 2005 Show started yesterday in Taipei in Taiwan and GpsPasSion is on the spot to take a look at new GPS, Mobile and hi-tech devices. This page will be updated regularly over the next few days with pictures and comments and if you have requests, you're welcome to indicate them here and I'll do my best to look into them.
Enjoy the tradeshow!
DAY ONE - 05/31

Globalsat's new "mouse" GPS looks like little UFO ;-) On the right a SiRFstarIII CF GPS prototype
Globalsat's "all-in-one" GV-101's interface has been fine-tuned since CeBIT in March and makes for an impressevice and very responsive device now - note the optional Bluetooth module for hands-free calling
Spectec's tiny 802.11b SD card and a collection of SD based devices
Haicom has an impressive line-up or GPS receivers with multi-chipsets support - No pictures allowed on the Royaltek booth for some reason...
Hitachi drums up some attention for its products...including the new 7K100 a 7,200rpm drive for laptops with capacities up to 100Gb
Remember the BenQ P50 PDA Phone that got mobile fans excited last year? Apparently it's still on the map...
GoPass is a new name to me, they have a NemeriX based (v3 firmware) Bluetooth GPS and GPS cradles
Mio was showing the new Mio 169, a very nice PDA designed with easy GPS use in mind, unfortunately it is only due to be released in Asia for now, while Europe and USA will likely get the next generation in 2006
DAY TWO - 06/01
D-Media's inView N911 GPS PocketPC has not had much success so far, but they have now added the inView G1, a WinCE device with an interesting swivel antenna that can support the G1 for use as a photo album. They are using a Centrality GPS chipset and the good news is that there is an option for Bluetooth
One of the main announcements of Computex 2005, the Asus A636 is a GPS PDA with Bluetooth and WiFi. Not pictured here (as per ASUS's request) is the fact that the antenna rotates from right to left. Althought the A636 is "not finalized" it has already received the "Best Choice of Computex 2005 award"...
The ETEN 600 adds 802.11b to the 500 and remains very "plasticky". As its name implies the Eintein by Gigabyte is a very capable device (GSM/Bluetooth/802.11/TV and FM) although at this point it is a "mock up"
The same likely goes for AnexTEK's moboDA 3360, but not for Tatung's "elio" PMP a very stylish PMP that is also DivX and Mpeg4 compatible
Back to Globalsat's booth where the SD-502 was on display today, it now sports a black casing instead of the grey casing seen at CeBIT
Haicom was showing SiRFstarIII versions of the HI405, HI303 and HI305N the last two being the first SS3 CF GPS receivers to hit the market. They also had various colorful casings for the HI405 BT GPS!
Leadtek have redesigned the 9553 and replaced its weak 300mAh battery providing less than 3 hours of autonomy with a 650mAh battery in the 9553 L. They are also fine tuning the look of the 9700 "All in One" with the antenna now being hidden
San Jose Navigation have a new version of the G19B with an improved GSM module and 20+ hours of battery life (based on 2 SMS messages per hour)
Time to say bye bye for now ;-)
DAY THREE - 06/02
Visited Globalsat (offices and factory) today - full report will be up in June and will show the " birth" of a BT-338!

DAY FOUR - 06/03
Visiting Maction, the creators of MapKing and PaPaGO, the most popular GPS Navigation programs in Asia.
Collection of Maps, of PDAs and with Andy Tsai, Product Manager
Visiting Guidetek, a new and more consumer oriented brand launched by Holux earlier this year.
One can see the GR230/Gtek230, Holux231/Gtek232 and the new GPSlim236/Gtek238 (SiRFstarIII)
SiRFstarIII testing (Globalsat BT-338 and Globalsat BR-355) on the way to Computex
Last day at Computex 2005
The Mio 269 will be launched in the USA with DestinatorPN - it will be at Fry's in July
eBonTek was showing a new Bluetooth GPS based on the NemeriX chispet
PMP, SD/MMC Jukebox and full car system (GPS, Video, MP3, Camera) on display at the PDC booth, the storage card specialists
The 2005 Computex 2005 was a good opportunity to discover new technologies such as this amazing flat and transparent TV screen - somwhat less exciting intellingent teller machines - Smartphone optimized Video broadcasting system
Ending with a Computex 2005 surprise, the Novogo "all-in-one" based on the "blue" version of NAVIGON and that will be the first "all-in-one" to offer Traffic Inforation over RDS
The 2005 Computex is over, next show should be CES 2006 in Las Vegas !

How do you tell the difference between Haicom 305N that uses SS3 and Numerix chipsets? Do they have different part numbers?

Asus A636 - Does it have both an SD slot and a CF slot? I'm not a big fan of built-in Antennas. Can it be removed? Can I still use OCN or IG2 if I choose, over the software they will supply?

Well it really is at an early stage so things might still change, but I believe it is SD only. Shouldn't be a problem to use any type of software but no removal of the antenna, no ;-)
305N is NemeriX, 305III is SS3 and 305X is X2 ;-)

Have you talked to Globasat about starting a program to return the BT-338's to the factory/dealer to re-program with the latest firmware revisions? Is there going to be a new variation of the BT-338 that will allow (or eliminate) the auto-off feature?

Yes, actually Globalsat were kind enough to invite me for a tour of their offices and factory today and I brought up the subject of firmware upgrades. As you can see from the conclusion here http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=143&page=11 this is a subject I am keen on seeing progress being made on, but I believe it will require the involvement of SiRF as well, especially in the case of a bug fix. Anyway I did my best to point out that end users had expectations in this field and I believe the message went through ;-)

Sorry, what do you mean exactly ? I didn't get to see the firmware revision, but that's what they told me yes, the Haicom 305N has version 3 for sure and I've tried it.
