Hi, Marvin

You were right. I've changed zoom level values as you suggested and I can see more street names now.
I set highest zoom level to 100 meters which is perfectly fine for a large laptop screen. I wish iGuidance had map detail level settings option. Have a Happy New Year.

Do you find it helpful? Are you going to keep using it? Does it have some negative "side effects"?

If you are done fine-tuning it, and if you think it has practical value, why don't you share with us the FZL and MZL settings?

See more street names

It is quite helpful. I need to test it for a couple of days to see if there is any side effects. So far so good. Here is my FZL, MZL settings:

; feet zoom levels
FZL=300 750 1500 2250 3000 4500 6000 15000 30000 75000 150000
; meter zoom levels
MZL=100 250 500 750 1000 1500 2000 5000 10000 25000 50000

I also made new bigger zoom buttons.

I've spent about 15 minutes comparing your MZL settings to the original iGuidance settings. I have mixed feelings about it. On the first few zoom levels the map now looks too crowded with street names. But I guess it all depends on the street name font size chosen and screen size. Still I think likely there isn't much we can improve here on the original design. But it is something we can experiment with.

Sorry to disagree with you Marvin. It is important, at least to me, to see upcoming cross streets at the zoom level that I use the most. I used Garmin's Mapsource for several years and find that iGuidance, with my MZL/FZL settings, displays maps with similar details per given zoom level. I like Iguidance for it's user friendly interface and ability to use it with a touchscreen, which I'm intending to buy soon. Also routing is very fast and I love detour feature a lot. However I think some improvements of readability of the maps are needed. Specifically number of zoom levels would have to be increased to at least 20. Also map detail level shoud be user selectable, to certain point ofcourse, because of wide variety of screen sizes used in todays laptops and PDAs. Hope this makes sense to you.

Yes, if we knew how to increase the number of zoom levels then I would likely experiment with the above as well. But for my personal use I do not want to abandon the first one (or two) zoom levels over this. I often use them when I'm approaching a turn or when I'm approaching my destination.

But indeed this may be something other users may wish to try in their setups, and if you have found it useful I'm sure many others will as well.

I took the liberty to add the red title to your posting and I have also added it to the index on page one. Thanks very much for sharing it with us Greg!

I have iGuidance 2.1NA. Overall, I really like it compared to MS S&T.
There is just one major issue before I'd adopt it for my everyday
driving guide. The voice prompt often only tells
how much distance before making a turn. Quite often I hear it
tells me to turn in xxx yards, and I end up turning too soon. Or it
tells me to take a highway onramp toward nowhere, and I end up going
south instead of north. It must be a simple customization to make it name all the streets and highway directions, as I can I can see on the route list the name of the street. Has this been fixed in the latest release or anyone has a hack for this?

thanks

In my humble opinion nothing in that area requires fixing. It is just perfect as it is.

After a while you will get better at judging distance. Adding street names to voice prompts would 1.) make voice prompts much longer; 2.) Text-to-speech technology would be required and we would have to say bye bye to the very attractive voice and say hello to a robotic sounding computer generated sound; 3.) You would have to keep an eye on street signs and try to read the street names which may be difficult at night, rain, snow, fog, etc. Of course unless you are familiar with the street names, but then you likely don't need navigation so much in areas you know so well.

<jk> A rumor has it that one of the programmers who works on the development of iGuidance is passionate about anything related to astronomy. Apparently there is a new version being tested now which, instead of the plain blue background, will display moon and star constellations based on your GPS location, time, date, and direction of travel. During the day you will see the sun, if the sun happens to be in the direction where you are currently heading. Another feature would include displaying of clouds, but this will require live internet connection to download current data. </jk>

Okay, all kidding aside, I too wish we could use bitmap images for sky background. It could add another element of reality to iGuidance. But I'm afraid there may not be a way to achieve that at this moment. At least I don't know how.

Hmm, no reply in a couple of days likely means no many people experimented with that :-(

I opened iguidance.exe in a hex editor this morning to play around with it a bit. I do see some references to Tahoma and TahomaBd fonts. I uninstalled Tahoma from my PC and when I then started iGuidance I see that the current street and next turn street name font has been substituted for a different font.

So perhaps one way to start exploring this would be by taking Tahoma font and by using some font editor software doing some changes to it (or renaming some other font, for example Arial Black, or some other bold font) to Tahoma. But this would affect other applications which use this font, too.

Actually I should have thought of this earlier, on page 6 of this thread you will find ideas on how to make the trip status box bigger (to see ETA, speed, etc.). Use the same application to achieve larger "Next Street" display. The best one of the several discussed on the page is in my humble opinion iGZoom by David Burban (a.k.a. 0l33l).
