| That's excellent source of info! I often wonder why Navteq doesn't make this info available on its own site. |

| Yes, too bad, NA is not as updated as the rest of the world, a problem on their site ? I wonder if maybe the actual NT releases are not lagging. Garmin v9 is 2006/Q2 in Europe, but could be 2006/Q1 in the US. |

| That's an interesting observation. I didn't even notice that before you mentioned it. At first I only checked a few of the .pdf files for some of European countries, not paying much attention to anything more local to me :-) |

My first GPS is en-route, a Garmin Nuvi 670 from Amazon.
How old are the maps which come with GPS devices, a couple of quarters old?
I don't suppose NavTeq will provide free updates to the latest, will they?
I checked a couple of PDFs, the Q406 and Q407 for France. The number of POIs went from like 370k to over 400k. Sounds like a significant change.
Are the maps specifically locked/formatted to different GPS models? IOW, would I go to Garmin to update maps or would I go to NavTeq or some third-parties?
Do they charge an "update" price or do they charge you as if you're buying the whole thing again? |

1. Yeah, I'd say maps may be from a couple of versions (quarters) old up to about 4 versions (quarters) old. It may depend on at which stage of the development of a new software version the product developer acquires the new data. If they acquire the map data at the beginning of working on a new software version then you can expect one year lag right there.
2. Navteq does sell updates for some products. Check Navteq website.
3. Garmin sells updates for its own products
4. Pricing structures vary between manufacturers. But an update is almost never free (unless you purchase a product just before an update). |

NAVTEQ Releases First Turkey MapCHICAGO, June 11 -- NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has announced its first release of digital map coverage in Turkey. The NAVTEQ(R) map of Turkey covers a population of more than 13 million and includes over 1,000 administrative places such as cities. The initial release contains over 28,000 kilometers of navigable roads for the cities of Istanbul and Ankara. The major highways, secondary roads, and arterial streets in these cities have been verified against 615+ validation rules and conform to NAVTEQ's standard global data specification. This attention to detail provides customers with a high quality dataset and allows them to use the data immediately with other NAVTEQ maps. Additionally, the NAVTEQ map of Turkey contains connector roads throughout the country, connecting the country's largest cities to each other and linking Turkey to Bulgaria and Greece.
"The addition of the Turkey map provides a seamless link between Europe and the Middle East where we have extensive coverage," stated Mary Hardwick, Vice President of Product Management Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Because NAVTEQ provides maps in standard formats using a single data specification, customers will be able to easily integrate the Turkey map into their regional solutions providing users of navigation, wireless location-based, and fleet optimization systems a continuous corridor of coverage from Oman to Portugal and Norway."
"Geographic analysts, deployed from Europe working along side local residents, assured that the map was built to the NAVTEQ global specification that incorporated local nuances," reported Christian Heyne, NAVTEQ Country Manager. "With our NAVTEQ team applying the NAVTEQ specification, our customers have the confidence that the map of Turkey will work in the same environment as any other NAVTEQ map they are currently using."
NAVTEQ has the largest single database specification coverage in the Middle East including, along with Turkey, maps for the following countries and territories: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and U.A.E. |

Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia now have 100% coverageChicago, IL– June 19, 2007 – NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has announced availability of full coverage maps for Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia, providing a road network map from the Baltic Sea in the North, southwest to the Adriatic Sea. These countries represent some of the fastest growing economies in the region with a combined population of over 67 million. With full coverage maps for these five countries, drivers will have access to over one million kilometers of road network.
Thirty-seven city areas are covered at NAVTEQ’s highest coverage level called Detailed Coverage. A cornerstone to NAVTEQ’s accuracy, this means that all the roads in the area are included in the data set and that all the attributes associated with the road have been verified by geographic analysts. The Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia datasets contain all navigable roads.
“Our research indicates strong consumer interest in navigation systems for these countries, with the majority of those responding expressing interest in a multi-country map that could be used for holiday travel,” stated Mary Hardwick, Vice President of Product Management for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Concentrating our build plans in areas that provide the highest opportunity for economic growth also enables our customers to commit resources to applications with direct consumer benefit outside of navigation such as fleet management systems that can improve customer service.”
NAVTEQ has broad coverage in Central and Eastern Europe with road network maps for Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. |

Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland CHICAGO, July 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NAVTEQ , a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, has announced the release of four new countries in southern Africa: Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland. With the addition of these countries, NAVTEQ's coverage in the southern Africa region has increased to over 450,000 km of road network. The NAVTEQ(R) Map now includes 166 cities with areas of Detailed Coverage, NAVTEQ's highest specification, meaning that its full set of over 200 road attributes have been applied and verified.
The number of foreign tourists to the area has doubled over a ten year period with many of them arriving in South Africa as their point of origin into the region. NAVTEQ's latest coverage provides connector roads from these countries to South Africa's full coverage map.
Mary Hardwick, NAVTEQ Vice President of Product Management for Europe, Middle East and Africa, sees the additional NAVTEQ coverage as an asset to this growing industry. "Our customers have asked us to provide coverage from the major cities in the region to the major tourist attractions such as game parks. Because these new countries are built using our global database specification, customers will be able to more easily develop regional navigation applications."
"The inclusion of over 29,000 Points of Interest, including petrol stations is particularly valuable in rural areas," stated Alastair Protheroe NAVTEQ, Director of Product Marketing for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Knowing in advance the location of petrol stations along your route, enables pre-planning and eliminates some of the apprehension of traveling into remote, unfamiliar areas."
NAVTEQ provided the first automotive-grade navigable map of South Africa in 2002. The company expanded the map to full coverage in 2006. |

| Likely no product has the new map data as of the time of this writing. The press release date was June 19th, so perhaps a few months from now you may start looking for products which include Q2-2007 Nevteq maps. |

Audrius, keep an eye on the index on page # 1 of this thread - as soon as I see a press release I post it, and the page 1 index always gets updated at the same time.
My guess is that it shouldn't take much longer for Navteq to have 100% coverage for Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. I think most of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia already has full coverage. |

Navigon is shipping Q2 2007 maps of easter europe. Just got 7110 with a free upgrade coupon. Strange thing is that Navigon Support has no info about that map. Or just want to say. 'Official' info still:
Below you will find the coverty which we offer for MN6: Poland: 21% (648,197km) Coverty Slovakia: 13% (10,990km) Coverty Slovenia: 19% (3,076km) Coverty Hungary: 30% (117,407km) Coverty Czech Republic: 20,9% (163,875km) Coverty
BTW: Don't you think N's support is strange? No official forum or blog :( Got one big Navigon forum but it is in German only :(
P.S. Nice comparison are provided by Cz portal: http://navigovat.mobilmania.cz/clanky/Ar.asp?ARI=113466&CHID=2&EXPS=&EXPA= |
