| When will Navteq start their work in China. That'll be huge job. Not to mention the constant road changes due to the speed of construction. there. For that reason, I really would love to have a GPS solution when I travel there for business. We need to have some coverage of the major cities first. |

About a year and a half ago (October 15, 2004) NavTeq and a Chinese company NavInfo announced joint venture, but I don't recall reading anything about it since. The lack of more info is actually not surprising because if I recall correctly I read once that China didn't allow maps being exported. If that is still the case the maps made by the joint venture in China would stay in China and NavTeq would not be making its usual announcements about navigable maps of just another part of the world being available to its direct customers...
Here is the old press release: http://www.navteq-connections.com/news/news-archive.jsp?news_id=687

Ok, I missed that. Sounds like that Garmin is doing another one of those Chinese language map set that needs localized hardwares to work, similar to what they did with MapSource City Navigator Taiwan... So annoying, means that anyone with a non-Chinese localized Garmin unit would not be able to use it.
I am not aware of any export restrictions for maps. I can get all kinds of maps of China here. |

If that is what Garmin is doing, then I wonder if it also has something to do with the map export restrictions.
I did I quick Google search and now I know where I read about the export issue. The article was actually in relation with TeleAtlas. It was published at www.pocketgpsworld.com last year. It reads: "China is interesting as it is illegal to export the maps. This means that a data processing centre has had to be constructed in China, and any maps that are produced must stay within the country. Therefore if you take your SatNav to China then you must return the map data prior to leaving the country." It is a very interesting interview, read it at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/teleatlas-visit-aug05.php

| Funny law. I doubt if it's enforceable. In any case, the country is so big has such a maze network of roads in the city/countryside. I think Garmin is wise to partner with a local map maker. But I sure wish they would wise up and release a pinyin version that's compatible with non-Chinese units. Fingers crossed. |

Hi, first post. I'm in the market for an AIO GPS device
Just came across the Spain coverage news. I understand the Garmin nüvi uses Navteq maps. If I want to benefit benefit from the detailed navteq Spain data, can I buy a nüvi 350 and update the Spain maps or must I get the 360?
Thanks! |

MajorGrubert, the user manual of your nüvi 350 describes the process of installing new maps. Check the Index --> "Purchasing Additional MapSource Maps" section.
However, as with any other similar product, it may take even a year from the day NavTeq announces new map data availability (to its direct customers) till the data actually becomes available to consumers.

This quote came off the Garmin web site. It would appear that you might need software that's specially tailored to the particular product. "Our City Navigator NT DVDs include the same detailed maps and coverage areas found on Garmin's City Navigator North America and City Navigator Europe DVDs. The only difference is the compression technique we use to create these DVDs.
City Navigator NT data is identical to the content on existing City Navigator products, so you can still literally travel to a new city, look up your hotel, restaurants, and other services and use your compatible Garmin GPS to guide you there without stopping for directions. City Navigator NT includes the same fully routable detailed maps.
NT software is not sold separately. Since data is compressed differently than our other products, it can only be used with compatible Garmin products."

OK, the following is from FOOL.com , but it has been written by Ryan Fuhrmann, CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), so it may be worth reading ;-)
"Navigation systems for automobiles constitute NAVTEQ's current bread and butter, providing 70% of 2005 revenue. The company estimates that 10 million vehicles have been equipped with navigation systems employing its technology. It also stated that 18 billion online navigation requests used its database in 2005..."
"NAVTEQ is the undisputed market leader in providing digital map information. As far as I have found, there is no true competitor; European-based Tele Atlas comes in a distant second..."
