Hey guys, I was playing on the Net during a boring rainy day in the mountains and on the BMW german site I've found the firmware update for the BMW NAvigatorII formerly Garmin 26x0 (I do not know the 'x') and:
Firmware available is 4.30.
I immediately downloaded it and read the readme. (see below) I'm pretty sure this is what all of us are waiting for from Garmin sice months. Shall I update my unit (2610) or do I risk something ?
Please note problem (1) I think I've already seen it on this forum.
here below part of the readme.txt
WARNINGS: If this software is uploaded to a unit other than the product for which it is designed, you will not be able to operate that unit. If multiple attempts to update the software fail, you may need to return the unit to BMW for service. Reverting to previous software revisions will clear all user data.
Changes from 4.20 to 4.30: Problems Corrected: 1) Changing a saved route's name could cause a reboot. 2) Find Exit feature did not show the complete list of services for a given exit. 3) In some rare situations, extra text was shown after the end of textual turn instructions. 4) Searching for an intersection of two identically named streets always returned "None Found". 5) Corrected Italian translation of "Public Sport Airport". 6) Odometer value displayed an incorrect value when configured to small narrow tabs if the odometer value exceeded 999. 7) The small address overlay tab didn't wrap to two lines. 8) Corrected identification of Navigator II in MapSource.
Changes from 3.90 to 4.20: Problems Corrected: 1) Improved synchronization of spoken and displayed turn distance. 2) Corrected shutdown problem that occurred when saved route names contained the ß (ss) character. 3) The "Allow U-Turns" setting sometimes resulted in unnecessary u-turns. 4) Improved Dutch translation of the word "Minor". 5) Seasonally closed roads are now used if the road is open during the date that the route is created. Previously, all seasonal roads were avoided.
Changes from 3.80 to 3.90: 1) Corrected routing within the central London toll area when using European City Navigator v6 cartography. |

Sounds good.
No update has been posted for actuall 26xx series, still 3.9. I realize the BMW NAV is more or less the same thing but Garmin even lists seperate firmware for the 2610 and 20, even though its the same thing.
I would wait. |

Here you are, goto: http://www.bmw-motorrad.de and look for "Navigationssysteme" in the "Produkte", then "downloads" and then "software". In this page, german "Firmware" is "Basissoftware" take NavigatorII's, as NavigatorI is the SPIII colormap.
I know BMW version of the SP26x0 has in addition a Compass window and nothing more.
To be truth I'm not sure I can wait I'll try to. Fra |

| One more info... the BMW unit is provided with a 512 MB Flash, so it should not have the minidrive. |

Here is a page that lists the differences between the 26X0 and NavigatorII.
http://www.adventure-motorcycling.co.uk/news/?id=40
What I find interesting is with the navigatorII firmware loaded into my 2610 I see none of these changes. I can't find the compass page or any color differences. This leads me to believe that there are several branches of code in the firmware image. The flashing program must recognize the version of hardware and flash with the appropriate code. |

Great! Congratulations. I'll do mine this evening.
Now the question is why Garmin does not issue the firmware for everyone as it is dated Feb, 16th 2005? |

If you d/l the Motorrad 4.3 s/w to a SP2610, i.e. not a Navigator II, what version does the 2610 show?
I'm just wondering about that "branch thing...
Maybe it does not really load 4.3.

I have a 630 mile trip planned and will probably be a coward until I return, not loading the slightly renegade version of 4.3. I am still puzzeled by Garmin not releasing it across the board. I understand the pressure to get it out as the 4.1/4.2 bugs were nasty blackeye for Garmin and BMW both. Garmin normally has pretty solid releases with glacial small changes and bug fixes. -----------------------------------------------
Changes from 4.20 to 4.30:
Problems Corrected:
1) Changing a saved route's name could cause a reboot.
------------------------------------------------------------
Changes from 3.90 to 4.20:
Problems Corrected:
1) Improved synchronization of spoken and displayed turn distance.

There has been some talk that newer versions of the 2610 do not work with the BMW Motorcycles mount:

I'm thinking that, in addition to the 4.20 changes listed above, that 4.20 also disables the 2610 from working with the BMW mount. Would help explain away some of the sneaky details behind the non-release of 4.20. |
