Posted 02/10 Over the past few days, information has been circulating about the first PDAPhone with a built-in GPS that joins the ranks of PDAs sporting a GPS such as the Mio168 or Garmin iQue's. Other items of note include the first ever "square" screen on a PocketPC (240x240 pixels versus the usual 4/3 display in 320x240 or 640x480) likely to allow for the presence of a keyboard without unduly "stretching" the device.
In anticipation of its official launch at the 3GSM in Cannes next week (coverage in GpsPasSion Live !), here's a GpsPasSion exclusive, the first "user" pics of the hw6500.
First and obvious comment, the GPS antenna is internal, which could hurt performance given the RF interference of all the built-in electronics, but fortunately there's an antenna connector that could help in rough environments.
To be continued...

| Why would HP ship with Tom Tom when they own their own software? |

Any word on the chipset being used for the GPS hardware and its sensitivity? Also, I read that when the phone is unable to obtain a GPS fix via the satellites, it will triangulate its position using cell towers. How effective is this process? Can a program like Tom Tom run off a triangulated position as opposed to a location obtained through GPS satellites?
Any info would be much appreciated. |

No technical details yet, I suspect it uses some form of "soft GPS" with only an RF chip (see the 3GSM report for pitures of the different versions of the SiRF chips) and with good conditions it can work ok. You certainly can't navigate with triangulation !

| If you can't navigate with "soft gps" then what is the point of incorporating the technology in the handheld? Aside from a navigation program, what other programs would take advantage of "soft gps"? |

No Soft gps is ok in good conditions (instead of having a standalone basebaseband you use the CPU power of the PDA), triangulation is different and is not. In any case, this is pure conjecture at this time, HP might have included a full GPS module inside.
What you read was specifically about the 6500 or about another phone ?

OK, let me try to clarify my question. On various websites, including the link below to Brighthand, it is mentioned that the HW6500 will include a gps module. In addition, when the device can't receive signals from the satellites, it will switch to triangulating its position with cellphone towers. My question was, can software such as Tom Tom work off this triangulated position? If not, then what is the point of including the ability to triangulate the position using cell phone towers? If gps navigation programs can't run off triangulated positions, what program can?

Well that remains to be seen about triangulation, it's a feature of the network anyway, not of the device, and no, you can't navigate with triangulation, but it can be useful to locate the closest service station or theater.
