Hi, gang.

We're interested in correcting incorrect expansions, such as saying "doctor" instead of "drive" for "DR." We're also interested in forming associations or logic based on the way the data is presented on the map. For example, when is "BR" a bridge, and when is it a business route?

You folks provide the wrong expansions, and we'll try to fix them.

BR = bridge
BR- = business route
CR- = country road <number>
CRES = crescent
CIR = circle
CT = court
de Anza Blvd ne Delaware Anza Blvd
DR [A-Za-z][A-Za-z][A-Za-z]" is "Doctor ...", else "Drive ..."
FDR Dr N ne f d r doctor north
PKWY, PKY = parkway
RT- = route <number>
ST = street, ne saint
ST [A-Za-z][A-Za-z][A-Za-z]" is "Saint ...", else "Street ..."
TER = terrace
TFWY = traffic way
TRCE = trace, ne terrace

In NJ, CR is County Route. Mr. Mapopolis says "Circle" instead.

Here is a route it happened on:

STONE BRIDGE LN to MAIN STREET FLANDERS
54 mins (43 Mi)
TURN LEFT onto STONEBRIDGE LN (EASTON, PA 18040)
Go 0.1 miles then RIGHT onto MECO RD W
Go 0.1 miles then LEFT onto RICHMOND RD
Go 3.0 miles then RIGHT onto FRONT ST
Go 1.7 miles then Continue RIGHT onto N DELAWARE DR/PA-611
Go 1.1 miles then LEFT onto N DELAWARE DR/PA-611
Go 4.5 miles then CONTINUE onto PA-611/DELAWARE DR
Go 5.2 miles then CONTINUE onto N DELAWARE DR/PA-611
Go 0.6 miles then Continue LEFT onto PA-611N/PORTLAND TOLL BRG
Go 0.5 miles then CONTINUE onto LEWIS ST/US-611-ALT
Go 0.2 miles then Continue RIGHT onto RAMP TO I-80E
Go 22.2 miles then EXIT RIGHT onto EXIT 27/TO SOMERVILLE
Go 0.4 miles then CONTINUE onto US-206
Here --->Go 2.8 miles then SLIGHT LEFT onto CR-613/MAIN STREET FLANDERS
TURN RIGHT to MAIN STREET FLANDERS (NJ)

Hi, pkaine,

That's a terrific example. Do we see something we might make a rule from?

CR-/%n = country road number

Now we need to find out if we can make a rule for circles. Anybody see one depicted on their maps?

Hi Lamar,

It seems to me that Circle is normally abbreviated as "cir", not "cr". If anything on a map that comes after the place name is abbreviated as "cr", it's probably "Creek" (but you hopefully wouldn't be routing me there :).

One mistake that can come up frequently in California (depending on the areas one frequents) is interpreting "de" (as in de Anza Blvd in Santa Clara County) as "Delaware".

Hi, Scott,

"de" is a good example. As for "circle," we need to find it on the maps in order to make a rule. We're thinking that we can tell "BR" from "bridge" by looking for the dash after it. "BR" by itself means "bridge." BR-number means business route. (But we're not sure... we need to find the examples on the maps.)

If all you need are names of streets with Circle in it, here are a few:

Vienna, Virginia (Fairfax County) Albrecht Cir SW
Vienna, Virginia (Fairfax County) Courthouse Cir SW
Vienna, Virginia (Fairfax County) Hillside Cir SW

It also struggles with PWY, for Parkway. It says something like "pwee," but it's hard to make it out exactly. Fairfax County, Va, Fairfax County PWY is an example.

Curiously, if you search under Find Intersection for "Fairfax Co" there are six different ways the street name is represented:

Fairfax County Parkway
Fairfax County Pkwy
Fairfax County Pky
Fairfax Co Pky
Fairfax Co Pwky North
Fairfax Co Pkwy

Hi, Jake,

So all your "circles" are abbreviated "CIR." That's consistent, then. I take it you mean PKWY, right?

I have a few,

This is in regards to NY State in the US.

I think I mentioned this in the PPC beta thread, RT-[number] is pronounced as 'R. T. [number]'. It should be pronounced as 'Route [number]'.

Example: Rockland County, N41.09.789 W74.01.998
Route anywhere through this point to see the effect.

Here's another, in Manhattan FDR Dr N is pronounced as 'F.D.R. Doctor North'. It should say drive instead.

Example: New York, N40.45.001 W73.57.972
Route anywhere through this point to see the effect.
Also, some service roads read 'Service road to FDR Doctor...'

North St. Ext. is pronounced as North Saint Ext (sounds like x'd), s/b North Street Extension.

State of Connecticut on major road signs where CT is used as the abbreviation is pronounced Court, example, Take Exit 1A To Hartford CT sounds like Take Exit 1A to Hartford Court.

Hi, Gary,

Thanks. I got it.

Lamar

But, uh, where does CT appear in a map meaning "court?"

Fairfax Virginia - Heatherford CT is a court

You can find lots of them by Find/Address and put CT under Street.

"then prepare to go about..." sounds like "then three-pair to go about..." through my multimedia mount and/or cassette adapter. Could just be my ears.
