Hi Ris, Lamar
Not related to the current topics on this thread but I thought I would say the detour now option worked perfectly today and I wanted to say thank you
Travelling a route I use quite often about half way through I find roadworks and three lanes get squeezed into one this made my twenty minute journey take over an hour
I was not running Mapopolis on the way there (its a straight road) but not knowing any of the side roads I did not fancy my chances. So on the way back I used Mapopolis and when I hit the main road I checked my total distance to home on the ETA pane (seven miles) then pressed Detour now and picked 5 miles.
Ten minutes later after a nice scenic journey I ended back on the main road well past the road works and made it back home in time.
Well done guys, this is the first time I have used Detour now in anger and I wanted to let everyone know it works a treat

There is one slight oversight with Detour Now functionality. If you request a detour range that fails to produce a detour route, the user is left uninformed of the failure.
Perhaps this condition is intuitively obvious (and perhaps that's good enough), but it might be nice to inform the user in some way. "No detour available within selected range"
As a WISHLIST item I would like to see the failed attempt result in a dialog box which offers to try the next avialable increment by tapping "YES". Or tap "AUTO" for the first available detour using appropriate increments programmatically. Appropriate increments for this AUTO function might be 0.1 mile increments to 1 mile (total), then 1 mile increments to 5 miles, then 5 mile increments to 25 miles...or something along those lines depending upon the users initial input range. Such an AUTO range function should keep the user informed such as: "First available detour requires 5 mile range. Accept detour? YES/NO"

Maybe there is another way to do this that I am missing??
Thanks!
Hi Afeudale, I'm sorry I misunderstood your post the first time around, and I see now what you are talking about. The radius options in the city list are indeed limited to 40km and current view area, or by city name or zip code. On the Pocket PC there is an additional window for searching landmarks called Find > All Places by Type, which DOES offer about 10 radius options between 1km and 40km, but the design of that window requires a touch screen, so it is not available on Smartphones unfortunately. It's on the wish list to add more radius options to the city list and/or find a way to port the All Places By Type window to smartphone, making it use keypad input instead of touch screen input. Thanks for pointing this out.
Best Regards, Ris

BINGO! That's exactly what we need in several instances as soon as we get back to adding features. A total UI facelift aside, we would get significant mileage out of multiple implementations of 'All Places by Type' screen code. Detour Now range selection comes to mind. As does the current hardware button options available -- tap one button for this custom menu which offers up to 12 user-assigned functions. Favorites is another candidate for such a [touch/keypad] menu. 'Route to Favorite' locations, etc. Wow, the more I think of it, the whole interface could be leveraged on such full-screen [finger-friendly] menus. Now we're getting somewhere!!!!

Hey nice one Dcrochet, I must admit I had to stop and think for a while to make sure I has set the detour far enough ahead.
quote: using appropriate increments
I think that with an Auto option we should be able to reduce the detour range as well. In my example if the detour range had gone much further it would consider my home as being within the bounds of the detour. So if we get an automatic option then count down and up and then present the best choices.
Alternatively for future releases how about using TMC or other traffic systems as well

Hey guys, it's good to see all this discussion of future features. It must mean that pre6 is bug-free.
quote: As a WISHLIST item I would like to see the failed attempt result in a dialog box which offers to try the next avialable increment by tapping "YES". Or tap "AUTO" for the first available detour using appropriate increments programmatically...
It's been a while since I looked at the detour function, but I'm pretty sure that it already does this AUTO suggestion every time you ask for a detour. It has a limit on the amount that it will auto-increase the detour distance, so it gives up at double the user-selected distance or something like that.

4.58 * Fixes combo box sizes on Find Address screen Does this fix also apply to "Find Business" screeen? it seems the drop-down box still overlaps w/ keyboard area. I'm on 4.6 pre 6 now.

Hi Ris,
Thanks for the reply.
I am still a bit confused as to why a touch screen is needed (i.e. Pocket PC version) to have smaller radii than 40km for Landmark searches? For me, 40km makes the function useless, as I never would want to search for a landmark within 40km (there would be *lots*), but rather a closer radius such as 1km or 2km.
Also, I'm not sure if the input case selection (i.e. T9, abc...) has been fixed, but mine still reverts to the last known case (often T9), rather than "abc", which would be much more useful in input boxes.
Thanks. |

Actually Ris was simply saying that they initially skipped that screen on the Smartphone because it would require mapping the icons to the phone keypad, which they haven't gotten around to. And since the code for that implementation is largely in place, complete with multiple POI range options, it's probably the preferred route for addind ranges to the Smartphone, just like you've outlined.

Hi dcrochet/Ris,
I think there may be some confusion here...
The option (on Smartphone) I am referring to is:
1) Open Mapopolis 2) Choose "Find Route" 3) Choose "Current GPS" for starting location 4) Choose "Select Landmark" for destination location
In the first drop down box you can only select:
a) Anywhere b) Within 40km ** c) Current view area d) Specific regions (of which, most times you do not know which region you are in...)
I am suggesting there should be an expansion on (b) above to other ranges such as 1km, 2km, 5km, 10km, 20km. For example, if I am searching for the nearest McDonalds restaurant, I would want one within a few km. Within 40km, there are probably 200 or more. You can semi-accomplish this by zooming the current view area to a swath of 1km or 2km and then selecting "Current view area" but this is tedious.
I am not sure where the mapping of icons to phone buttons comes into play here? Maybe I'm missing something? Maybe there is another way to do this?
Thanks! |

Hi afeudale, I know exactly where you mean, thanks.
On the Pocket PC, there is another way to find landmarks: Tools > Find > All Places By Type. This brings up a screen with 12 icons, each representing a different category of landmark. This screen DOES already offer many search radius options between 1 and 40km, with category-based searching for landmarks, but it will not work on Smartphone because it is currently designed to use a touch screen. As one solution to your request for smaller radius searching, we plan to eventually port this pocket-pc-only screen to Smartphone in the not-too-distant future.
Under Tools > Find > Place or Business (which is identical to Tools > Find Route > Select Landmark) the 40km and Current View Area options are programmed in a non-elegant way that makes it far more difficult to add more radius options than it seems like it should be from a user perspective, so that is why we are hesitant to change it while we're trying to stabalize a build for a general release. After a general release, we will be free to create bugs by adding features like more radius options in this list.
Best Regards, Ris

Hi Ris,
I have captured the output of the GPS just as it loses the satellite signal. For privacy reasons, I have changed the long and lat. Hope that won't mess up your debugging.
Thanks, Mike

I have problem with the "Route Through" option.
Created a route and saved it. Load it to the map and searches for route point, finds it and taps the box to get the "Route Trough" option, which is dimmed.
I can not make an alternative route.
Do I make something wrong or a bug?
Did a search and got a hit on 4.6 pre4 from 28 August, but could not load the hit to read the answer.
