Could anybody here recommend a car tracker in kit form that works?
I already spent money on one piece of junk.

Welcome to GpsPasSion!
There are a few options out there. Depends on how you're planning to use it I guess.

anything new on this front? Looking for simplicity in the overall design. Something that can be monitored online and has no to low monthly fees. I'm amazed at how crowded this market sector is getting.

The ROAD ACE 2 -- Dell X50 Haicom 303S GPS, 2 GB SD, Arkon powered cradle, Mapopolis.

Try this free service that works with Nextel phone:
http://www.freegps.info

I have not seen anything better! Shows location, speed, and the heading of the mobile phone. No monthly service fee, but you need to have Nextel phone with Total Connect data service. Nextel has some nice small phones that work with this free service. By the way you can get a phone for free too! Let me know what you think!

Regards,
Dmitriy
